This programme is designed to allow several of our Sixth Form students to represent the school through involvement in events and acvies inside school and within the local community. We know that these students will be determined to encapsulate and present the best elements of Farlingaye and I was delighted that we were able to give all students the opportunity to take part in a vote to decide who should become our Senior Ambassadors. More than 1500 votes were cast and the students elected to serve were Sidney Pycroſt, Will Atkinson, Erin Hamilton and Anna Vincent. I would like to thank them, and the other students who put themselves forward for the role, for their parcipaon in this process. We look forward to working with them. Farlingaye HIGH SCHOOL “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others” – Albert Schweitzer

Head’s Message The importance of doing things for others, and of finding real purpose and fulfilment in doing so, will be key features of the next few weeks at Farlingaye as we move towards the holiday season and students prepare for participation in the many activities and events linked to this time of year. We have already successfully completed our Shoebox Appeal, and it was lovely to see the pile of shiny colourful boxes grow and grow as the deadline approached. CoSpace Programming at BT On Wednesday October 18th , Mr White took 18 Year 7 and 8 students to BT Martlesham for a CoSpace programming taster day. The day started with an enthusiastic talk by BT employees about the format for the day and then they got straight into programming. They started with a series of simple tasks to program their onscreen robot within the CoSpace environment. The virtual robot has to collect coloured blocks and deposit them to gain points. The team with the most points win. The tasks became more challenging as the day went on and the students had to show determination and resilience to successfully complete them in the time given. In the afternoon, the students had to fine-tune their programs and then had a head-to-head competition with other teams. This was really exciting and the standard very high with impressive scores being achieved. Although we did not win the final mini competition, our 4 teams did really well. Great fun was had by all and we are now looking forward to the National Final Competition in April 2018. The students who attended were:- Tilly Crookall, Jason Czarnota, Samuel Free, Connor Skilton-Keely, Liam Charleston, Sam Garratt, Cameron Charleston and Igor Wroblewski. Mr White

Boccia Trip On Thursday November 9th , nine other Discovery Club members and I attended a Boccia tournament at Inspire Suffolk in Ipswich. Boccia is a disability sport that tests muscle control and accuracy and is very similar to the modern game of bowls. We were split into two teams, A and B. Sean Lambert, Byron Eaglen, Summer White, Jorja Brimicombe and I made up Team A. Joshua Emmens, Lewis Farebrother, Ethan Moss, Joshua Currie and Thomas Bradmore made up Team B. Both the A and B team made easy work of the group stages, comfortably topping their respective groups, however sterner opposition awaited us in the ensuing rounds. Both teams competed and fought to the end, however neither team was able to make it all the way. Team A finished a respectable 7th after falling at the quarter final stage to a very good Felixstowe Academy side. Overall Team B finished 4th after being knocked out at the semi-final stage against the same opponents that knocked out our A team (Felixstowe Academy). This top four finish gives them the outside possibility of qualifying for the regional finals to be held in Lowestoft on March 1st 2018. With special thanks to Mr. Hall, Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Crookall for arranging and organising the trip, as well as accompanying us to Inspire Suffolk. Mr Johnson said, “All the students represented the school to the highest possible standard and they can all be very proud of what they have achieved and accomplished” Lucas Robinson

The HOPEwalk Last month, aiming to shatter the stigma and “start a conversation” about suicide, the University of Suffolk hosted the HOPEwalk in Ipswich. Over 50 students from Farlingaye and the University of Suffolk’s Student Union walked through Ipswich Waterfront in a sea of purple. Participants paid £5 and wore purple to take part in the event which was raising funds and awareness for young suicide prevention charity Papyrus. Every penny raised by the HOPEwalk will help to extend the hours of Papyrus’ national helpline, HOPELineUK. On the day, £385.80 was raised from donations. Last summer, our readathon pledged a donation of nearly £500 for Papyrus. Well done, everyone!

