Living & Working in Sri Lanka
Working conditions and lifestyle
Filled with beauty and wonder, Sri Lanka draws thousands of tourists every year. Most people
will recognise tea as one of largest export industries in Sri Lanka, but there is much more to this
developing island nation. The main economic sectors of the country are tourism, tea, textiles and
apparel manufacturing and rice. In addition, many Sri Lankans work overseas, sending foreign
currency back to their families
Working in Sri Lanka brings with it all the joys and excitement of working in a developing nation.
The Sri Lankan people are warm and welcoming and the countryside is beautiful. Colombo,
where most large businesses reside, is a bustling, modern city, with plenty of air conditioning to
escape the high temperatures.
Living & Working in Sri Lanka*Expatriate concessions
Where the assessable income for any year of assessment of an individual consists solely of income from services rendered in Sri Lanka and does not
exceed Rs.300,000/- then such income is exempt from tax.
Though an expatriate employee is deemed a Resident Person under the provisions of the Sri Lanka Tax Laws, he is taxed at the concessionary rate of 15%
to 20% in the first 3 – 5 years.
Sri Lanka Economy:
Sri Lankan economy has registered a strong growth in the first decade of 21st
century, despite
suffering civil war from 1983 to 2009 and some major natural disasters. The gross domestic product
of the country grew at an average rate of 5% during the war period. One of the major factors
behind development and economic growth is government spending. Agricultural production,
tourism, textile, apparel and tea export are the biggest economic boosters. A lot of foreign
exchange also comes through overseas employment especially in the Middle East.
