Phases of The Moon
Moonlight
• The Moon does not emit light.
• It reflects the light from the Sun.
• The Moon looks bright at night.
• During the day the Moon cannot be seen because the sunlight is very bright.

Phases of the Moon
• The shape of the Moon changes from time to time.
• The changes occur because the area of the Moon surface that reflects sunlight changes while the Moon is moving around the Earth.
• The phases of the Moon consist of:
– New moon– Crescent– Half moon– Full moon
New Moon
• Occur when the surface of the Moon that is not illuminated by the Sun faces the Earth.
• The Moon cannot be seen from the Earth.
Crescent phase
• Only a small portion of the Moon that is illuminated by the Sun faces the Earth.
• The Moon appears to look like crescent from the Earth.
Half Moon phase
• Half of the Moon surface that is illuminated by the Sun faces the Earth.
• The Moon appears to look like a half circle.
Full Moon Phase
• The whole illuminated surface of the Moon faces the Earth.
• The Moon appears to look like a circle.
• The sequence of these moon phases will repeat consistently.
• The duration of the Moon from one phase to the next similar phase is 29½ days.

Lunar Calendar
• The Lunar Calendar is a calendar created based on the revolution of the Moon around the Earth following the phases of the Moon.
• Based on the lunar calendar:
– New Moon can be seen on the first day of lunar calendar.
– Crescent can be seen on the 3th day of Lunar calendar.
– Half Moon can be seen on the 7th day of Lunar calendar.
– Full Moon can be seen on the 15th day of the Lunar calendar.
