• White Castle was the first modern fast food chain in America (1921).
• Drive In’s preceded Drive Thru’s.• McDonald’s is in 119 of the 196 countries in the world.
There are more McDonald’s restaurants than any other chain.
• In 1970, Americans spent 6 billion on fast food. Today we spend 150 billion. That is 50% of their annual food budget!
• The average American eats fast food 5 times per week.• Fast food saves people time!
More History!• When drive thru’s became
increasingly popular in the 1990’s, automobile makers started installing cup holders in the consoles. As the serving sizes became bigger so did the cupholders.

What to look for on a menu
• Sodium Content• Less than 480 milligrams for an item to be considered
“healthy”. • Adults should consume less than 2300 milligrams per day.• Too much sodium intake can cause osteoporosis, high
blood pressure, stroke, and kidney disease.
• Fat Content• Daily consumption should be no more than 30% of
daily calories.• For a 2000 calorie diet that would be around 66
grams of fat per day.

• What are the benefits of fat?– Cushion and protect our organs– Give us energy– Vitamin absorption
• What foods have healthy fats?– Nuts– Fish– Olive Oil
• Sugar• World Health Organization recently dropped it’s recommended
daily allowance to 25 grams per day = 6 teaspoons for women. 9 teaspoons for men. It use to be 50 grams!• 1 12oz can of soda has 39 grams of sugar! This sugar is
nothing but “empty calories”.• A 32oz soda has as much sugar as 11 Krispy Kreme donuts!• Too much sugar in the diet can lead to tooth decay, diabetes
and weight gain. • Would it surprise you that McDonald’s supposedly healthy
