The tales of new and inspiring acvies experienced, challenges met, and friendships formed were wonderful to hear. It is great to hear from staff and from others involved in the trips, such as coach drivers, that students have been a credit to their families and their school while they have been away from home. Long trips that take students away from home – oſten for the first me – are complex and rely on huge amounts of staff input and the willingness of students to recognise the boundaries and to behave well. The vast majority of our students have done this extremely well, and I am proud of their efforts. I am also extremely grateful for staff for going the extra milein many cases, this can be taken literally! One special menon should go to our Year 12 Duke of Edinburgh Gold students, who completed their 4-day expedion very successfully, pushing themselves and each other to finish a very challenging extended hike. It is very unusual for a school to have a substanal number of student who are on track to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold while sll at school, but this years group (perhaps inspired by past successes) certainly have their eyes on the prize. We wish them all the best. The past few weeks has also seen another triumph on the school stage – this me our junior producon of Oliver! I was hugely impressed by the cohesion and team work of the many groups of students who took part – everyone from the band to the scene shiſters worked relessly, and together, to create a wonderfully entertaining version of the great Dickens story of loss and resilience. Thanks to everyone who took part for their efforts. The Sports Awards and Parcipaon Evening again followed our new format, and I was extremely pleased to see so many people in aendance, trying out a range of sports and establishing contacts with local clubs which offer great opportunies to develop skills and passions. It was a lovely event, bathed – very fortunately again – in glorious sunshine. Looking ahead to next academic year, I would like to ask that all our families take note that our Sponsored Walk will take place in September. We will be asking all students and staff to take part, as usual, and to use the opportunity to have a great me with friends, while raising money for the school and for local charies. This year, the money raised for school use will go towards the costs of maintaining our extra-curricular programme (including such key elements as Duke of Edinburgh and the Green Council). I believe that this programme offers great opportunies for our students to learn and develop, and that it is one of the things that makes the school special. Your fundraising in September will help to protect it for the future. I hope that you all have a safe, sunny and very happy summer holiday. Farlingaye HIGH SCHOOL“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon: to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” (Henry James)

Head’s Message I was delighted to welcome back several of our Activities Week trips to school yesterday evening. The tales of new and inspiring activities experienced, challenges met, and friendships formed were wonderful to hear. It is great to hear from staff and from others involved in the trips, such as coach drivers, that students have been a credit to their families and their school while they have been away from home. Long trips that take students away from home – often for the first time – are complex and rely on huge amounts of staff input and the willingness of students to recognise the boundaries and to behave well. It is very unusual for a school to have a substantial number of student who are on track to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold while still at school, but this year’s group (perhaps inspired by past successes) certainly have their eyes on the prize. We wish them all the best. The past few weeks has also seen another triumph on the school stage – this time our junior production of Oliver! I was hugely impressed by the cohesion and team work of the many groups of students who took part – everyone from the band to the scene shifters worked tirelessly, and together, to create a wonderfully entertaining version of the great Dickens story of loss and resilience. Eventers Challenge National Finals At Hickstead For many equestrians, the privilege of being able to compete at Hickstead is a dream come true. This is akin to competing at Wembley or Twickenham! During the May Bank Holiday, the Farlingaye Flyers enjoyed their opportunity and came away with National Rosettes recognising their top 10 finishes in a number of equestrian disciplines. The team entered a mixed height competition in which heights graduated higher throughout the competition. Beth Fewings on Merlin completed the highest height (1-1.05m) and very nearly went clear. Freddy Anderson on Frisko (90-95cm), Lucy Kidwell on Sammy (80-85cm) and Olivia Lubbock on Prince (70-75cm) all went clear with the team not only impressing their competitors but putting themselves in a great chance of the ribbons. When the results were in, Farlingaye was awarded 8th place out of 20 schools at the National Finals! A great start to the weekend of competitions ahead. The next day saw the 90-95cm team compete in the Eventer's Challenge National Finals but their fortunes were not with them on a very technical course consisting of both huge show jumps and cross country fences. Despite enjoying the amazing facility and putting every effort into completing their round, this exceptionally demanding course proved far too testing, and, unfortunately, Farlingaye did not feature in the ribbons this time. Olivia Lubbock and Prince were then competing in the 70-75cm Eventer's Challenge National Finals as an individual for Farlingaye. Again, this course had a number of challenging fences, but she and Prince flew round, producing a fantastic clear. Her finishing time was only 1.52 seconds off the optimum, putting Olivia in 6th place nationally out of 45 Schools and over 136 competitors! Credit must go to all of the Farlingaye Flyers. The team spends a lot of time and effort training and preparing for the qualifying events and the National Championships, not only in maintaining the fitness of their horses, but also with their own personal fitness. The results have shone through with Farlingaye High School having qualified for four National Championship Finals and the Plate National Finals this year alone!