History Trip On November 13th, 37 History A Level students went on a trip to the Camden Centre, in London. Throughout the day we listened to various lectures from inspiring well known historians, each lasting between 45 minutes to an hour. Our first lecture was from Dr John Guy, who spoke to us all about the reign of Edward VI. He split his lecture into a series of key factors discussing Edward’s foreign, domestic, religious and financial policy, as well as discussing Edward’s decision to alter his will to adapt the succession. The second lecture we heard was by Professor John Morrill discussing the reign of Henry VIII and his break from Rome as a result of the Great Matter, emphasising the significance that the succession crisis played in his decision to create the Church of England. Dr John Guy then presented another lecture debating whether the reign of Mary Tudor was successful. He came to the overall conclusion that Mary was on the whole an unsuccessful monarch. Finally, we heard from David Starkey discussing the reign of Henry VII. Starkey was the historian that we were most familiar with, so for many of us, this was the one we were looking forward to the most. He did not disappoint, giving an enlightening insight into how Henry VII came to the throne, and the challenges he faced throughout his reign. We even had the opportunity to get some group photos with David Starkey. All in all we had an excellent day and feel very fortunate to hear first-hand from such an experienced and renowned group of historians, who we have read about in our textbooks, bringing their views and opinions to life. Lois Budloo and Rosie Challis, Year 13

A Career in Investment Banking for Economics Students On Friday November 17th, more than 40 Economics Sixth Form students and members of our IFS Junior Investor (Stock Market) Club were treated to a talk on a Career in Investment Banking and Market Trading by John Welch a local independent fund manager. John introduced his talk with an overview of his career history from Economics and Maths graduate through to his time in Hong Kong with the Bank of Canada and up to the present as an independent fund manager, analyst and advisor. Useful carer advice was given; the importance of a degree, the importance of apprenticeship/internship training and the importance of financial qualifications. Students were advised to think about qualifications for the long term but also to be prepared for hard work and long hours. John talked students through investment strategies that they might like to use in their approaches to their own share portfolios. He provided an overview of the ‘Risk Return model’ and the types of investments products found along its spectrum. Whilst our Junior Investors perhaps have a high tolerance for risk John urged the need for a diversified portfolio. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions and some stayed to chat to John further about career opportunities and market positions of their current portfolios. John’s anecdotes brought life to the discussion highlighting both his successes as well as missed opportunities. Economics is taught to students within a real-world context and constantly applied to current contexts and topics. This talk is one of a number of opportunities provided for our students. “It was a great opportunity to be able to apply what we have been learning in Economics to real life examples. My uncle was an investment banker and I have a strong interest in this area – I hope to go on to pursue a job in stock-broking/trading and found the career advice really useful. I would recommend the Junior Investor Challenge Club on Friday lunchtimes for 6th formers interested in this this type of career as well.” Louis Linsley, Year 13 Further information about Economics or Business courses are available from: Mr Edge

2017 Sponsored Walk Update Currently the 2017 Sponsored Walk has raised just over £22,400. This is a fantastic amount and a huge thank you to all students and families for helping to raise this. From this amount we have recently ordered a teak three-seater bench to be placed in a small enclosed ‘memorial’ garden for the late Becky and Katie Ashton. The school gardening club are going to plant up either side of the bench - pink colours to the left, as it was Katie’s favourite colour and purple colours to the right, Becky’s favourite colour. This is an ongoing project and will hopefully be ready for the Spring. In the New Year, we will be asking the students to vote for their chosen charities as well as using the money to put towards some outdoor wet-weather shelters. We have also ordered three 3-D printers for the Library which will enable students to repair and create products outside of lesson time. As noted before, it was a great fun day out and a large majority of students and staff embraced the fancy-dress theme. Spot prizes were given to the best fancy dress outfits deemed within each year group and these individuals have received their prizes. As you know, we are looking to close the books for this as soon as possible and when we have done so we will be able to work out the tutor group who raised the most money as their prize will be a fun day out – along with five individuals who raised the most money (who each get to choose a friend to accompany them). There will also be prizes for form groups who raised the most money within their year group too and this will be announced soon. Thank you once again for all your support.

