Farewell to Uniting Church at Yarrawalla

On Sunday 3rd November at 11am, the Yarrawalla Uniting Church

held their last service. Over the years numbers attending church have

been dwindling, and the congregation decided it was time to close the

church.

Around 160 people attended on the day, with the service conducted by

a lay team, involving congregation members. The message was

delivered by Lyndsay Falls and communion led by Ron Peacock.

Hymns chosen came from the inauguration service, the centenary

service and the service celebrating the 125 year anniversary, as well as

some contemporary hymns. Judi Miles said, “The congregation chose

this type of service as this is how we have been having church for a

long time, and it didn’t feel right to have a conventional service after

all this time.” The service concluded with a decommissioning by Judy

Berridge from the Presbytery.

Lunch was provided by the Bears Lagoon Anglican Church in the hall

afterwards, where a number of former ministers and parishioners were

interviewed about their memories. The day concluded around 3pm

and was a true celebration of the church and its role in the community

since 1875.

Oxfam Trailwalker 2013 The Pelly Woodsides

Polly Woodside is a Belfast-built, three masted, iron-hulled barque,

preserved in Melbourne and forming the central feature of tht South Wharf precinct. The ship was originally built in Belfast by William J.

Woodside and was launched in 1885. “Polly Woodside” is typical of

thousands of smaller iron barques, built in the last days of sail, intended for deep water trade around the world

and designed to be operated as economically as possible (from

Wikipedia)

Pelly Woodside is a well-built, four women team, strongly focussed,

preserved in North Central Victoria. The idea of the team was originally born in Pyramid Hill and was first

launched in 2012. Pelly Woodside is typical of hundreds of other teams

participating in Oxfam 2014, although this team completes the course as one, with the aim to do so in less than a day. Built over the period of the mid 1960’2—70’s, these ladies too, are designed to be operated as economi-

cally as possible.

This year, the Pelly Woodsides - Donna Wood, Colleen Hampson, Josie Hunter and Cathy Wood have pledged to raise $3,000 for Oxfam. You can help us reach this target by ordering a Christmas cake from

Colleen, or purchasing Donna’s home made Christmas cards from the

Coffee Bank. You can also log on to our webspace https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/team/home16147 and make a donation, or just keep an eye on our progress.

Furniture Collection: Lions still have requests for used furniture and items will be collected if Lion Bill Quinn is contacted on the above phone number. Lions will also arrange the collection of old motor batteries no longer of any use. Christmas Cakes: These are available at the usual points of Business or on request to any Lion. It will not be long until Christmas so don’t miss out on securing your cake.

District Governor’s Visit

On the evening of 27th November, District Governor, Lynn Fredericks, accompanied by his lady Pam, were welcomed at the Victoria Hotel when the Lions celebrated their Christmas Dinner at a tastefully decorated by Lion Tania. A special part of this meeting was the Lions welcome of new Lion member Colleen Fidler, who was inducted by the District Governor, who with all members wished her a long and happy association with the Lions Club. Following the introduction by Zone Chairman, Norm Walkington, an inspiring address was presented by D. G. Lynn, who spoke of local and world-wide works undertaken by the Lions Movement for the betterment of people and communities, when help is needed. Sometimes this need is following natural disasters and others are for sight, hearing or other ailments or accidents affecting people both local and in wider areas. The D.G. also presented 45-Year Membership Certificates to Lion, Graham Moon and Graeme Stevens, who was absent.

Lions News

Lions Market: We look forward to the December Christmas market on the Saturday 14th from 9am until 1pm . It is on good advice we learn that Santa is expected to make an appearance along with some Christmas music. There will be a handout of literature from the Spanner in The Works program distributed from the Cuppa and cakes Stall conducted by the men from Men’s Shed. There will also be the beautiful Calendar produced at Neighbourhood House. These Calendars, loaded with local flora and fauna photos, would make excellent Christmas presents or an all-purpose one in the home. There will also be a BBQ Recipe Book from Bendigo Community Health.