Synchronised Swimming Three students in Year 8 are learning synchronised swimming. Meredith Beattie, Yasmine Holbrook and Lorna Murphy take lessons at Dolphin Pools, Clopton as part of a group of 10 synchronised swimmers. Meredith and Lorna have been doing this for 2 years with Yasmine joining more recently. They put on annual displays to showcase their skills. The girls love learning different moves and have fun working as a group. They said, “It’s like gymnastics in the water. It keeps us very fit, developing our core muscles.”

Show Jumping A Year 8 student is following her dream of competing in horse shows with her two horses. Serena Gillingham has secured sponsorship from Stephanie Turner, a top show producer, competitor and judge. She also has sponsorship from Wonderpost, a local compost business. This season she has qualified for the British Show Pony Society 50th Anniversary Show and Championships, Equifest 2019, Best Rider and Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. She is entering the qualifiers for the Horse of the Year Show, which is her ultimate dream goal in Showing. She came third in the Show Hunter Pony Class and first in Best Local Rider with her new competition pony “Greylands Stardust” and second in a Mountain and Moorland Class with “Chlorreton Pizazz”. All this competing is setting her up in good stead for her career goal of being a Show Producer.

Tennis Ashton Boswell, Year 7, and Alana Bristow, Year 8, were both part of a group of 24 Suffolk tennis players to be invited to The Hurlingham Club in London. There they spent time on court with Greg Rusedski, Mark Phillipoussis, Thomas Enqvist and Mikael Pernfors - all former tennis greats and finalists at major tennis events. They were then given tickets to watch the first matches of the Aspall Tennis Classic - a singles match between Kevin Anderson and Felix Auger-Aliassime, and an exhibition doubles match where Greg Rusedski and Mikael Pernfors took on Mansour Bahrami and Mark Phillipoussis. It was a long and tiring day, but an amazing experience for all involved. Ashton went on to play in an U12 County Cup event over two days at Frinton LTC where, along with his team mates they succeeded in beating Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire, Norfolk and most crucially Essex to gain a place in the National Final to be held in Bolton on 12-14th July. The event came down to a 'shoot-out' between Suffolk and Essex where Ashton and his doubles partner fought hard to win 15-13 in a Championship tie-break!

Crumble Programming Line Following UK Finals at BT On Thursday 27th June, Mr White took seven Year 7 and 8 students (Jamie Whittle, Jacob Kemp, Ethan Lewis, Freddie Moore, Hayden Cowell, Ryan Lillistone, Leo Mason) to BT at Adastral Park for the CrumbleBot Line Following UK Finals. As soon as the students arrived, they had about 15 minutes to prepare their code and test their CrumbleBots. For the rest of the day they had to run their CrumbleBots on about 12 different tracks. Each run was timed and they were awarded points. Competition was very tough, with over 12 teams from all over Suffolk and Norfolk. Ryan and Leo got through to the semi-finals of the ‘pursuit’ event. They fought hard and won that round, then went on to the final head-to-head knockout round, but were beaten by a faster Bot. The day finished with a presentation of certificates for winning individual events. Ryan and Leo came 2nd overall which is a brilliant achievement. The teams worked really hard and are now looking forward to next years’ competition. A good day was had by all.