Year 7 Football It has been another spectacular win for the Farlingaye Year 7 boys’ football team winning 8-2 against Hartismere. They were a decent side but the boys out-played them. Asa Heron scored four, Jack Bye scored two, Arthur Noble and Will Hartman each scored one. The highlight of the game was Asa’s free kick. It was just outside the box and he drilled it into the bottom left corner! Now the boys are through to the next round of the national and county cups. Their next fixture is against Pakefield after the Christmas break.

Mountfitchet Castle - Year 7 visit On Friday October 13th, the History department took the whole of Year 7 on our annual trip to Mountfitchet Castle. The visit to the motte and bailey castle fits in with our study of the Normans and allows students to see for themselves what the early Norman castles would have looked like and how they operated. Sofia Brooks (7L) said “It was an interesting and extremely informative trip. I really liked how realistic the whole site looked, it made me think I was there at the time because there were animals, sound effects and models who spoke and gave information about what it would have been like at the time. The suits of armour were incredible and also you could put your head through the guillotine which was scary, so I didn’t do it - although many others did! Overall, I really enjoyed the trip.” Miss Ring

Gift donations required for Senior Citizens Christmas Concert Tickets for this popular event have already been reserved. As you may know, the students and Music Department put on a lovely Christmas Concert each year for local residents and it is traditional that they are all given a little Christmas gift at the end of the afternoon as they leave. If you are able to please donate a gift for this we would really appreciate it – a small box of chocolates, nice biscuits or other suitable gift would be lovely. Please donate any items to the School Reception – thank you.

Christmas Hamper Day – Friday 15th December 2017 (& Christmas Jumper Day!) For those parents/carers new to the school, this is another important date in the calendar and more details will be available nearer the time. In order for students to wear non-uniform on the last day of term, they have to bring in one food item to go towards our hampers. This can be any food item, a tin of beans, cans of soup, nice box of biscuits, chocolates, jams, etc. – and nothing alcoholic. Each form then works on creating a lovely hamper. These hampers are then created in form time and on the 15th December they are exhibited in the Dining Hall before being delivered to local individuals or worthy charities in the area. This also happens to fall on our annual Christmas Jumper Day where students wear full school uniform but a Christmas Jumper instead of the school uniform jumper – on this one day only!

Hamper Nominations Required We are currently contacting local churches and charities to receive our hampers. If any parents/carers know of any local worthy charities who would like to receive one of our food hampers, or you know of any elderly individuals who would appreciate a hamper, then please let Mrs Karen Ling, the Headteacher’s Secretary know on Tel: 01394 385720 Ext: 270 or please send her an email to: [email protected] and notify her by Friday 1st December. Thank you.

Students Meet Professional Match Officials Year 8 students were given the opportunity to meet professional football match officials from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) organisation. We had a whole year assembly and a literacy session for selected students delivered by three members of the PGMOL organisation – Lee Betts, Dan Robathan and Carl Fitch. To add to the excitement, Anglia News sent a cameraman to capture the whole event and it was shown on the 6pm News on Friday November 17th. The school has been working this year on developing character education with the fundamental principles being kindness, honesty, resilience, optimism, respect for others and acceptance with our students. The visit of match officials has accompanied other projects including Humanutopia with the objectives of instilling important core values to prepare students for the challenges they will inevitably face in the years to come. Lee has been a Premier League match official since 2012, he was an assistant referee on the League Cup final between Chelsea and Tottenham in 2015 and was promoted to FIFA in 2016. He was also appointed to the Euro and World Cup Qualifiers in 2015/2016. Lee said “The PGMOL is keen to share its core values of integrity, community, honesty, courage, accountability and innovation. We believe the core values of our organisation are transferable and important within education system today.” The students thoroughly enjoyed their morning with the match officials.

Life Saving Sessions As part of Hi Five Week in October, students and members of staff had the opportunity to attend sessions to learn how to save lives using CPR and the safe use of Automated External Defibrillators. They also learned about advanced airway management skills and tried out hospital techniques. The training was delivered by Jayne, an Advanced Life Support trainer, and Mickey, a Cardiology Nurse Specialist. The sessions were very informative and the participants came away confident that they could help someone in cardiac arrest.
