    editors note

here is nothing like a little

Olympic spirit to thrive off and

be inspired by. These 2012Summer Olympics in Londonseem to have brought a rejuve-nated spirit of patriotism as wecheer for our athletes as they

represent our country and bring homeseveral medals, including an impressiveamount of gold. These Olympic athleteshave worked hard for their whole lives, fo-cused and determined to bring home thetitle of the best in the world.

The mentality of San Diegos trendsetters

isnt too far from the ways of our Olympi-ans by way of the goals, dedication anddetermination our SD trendsetters areblazing in the trails in fashion, art, beauty,

music and so much more. Learn about and be motivated by those that are changingour communities and thriving in their own expertise on page 12.

Now is a great time to challenge yourself to accomplish great things just like our fea-tured San Diego trendsetters. With the mindset of determination, you can set biggoals and follow-through to make them happen. One goal I set this year is to createsomething special myself, which is my new gluten-free, healthy and active lifestylebrand, Sweet & Free Life.

Im so excited to share this new brand with all of you as this stems from my per-

sonal story in my fight for good health my entire life. I had lived in so much painand was really sick until I was twenty-four years old, when I found the culprit, gluten. This discovery, four years ago, has taught me so much about living a healthy and ac-tive life while being gluten-free which I have decided to share on my new website,www.SweetandFreeLife.com. So many people with celiac disease or gluten intoleranceare living life undiagnosed, and I hope to help many find their way back to a Sweet &Free Life! Of course thats not all that you will find, so check it out and get a taste of me!

As summer is wrapping up and several of you are headed back to school, or yourregular responsibilities and saying goodbye to vacation time, I hope you all are full ofamazing memories that will last forever. At least the sun will continue to be shining inbeautiful San Diego, so continue to soak it up as much as you can!

San Diegos very own Hyena was created in 2010

What type of music do you play and what type of people typicallygo to your shows?

Cooper:Well, what theyre calling it these days is indie/electro. Half live, half drum

    figure it out from scratch.

but still had bands like Joy Division, Depeche

Duran Duran and The Police molding our y

days. So with those influences we started work

gether with that energy in mind.

What are some big things coming up for

    Hyena in 2012?

When did you decide that Hyena was going

The San Diego fashion industry is a growfire full of ideas and fresh talent. There armany aspects to keeping this industry higand successful. A big part of it is the mod

This effort is prepping them to beall over the world to represent many top

Cytori Therapeutics has broughtthe biggest new trend incosmetic and reconstructive

surgery to the table. Instead ofusing silicone breast implants, the companyhas created a way to reconstruct and enlargewomens breasts by taking belly fat, insert-ing stem cells into the fat and transplantingit into the womans breast for natural, totallyreal-looking breast implants.

In todays world, where anyone can changemost every part of his or her body, thismethod is a newly safer way to undergo sucha procedure. The procedure is less invasiveand safer than traditional silicone implants.

The concept of removing fat from one part

of the body and injecting it in another part isnot new, that process is called fat transfer. However, what is new with this procedureis the addition of the stem cells to the fat tomake sure that the fat cells stay alive, so thenthey are more likely to become a naturalpart of the body without dissipating to otherparts of the body. Also, with a natural ap-pearance and feel to the breasts, this seemsto be a strong candidate for a near-totalreplacement of the currently hot siliconebreast enhancement option.

Not only does this surgical procedure help

individuals who want bigger breasts, italso is being hailed as a method to helppost-mastectomy patients regenerate theirnatural, pre-surgical breast. The procedurecosts around $5,000 to $8,000, however isonly practiced in a few places such as Japanand Europe. It is unknown if this procedurewill be widely available in the United Statesanytime soon. At the time of this pressdate, Cytori Therapeutics was unavailablefor comment.

BONUS TIP: Understand that British men wont get over emotional, they may however cry over a football match.

    BY HAYLEY UNDERWOOD

Its that time again. Its the time that mostof us mere mortals are left to gaze in won-derment upon the worlds top athletic gods

as they compete with strength and deter-mination for the Olympic gold. Rather thanracing around Olympic Park, we sit, glued

to the TV, regretting the day we quit gym-nastics at age seven. Whether you agree totheir location or not, this year the Olympics

are being held in London. This saddens medearly. Not because I question their stateof security, mind you, as I know all too wellabout their security measures regardingvisa and immigration control (theyre rather

strict), but because its a constant reminderof my own feat of strength and determina-tion: dating a Brit.

Dont get me wrong, Jonathan is a lovely, intelligent and handsome man, but datinghim took more mental, emotional and phys-ical training than dare I say most Olympians

will experience in their entire careers. Then

again, I hadnt dedicated my life to becom-ing an Anglo-dating champion, despite ev-

    ery romantic comedys best efforts.

From the moment I met Jonathan, it was ap-parent that he was more Mark Darcy than

Daniel Cleaver. This, in theory, wouldvebeen great. After all, Mr. Darcy was themale protagonist in the movie BridgetJoness Diary, but lest we forget, on the sur-

face, masking his understatedly sweet un-derbelly, was a cold shell of a man who wasdevoid of any emotional expression. Sure,

Ms. Jones was able to accept this, especial-ly after the Hugh Grant character ruined herlike an East London borough after the riots, but for me it was more difficult than trying

to beat Michael Phelps in a freestyle relay.

We met on New Years Eve at a mutualfriends party in Camden. There were only

a handful of singles present and as is customary, each member of the various couples attemptedto work their matchmaking magic. My particu-

lar Brit wasnt meant to be my match. In fact,I had been warned against him. To my Britishfriends he was arrogant and difficult to date.Male friends felt he was a braggart about his

Cambridge education. Female friends thoughthe was a lothario. One girl mentioned that theyhad been on two dates, which she paid for, and

after the second date, they didnt speak again.I heeded their warnings, but from our first in-troduction forward I knew there was no turningback.

Sure, he was everything his peers had men-tioned, but whether it was the alcohol or theaccent, the more we talked, the more difficult it

was for me to register why any of that mattered. We spoke of rugby (he was the captain at hisuniversity), music (he wrote music and played ina band), literature (we shared a love of both the

British classics as well modern American shortstories), travel (how Americans dont embracethe idea of a gap year is beyond me) and school(he was in his final year of medical school, I was

working on my masters). All was going well, until

we heard the countdown to midnight.

Hayley Underwood is just a girl, like any other, who has had more than her fair sure

of great, and not so great, dates. A San Diego native, Hayley graduated from UC,

Santa Barbara with a BA in English and Art History, which lead her to a career

at InStyle Magazineand instyle.com. Today Hayley is a development producer at

Shilo, working with clients such as Project Runway, Verizon and McDonalds.

This was when the cold front entered. Avoices around us chanted down the num

After all, Im not Bridget Jones, I dont havpatience to wait for some cold British mawarm up to me.

As the party began to disperse, we both mour way to the door. Outside, he pulledaside to say goodbye and again, wheth

was the alcohol, the accent, or just my ou

ken American nature I looked him straigthe eye and blatantly asked him why he hkissed me at midnight. Now he, slightly t

aback by my maneuver, looked dumbfounbut rather than running away, he pulledclose and kissed me. Despite the snoaround us, it seemed as though his icy

rior had begun to melt, but then againwas only the beginning. Dont fret, therebe plenty more to come. After all, one do