FHSF Car Boot Sale At the beginning of June, the FHSF hosted a Car Boot Sale on site. It was a gloriously warm day and the event was very well attended, with 48 pitches and a large number of customers. The raffle was well supported as was the refreshment stand, raising even more money for the school. FHSF raised £700 to be spent on extra activities within school. Keep your eyes peeled for future events.

Endeavour Technology and ICT Enrichment Morning: On Tuesday June 25th, 65 students from Years 7 and 8 were involved in our annual Endeavour Technology and ICT Enrichment Morning. Students were selected to participate in specific subject sessions including Resistant Materials, ICT, Systems & Control and Catering throughout the morning. A whole range of exciting activities were organised for students to take part in. Students involved in the Systems & Control session worked in small groups to complete mini-challenges looking at mechanisms, energy and forms motion through Lego. In Resistant Materials, students investigated aerodynamics and designed and created cars with an aim to achieve the highest speed. Over in ICT, Students were shown how to program a robotic buggy or created electronic dice using BBC micro bits and electronics kits. Students had to put the electronic circuits together and write out the code for a program that would generate a random number and then display it using the LEDs. Finally, over in Catering, students learnt about and created an ambitious afternoon tea, containing a wonderful selection of sweet and savoury treats. The morning was a real success and students commented on how much they had enjoyed the opportunity to focus on an area of Technology for an extended period of time. As a Faculty, we are looking forward to next year’s Enrichment Morning already!

Woodbridge Dementia Project On Friday May 24th, our Farlingaye String Quartet played for the Woodbridge Dementia Project by the Waterfront in Woodbridge. It was a beautiful, albeit breezy, afternoon! The music was very well received and provided a lovely background for the event.

Mini fest The weather was lovely and clearly someone was smiling down on us for the day! Our 40 musicians played on the stage and over 20 charities and concerns joined us for the evening. The audience was bigger than last year with around 400 attending. It was really great to see people chatting to stallholders, enjoying the music, the BBQ and the face painting.

Music for a summer’s evening Monday June 24th was the evening of our Summer concert. This was a poignant evening full of committed and brilliant musicians playing and singing a variety of pieces to an excellent standard. From our Junior Boys and their dance to “The Final Countdown”, through to Chamber Choir with “Bohemian Rhapsody” and then to Sinfonia and Big Band. It was a wonderful concert. As I said at the concert, we could not have produced all the music events this term without the commitment of our musicians. The older students went above and beyond to help rehearse, prepare and keep things going. The Year 13 students who leave us this year are a very special bunch of young adults! Thank you for your support as parents too, we are so lucky to have you behind the students and ensuring they are where needed whenever! I has been another busy year of music making and I am now planning the music tour to Leghano, Italy for next July so there is more to come. Our sincere thanks for your continued support. Ms Martino

PE Endeavour Trip A lucky 16 students attended a PE Endeavour trip this to Clip and Climb, the climbing centre in Ipswich! The students went out of their comfort zones and performed brilliantly. We were the first full group to attend the brand new centre at Ransom Euro Park. Thanks to Clip and Climb for the free session. Local news team and media were there so look out for the story! Thanks to Ms Enright for her help organising this trip.