Some even expressed open anger at Major Mitchell who had crossed this country in a good season, for his reports. Some had left better grassed and watered land to select in the Mincha area. Michael Buckley was born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1837 and came to Australia in 1849 to spend some years on the goldfields and farming before coming to Pyramid Hill. His wife Elizabeth was also born in Ireland, her father being Timothy McCarthy who brought his family to Australia during1840. They were married in 1857 and in 1859 they went to Modewarre, near Geelong with their first child. During their residence there, seven more children were born. Their trip to Pyramid Hill occupied 14 days and with them they brought a wagon, chaise cart, 40 cattle, pigs etc. Christmas Day was spent at the Steele’s homestead near Raywood and they arrived at Pyramid Hill two days later. There was a flood in the district at the time and Hartney, Larkins and Laceys, whom had already selected, heard of the Buckleys’ approach and went to meet them and guide them from Mologa. Although 1875 was a good year, other years were harsh. Cattle had to be driven to Bullock Creek for water, and in worse years when the Piccaninny and Rowan waterholes dried up and there was insufficient water in the other creeks, Barr Creek and Loddon River were the nearest water. Some of the settlers found life too tough and were forced to quit.

Terrick Terrick State School No

1721 From the Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette The attendance for six months to March was so small owing to the drought and epithalamia this being severe infectious conjunctivitis. The services of the sewing mistress, Mrs R. Bell were dispensed with for six months from July.

Drought of 1882. Copied from the Lockington Community News. Tuesday March 7 1882. Echuca – Accounts of hardship following the wake of the water famine continue to come from the westward. Farmers in the Parishes of Terrick Terrick East, Terrick Terrick West, Wharparilla, Patho, Torrumbarry and right through Loddon and Pyramid Hill are in sore straits for want of water. All the water in the district has now given out with the exception of a few wells and one hole in the Piccaninny Creek near the Prairie Station. The drain on this hole is tremendous, hundreds of cattle and sheep being always there, besides human beings. Several selectors have left their land and settled down on the margin of the creek. This source of supply will probably give out in a few days, and then the selectors will probably migrate to the Murray. The selectors are now carting water 15 to 20 miles from the Murray, Goulburn, Loddon and Campaspe. The Kow Swamp is only a few inches in depth for several miles and the deepest part is not more than 3 feet of water. Affairs are rapidly approaching a crisis in this district in the matter of water supply. At the meeting of the Echuca Shire Council yesterday all the business-es of a meeting that lasted till 9 pm were connected to water supply. The Council agreed to pay owners of wells for water supplied to farmers and gave instruction for the expenditure of several thousand pounds in forming and deepening tanks and providing wells. The boring auger at Timmering was described as a partial failure, it taking over 2 months to bore a depth of 146 feet, when only a small supply of indifferent water was met. The Echuca Shire extends beyond the Broken Creek in the east to the Picaninny Creek in the west, a distance of about 17 miles in breadth. The 15 councillors who represent the various ridings were unanimous in their descriptions of the hardships and extreme destitution caused through the absence of water.

Where Have All the Grannies Gone?

Where have all the grannies gone, long

time ago, They’ve gone to the Bowling Club, and we the Grandchildren have a tale of woe Once Granny would visit us twice a

week, But now it seems, she’s too busy on the phone to speak,

She is a Selector, and must always be there, otherwise the members would

think she didn’t care. Granny’s a skipper of some renown, She has even won the singles crown My Granny wears the whitest clothes, Without frills and without a lot of tissy

bows. Her dress is long, her shoes look big,

But I’m told it is the correct rig. Sometimes her pockets bulge with chalk

duster and a measure, You’d think they were in fact her most

precious treasure. Her hat sits firmly on her head,

To be without it, she’d rather be dead. The bowls are big and very heavy too,

If they dropped on my toe, it would soon be blue.

I miss my Gran telling tales and playing games,

It seems I must wait and hope and pray it rains, then she will come and visit us. Perhaps we’ll even go for a ride on a

bus, Maybe to the films, the theatre or

football we’ll go. I feel quite embarrassed when Gran

shouts “Have a go” It’s winter time at last and Gran will call, Her cheery voice can be heard all down

the hall. She always brings something special,

like sweets or biscuits, All wrapped in odd shapes, and sizes just

to trick us. She often stays overnight at this time, But ask her in the summer and it’s

considered a crime, I guess I just have to put up with Gran

on the run, Suppose she’s like me, entitled to have

what she calls fun.

