6.4 Scan Localizer app

6.4.1 Set IP addresses for Scan Localizer and Laser ScannerThe following steps have to be done only once, when starting-up with the system.

Figure 6-4: Settings dialog

1. In the Scan Localizer app dropdown menu, click Settings. The Settings dialog opens.

Scanner Connection

1. The field Scan Localizer Connection shows the IP address of the Scan Localizer. This address is fixed and must not be changed. Click the Test button to check if the Scan Localizer can be reached.

2. In the field Scanner Connection enter the IP address of the laser scanner. You can find the scanner‘s IP address on the scanner‘s label, or by tapping Manage > General Settings > Scanner Details > LAN IP address in the scanner‘s user interface. Enter the IP address as it is, following exactly the given scheme of digits and dots.

• To make the connection work, you have to switch off the Proxy server. If this is not possible for some reason, enter the addresses of both devices in the Exceptions field.

• We recommend to use a WLAN card which supports IEEE 802.11n.

• You can also connect Scan Localizer and computer via LAN connection. For this, deactivate WLAN, then connect both devices with a LAN cable. You can find the LAN socket on the bottom of the Scan Localizer.

We recommend not to work in SCENE after starting the Scan Localizer app.

3. Click the Link Scanner button to check if both devices are able to connect.

4. Click the Test button to check if the laser scanner can be reached.5. Click the Save button to save and close the Settings dialog.

Scan Localizer Configuration

After every scan, the system tries to register the current scan to the previous scan to check if the Cloud to Cloud registration can be executed successfully later. On slower machines, this could be slow and restrain your workflow. In this case uncheck Register after scan. This will still place the scans in the right position but will skip the registration check.

Scan Localizer Debug

The lower part of the dialog provides some error tracing functions and a possibility to update the Scan Localizer‘s firmware.

6.4.2 Scanning1. Bring the system in the position where the first scanning session shall

start.2. In the Scan Localizer app dropdown menu, click Start Scan Localizer.

3. Click the Power button on the bottom of the Scan Localizer. The Scan Localizer will start up. After that, the app shows a dialog with a 2D view of what the Scan Localizer detects. A blue dot shows the current position.

4. Click on the Start Scan button in the Scan Localizer app dialog. Now, the following will happen: • the panel on the right shows some status messages.• the laser scanner will start a scan.• the scan is saved to the SD card.• the scan is transferred to the computer and imported into SCENE.

5. Walk to the next scan positions. The Position Quality symbol on the right is shown in green if the position quality is good enough to place the scan in a proper position. The Laser View Free symbol is shown in green if there is nothing in the laser‘s field of view. After the scan is finished, it will again be imported to that cluster, and so on. As soon as at least 2 scans are saved to the cluster, SCENE will register them.

Pause and resume Mapping

It is possible to pause and resume the mapping process if • you need to interrupt the scanning process, • the notebook battery runs out of power,• or if the Scan Localizer appears to have problems. The mapping can be paused to check the 3D scan in SCENE. To pause the app, simply click the Cancel button. The Scan Localizer will continue the mapping process, the LED‘s still blinking red.As soon as the app is opened again, it will ask if the current mapping process should be continued or if a new process should be started. If the process is continued, a new cluster will be opened in SCENE.This is also working if the notebook battery runs out of power. If the same notebook or another notebook is used, it is possible to continue the mapping. Just start the Scan Localizer again.

Finish and register 6. Click the Finish button to finish a scanning session. Now, all scans in the cluster will be registered.

New scanning session

7. If you are satisfied with the result, move the system to the position where the next scanning session shall start. Click on the Start Scan button in the Scan Localizer app. A new cluster will be created, and the next scans will be saved to this cluster.

8. Continue until your project is finished.

Position Quality Green: The position quality is good enough to place the scan in a proper position.Red: The position quality is not good enough and can contain an error with a very high probability. If the map is not working correctly anymore, close the current work step by clicking the Finish button and start a new cluster.