Year 10 German visit the University of Cambridge Ciao! On Thursday June 27th, 10 students from Year 10 were part of a language taster day at Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge. The day consisted of a workshop in German, Italian and Hebrew, all of which were led by tutors in those languages. We first took part in the German workshop, which involved learning more about German culture and history, as well as expanding our vocabulary. We completed activities about the Berlin Wall and at the end we wrote a poem. This poem helped us to empathise with this part of German history and further understand the culture. I really enjoyed this experience in further developing our German. Nellee Berry Our next workshop was Italian. We learnt a selection of basic words such as the Italian numbers one to ten, a few animals and some grammatical rules as well as typical greetings. The tutor of the workshop spoke to us in Italian right from the beginning, so this was quite intense. However, by the end, we had picked up a few phrases, which was very good. Iris Rea and Imogen Swale After lunch, we had our last workshop, Hebrew. The tutor used an immersive learning technique which consisted of him only speaking in Hebrew, like the tutor teaching us Italian. This allowed us to instantaneously adapt to the new Abjad script. In addition, the tutor used hand gestures and spoke clearer to allow us to comprehend what he was saying quickly. Next, we moved onto translating Hebrew words, which introduced us to the alphabet and form of writing (right to left). We used a sheet with the translated letters on to hone our problem solving skills, which are vital in language learning, and to sharpen our cognitive processes. During the workshop, he presented the opportunities within the Asian and Middle Eastern Faculty at Cambridge, and how they interlinked with the university’s Modern and Medieval Language courses of study. Overall, the workshop was both interactive and informative, giving us valuable experience of what it would be like to study an ab initio language at degree level. On the whole, our day was thoroughly enjoyable and full of information about the paths we could take to studying languages at Cambridge in the future. Neave Matthews and Matilda Nunn

TeenTech Winner In June, the Technology department took a group of inspired students to the TeenTech Finals in London. All their entries were enthusiastically received and Jean-Baptiste Bonniot was judged a winner in the Manufacturing category for his portable hydro electric generator. He was inspired to harness the power of moving water by the Ffestiniog reservoir that provides extra electricity at times of high demand by releasing tonnes of water through turbines. JB designed a low cost unit that will fit into a guttering downpipe and can charge a battery of various sizes by turning a generator with the power of the flow of rainwater. His unit could also be used in the outdoor environment by putting it into a stream or river. The moving parts were all 3D printed to his own design specification. Well done, JB.

Modern Languages Masterclasses for A level students at the

University of Cambridge On Wednesday June 26th, a group of A level Language students took part in a ‘taster day’ at Magdalene College, Cambridge, in which the university expressed the many benefits of studying languages at a higher education level. We separated into individual language ‘booster sessions’ in French, German and Spanish. In French, for example, we considered the differences in spoken language between the older and younger generations, including strong words or “verlan” as well as looking at introductions to studying translation. Following this, we then took part in introductory sessions to unfamiliar languages: Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese and Russian. This was a very interesting experience and gave an insight into another perspective of studying languages. In Chinese, we learnt about the role of ‘tones’ in pronunciation which alters the meaning of words. Overall, the entire day was very useful and beneficial. It covered different aspects to studying languages which are not used in A Level classes, as well as reinforcing the importance of learning languages in the competitive job market, where a range of skills are required. Oliver! The Lower School Production this year was a spectacular version of Oliver! As always, the students worked on every aspect of the production, from the acting, singing and dancing to the music, backstage work and technical support. They worked extremely hard to pull off four streamlined performances, which had the audience continually alternating between laughter and tears. Over 130 students and many staff members and parents were involved in the production, giving up hours of their time to perfect their roles. The performers produced memorable moments, from Nancy and Oliver each singing heartbreakingly about their search for love to Fagin and his gang providing great entertainment with humorous singing and perfect comic timing. Bill Sikes was wonderfully menacing. They were strongly supported by fabulous groups of singers and dancers. It was another resounding successful. Well done everyone involved.

BAFTA We had a special visit from Matthew Applegate last week. Matthew runs the Creative Computing Centre in Ipswich and also our Creative Computing Club here at school. On his third nomination, he finally won the BAFTA YGD Mentor Award, for teachers and mentors inspiring young game designers of the future. He brought his BAFTA award in to show his students and to show them how important and respected working in this area is. Well deserved, Matthew.