Round 8

This week saw Mincha West head out to Yarrawalla to battle it out for the day. Mincha West men lead by Scott Mann came out 5 games on top of Yarrawalla, while the Yarrawalla ladies were too strong for Mincha West. The mixed was a close tussle and Yarrawalla ended up winning the day by 30 games. In the juniors both teams tried their hardest showing off their skills with Yarrawalla winning the day by 22 games. Despite the abundance of flies, a good day was had by all. A few kilometres down the road, Calivil North continued their dominance of the competition, defeating Sylvaterre by heaps! No report from Calivil North – so enough said! Lake Charm notched up their second win of the season with some Juniors playing Seniors and stepping up to the challenge. Charm had wins in each section with the men winning all their sets. Best for Charm were Nathan and Jordan. Best for Kerang were Ryan and Sue. A great day of tennis was enjoyed by all, with the courts playing very well. Lake Charm 111 defeated Kerang 83

60 & Over: A tough draw for the boys this week! The team, made up of Les, Ernie, Andy and Allan, competed well but were unable to worry the score board. Better luck next week, chaps! Saturday Pennant: A day of misfortunes!! Division 2 played away visiting Cohuna on some very slippery greens which took some adjusting to. They were unfortunate to fall short by one shot after 75 ends of bowling (68-69). Bother!! Ian (Skip), Brian, Graham, & Peter went down 19 – 25 Lionel (Skip), Marie S., Andy & Terry lost 23 – 31 Beau, Glen, Helen & Allan were the strong-hold winners 26 – 13. Well done, team Beau! Overall, justice does not appear to have been done when you only score two points after coming so close. If only……???? Division 3 reversed the ledger winning by 2 shots (78 – 76). They fronted up to Gunbower and managed to win two rinks to produce a nail-biting, stunning victory. Kate ( Skip), John, Andrew & Gladys had a handy win which was enough to steer the team to the winning line 34 – 22 Les (Skip), Nola, Alan & Bill fell the right side of the ledger winning 25 – 24. Phew!! Ernie (Skip), Jan, Jean & Bev lost 19-30 Sweet is the taste of victory! So close, so good!!!

Sunday Triples Any Combination

Tournament: Congratulations to Jan & Lionel and their teams of workers in organizing this great tournament which was supported by 16 teams. Both Lionel and Jan do a lot of scouting around to recruit teams and engage sponsorship. The prizes were magnificent with Charlie Hocking donating succulent looking pork, and Moama Bowling Club and Bendigo Jack High offering cash sponsorship. Thanks to these people for their generosity! Winners on the day were our own local group – Glenys, Allan & Bill who managed two wins and a draw. Great stuff! Runner-up was the Cohuna Golf team skippered by Peter Bibby.

Players also had an opportunity to win some great raffle prizes generously donated by Bunnings, Murray Downs Golf & Country, Pyramid Hill Newsagency, Coffee Bank, Allan & Robyn Fidler, Jan and Charlie. The bbq which followed the day’s play was well supported and much appreciated. Thanks to all who provided salads and afternoon tea and thanks to the working teams who served the meals and assisted with other menial tasks throughout the day. A special mention to the green keepers for the preparation of the greens. Players were impressed with the surface and the surrounds. (Allan has his Christmas meats sorted since he was also a member of the successful Monday Night competition where he won a ham. Now all he needs is to win a chook in the 60+! Also celebrating the Christmas hams were Lionel, Andy & Neil. A very timely win just before Christmas!) Mid–week Pennant Division 1 travelled to Kerang Golf while Division 2 hosted Cohuna Golf at home. Both teams managed to score 5 Premiership points and performed really well placing some strategic bowls and thoroughly outdoing the opposition. Well… actually, the only strategically placed bowls happened as the bowls were loaded into the cars, and we only outdid the opposition by my mental processing. The rain fell and, because of the wonderful rules that must be adhered to, the matches could not be declared cancelled until the teams had arrived and by which time the green keepers could declare the greens closed and not fit for play. Somewhere there is common sense but it has not quite attached itself to the rules of bowls for Mid-week Pennant.

