The Word Of God Introduction to our
Sunday Readings
First reading Amos 7:12-15
Two figures clash in this story. One represents a powerful reli-gious institution and the other is called by God to bear his word. The reaction of Amos is full of courage. Second reading Ephesians 1:3-14
Our next reading is really not a reading but a prayer, a very po-etic prayer. The prayer tells the story of all God has done for us in Jesus...as a result, we too are portrayed in the prayer! Gospel Mark 6:7-13
As Jesus shares his vocation with the Twelve, why does he give such surprisingly detailed instruc-tions about what to bring and what to wear? Could it be that the followers (and their leaders!) are meant to resemble the mas-ter?
“DO NOT BE AFRAID TO BE HOLY”. It is a kind of shame for the church when we have to canonise Popes. They should be re-
ally holy people for such a holy task and office. Of course, we should say the same about all. As baptised people, we should be holy as we share the life of the Lord Jesus. Holiness is our vocation. Holiness is the most attractive face of believers.
Sixty years ago, as Vatican II spoke of the church, it included a chapter entitled, “The call
to holiness”. Some commentators would suggest this is the most important chapter of the
Council as it tells us that every member has this call and this equality. The real celebrities
of faith are the holy people, not the people with big jobs or big hats.
Recently, Pope Francis has given the church a letter on the same, called “Rejoice and be Glad”. He reminds us that our ordinary loving lives are holy, whatever the situation we live in. Quoting Vatican II, he tells us “all the faithful are called by the Lord to perfect holiness”. (7) God’s plan is Christ, in whom we live.
That holiness comes in all kinds of situations and people.
Pope Francis mentions many examples, especially he names “the genius of women in feminine styles of holiness…I think of all known and unknown women”. (12) We should be looking at
the saints in our mothers and grandmothers, in our sisters and next-door neighbours.
“Do not be afraid of holiness” he tells us. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy. On the contrary, you will become what the Father had in mind when he created you, making you more alive, more human, more faithful to your deepest self.
“And me too”. Don’t leave this mission and race to oth-ers. Take the invitation as to you.

The 2018 Croagh Patrick National Pilgrim-age will take place on Sunday 29th July.
Masses will be celebrated from 8.00am to 2.00pm every half hour in the old church on the top of Croagh Patrick, the Holy Mountain.
Pilgrims can make their confession on the summit continuously from 7.30am to 2.30pm.
There are three pilgrimage stations on the way to the summit of Croagh Patrick:
Pilgrims must be prepared and remember this is a very challenging ascent, they must be properly
dressed, have proper footwear and walking sticks and bring snacks and drinks.
Also they must be responsible for themselves and other people and remember the ascent is a climbing
of the Holy Mountain too.
The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of themselves, the most personal gifts that God has placed in their hearts, rather than hopelessly trying to imitate something not meant for them.’ Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate, 11
SPITFIRE IN
DUNDRUM
Over the last 3 years, parishioner Gerry Hand has built an amazing life size cockpit of a SPITFIRE Mark 9 in his garden shed.
Gerry has kindly donat-ed the life size model to the Irish Veterans Asso-ciation, Kinsale, Co. Cork who conduct Historical Research into the involvement of Irish men and women who served in foreign military and ancillary forces. They hope to put his work on display at an exhibition in Cork Airport
A NEW ICON FOR HOLY CROSS CHURCH — BLESSED DOM COLUMBA MARMION
Iconographer Mihai Cucu (Who wrote the Icon for the WMOF) has been commissioned to write a ICON of Blessed Dom Marmion who served as a curate in Holy Cross, Dundrum from 1881-1882.
During the month of September we will focus on the Life and Spirituality of Dom Marmion and his connection to Dundrum.
The New Icon will be a significant commission of spiritual religious art and I hope it will deepen our devotion to Dom Marmion.
I have invited Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to cele-brate Mass and to anoint the new icon before Blessed Marmion’s feast day on 3rd October. (JB)

‘Messiah’ is one of many titles given to Jesus in New Testa-ment writings. ‘Christ’ is some-times mistakenly thought to be a family name for Jesus. It is, in fact, a significant title that Jesus used to identify himself, and it tells us who the first Christians thought Jesus was. In Jewish history, Mes-siah was a title preserved for the one who would be the ide-al leader of the Israelites. The Jews believed God would send them a messiah to lead Israel to national greatness.
The Hebrew title Messiah pointed to ‘the anointed one’ as the one chosen by God. Be-cause the Israelites thought their ideal ruler would be a king, they asked the Judge, Samuel, to find a king ‘to govern us’. Samuel prayed to the Lord and the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Listen to their voice and set a king over them’ (1 Sm. 8:22). Samuel chose Saul to be the first Israelite king. He took a vial of oil and poured it on Saul’s head, saying, ‘The Lord has anointed you to rule over his people Israel. You will save them from the hand of their enemies all around them.’ (1 Sm. 10:1)
How was the title Messiah for Jesus preserved and handed on to Christians in the decades after Jesus death-resurrection? First, they were handed on through the preaching of the apostles and disciples. The community proclaimed Jesus ‘the Christ’ shortly af-ter his death-resurrection. Later, other titles were added through preaching and church prayers, including hymns.