Laser View Free Green: Everything is okay. The laser can see enough of its environment.Red: The view of the laser is completely or partly covered. This can lead to a bad position quality and to a wrong positioning of the scans. Try to free up the space in front of the laser scanner. This error can be produced by persons standing very close in front of the Scan Localizer.

Scan Localizer Status

Green: Everything is ok.Red: There is a problem with one of the sensors in the Scan Localizer. Scan Localizer LED will also change its color to orange. Restart the system. If the error remains, contact Customer Support.

Clicking the Finish button will also finish the scanning session after a scan got lost or the mapping is wrong.

6.5 LED Behavior of the Scan Localizer

6.6 Shutting Down

6.6.1 Laser ScannerTo shut down the laser scanner, shortly press its On/Off button or use the shutdown button in the controller software under Home > Manage. All LEDs will start blinking blue. As soon as the laser scanner has finished the shutdown process, the LEDs will stop blinking and you can safely remove the battery and the power supply.

• Scan Localizer can calculate the position correctly if it is moved on the same height level. If the project continues in another height level, for example in another floor, a new cluster has to be started. Click the Cancel or the Finish button to end the first cluster, and to start the next.

• If there is an error in the mapping process, this can be due to missing environment features. If the position of the scans is obviously wrong, a new cluster can be started and the mapping will be reseted. After the next scan (or later), the position of the new cluster can be manually adapted.

The LED behavior of the laser scanner is described in the laser scanner‘s user manual.

6.6.2 FARO® Scan LocalizerPress the Power button. Wait until the red and blue indicator lights turn off.

CAUTION

Damages to the scanner‘s internal PC and loss of data.Do not turn off the power of the laser scanner before the shut down cycle is complete. The laser scanner has an integrated PC with an SD card. This SD card must be shut down before turning off the power supply. If the power supply is disconnected or switched off without the laser scanner being previously shut down, it may damage the internal PC and might lead to a loss of data.If the laser scanner had not been shut down properly, the next boot process could take more time as usual as the laser scanner might check its hard disk for errors. Some settings, which were made shortly before shutting down the laser scanner, might also be lost.

FARO also feels that once the trainee completes the training, finding solutions to problems or applying applications will be simpler. Details are as follows:

1. The training class will prepare attendees to successfully attain an operator’s certification (see Certification Requirements section below for more details).

2. The fee schedules for advanced additional training courses can be obtained from Customer Service, or the Sales department.

Certification RequirementsAn operator’s inherent ability to understand 3D concepts may be in their background training. However, the precision with which the operator performs 3D measurements with the Hardware Device is critical in establishing the accuracy and repeatability of the results of subsequent measurements.

In order to establish the proficiency of operators, FARO has instituted an Operator Certification program, wherein each operator’s knowledge and understanding of the Hardware Device is evaluated. The successful operator is awarded a certificate which identifies him/her as an accredited operator of the product. The requirements are as follows:

1. Attend a FARO-conducted basic training course, either at a FARO Facility or on site at your facility.

2. Certification will be awarded once the class has been completed, and then the certified user will be registered for hardware and software support.

To certify an operator, please contact your local FARO office.

Repair Fee Schedule(Out of Warranty/Maintenance Owners Only!)

System Testing and Evaluation Fee - Contact your local FARO Service Center for pricing.

A fee is charged for any system testing and evaluation. This includes system diagnosis, compensation and calibration, and applies to all FARO-manufactured hardware. However, this fee does not include disassembly/repair costs if required. An estimated cost for disassembly/repair will be given to the customer prior to the repair. The disassembly/repair charges must be paid in full prior to the actual disassembly/repair. However, if no repairs are needed the fee will be applied to the cost of system testing and evaluation. All evaluations contain a calibration. Recertification will be performed on an “as needed” basis.

Contact your local FARO Service Center for the current system testing and evaluation fee pricing.