The next round of Mid-week Pennant

on Dec 11th is the last round before the

Christmas break. Division 1 will host

Barham Services and Division 2 will

travel to Barham Sports

Other News:

Ladies Cub Singles: Best wishes to both Jan and Kate who are the final two players left standing (sort of!) in our Ladies Club Singles Comp. The winner is due to contest at Association level on Monday here at our own Club. If you want to see some good bowling, come along and support our representa-tive.

Championship Pairs: Best wishes to Jan & Marie S., who are part way through the semi-final of the Association Pairs competition. They won their first encounter against Kerang Golf opponents and were having a tussle against Barham Sports folk when play was postponed due to the intense heat. They will endeavour to complete the match on Friday, weather permitting. By that time we should have been blessed with the rains, endured the cold snap and be heading back to finer weather. Christmas Dinner: Next Friday evening, 13th Dec is our Christmas function. Please indicate your intention to attend by recording your name at the Clubrooms. Santa will be attending so you are asked to bring a gift to the value of $10. For further details, see the next edition of this paper or check on the notice board at the Clubrooms. It is a 6:30 for 7:00 start. Communication: A copy of the agenda and recorded minutes of this week’s Board Meeting are available at the Clubrooms.

The scheme suffered a check when the building, being transported by sledge, was tipped into the nearby irrigation channel! However the wreck was dismantled and rebuilt on the church site. Meanwhile, the cause at Wood-lands declined and the church closed in 1914 when the congregation transferred to Yarrawalla. A third church building was erected at Yarrawalla in 1920 with the addition of a vestry in 1925, and this building later served as the Sunday School, which although still standing is now disused. The church was opened on March 7th, with special services and a Tea meeting and Concert on the following Wednes-day. The Tea meetings and Concerts were a highlight for the surrounding districts for many years, with the plan first making mention of them in 1911.The present church building was opened on 18th August 1957. At this time there still remained several Trustees of the land where Woodlands church had been. They decided to sell the land and the proceeds provided the unique memorial window in the porch at Yarrawalla, which commemorates those who worshipped in the Wood-lands Church. Many people have given devoted service in numerous ways over the years. The Lord has called several into full-time service, including Miss E Smith (1919) to Fiji; into ordained ministry Rev. G R Neilson (Woodlands) (1897), Rev. K Stephens (1954) , Rev. L Bradfield (1956), Rev. Neil Vincent (1969) and the Rev. Ron Peacock (1983). Pastor L C Miles was called to Home Missions in 1952 and Pastor Howard James was ordained in 1994. Over the years, many people have contributed to our local services, but accredited Local Preachers were Hedley Miles, Doug Miles, Rus Smith, Nettie James and Glen Miles. We give thanks for those who have been a witness to God’s love in the Yarrawalla and surrounding districts during the time of the Yarrawalla Methodist and Uniting Church and pray that God continues to direct and use us as witnesses to His name.

More Than a Century of More Than a Century of More Than a Century of More Than a Century of

Christian Witness in YarrawallaChristian Witness in YarrawallaChristian Witness in YarrawallaChristian Witness in Yarrawalla

Methodism began in this area in 1875, when Home Missionary, Henry Clarkson was stationed at Durham Ox. The two churches from which Yarra-walla derives its spiritual ancestry then commenced. Yarrawalla’s first church building was erected at a cost of $250 in October 1875, and the 1879 records show 35 people including 12 members attending worship. Also in 1875, a church began at Woodlands - in the Central Mologa area, and the 1879 records show an attendance of 45 including 11 members. When in 1898, due to population movement, membership at Yarrawalla had declined to one, William Hercus Jr. transferred to Woodlands which was then the centre of active church life. Yarrawalla remained closed for seven years, and during this period, as no trustees remained locally, the superin-tendent minister sold the church building to Loddon Vale trustees for 1/-. It continued there as a place of worship for a number of years. In 1905, Yarrawalla recommenced church services. Mr T B Hercus had purchased a disused Bible Christian Church, intending to use it as a barn. Because of the population growth, due to re-settlement of the area, there was an urgent need for a school, and a district meeting decided that if a church was built it could also serve as a school. So Mr Hercus’s purchase eventually became the second church building at Yarrawalla.
