DDE Client Communications CIMPLICITY® DDE Client Communications provides the ability to integrate third party DDE I/O Servers with CIMPLICITY HMI for data acquisition. The DDE Client supports both standard DDE (CF_TEXT format) and AdvancedDDE™. AdvancedDDE provides significantly higher throughput than standard DDE. With this capability, CIMPLICITY HMI expands its reach to dozens of additional manufacturing devices through standard and AdvancedDDE I/O Servers from device manufacturers and third party software suppliers.

MMI products have always relied on third parties to develop drivers for the wide variety of proprietary communications protocols that exist. Approximately 80% of all available MMI I/O communications drivers are supplied by third parties. AdvancedDDE is he choice of many developers because it is an open standard supported by other packaged software applications.

The CIMPLICITY DDE Client communicates to DDE I/O Servers using the standard Application, Topic, and Item conventions for DDE. The Application and Topic are specified as part of CIMPLCICITY Device configuration and the Item is specified as the Address for the point in CIMPLICITY Point configuration. AdvancedDDE is a trademark of Rockwell Software, Inc.

Descartes Systems OmniServer™ OmniServer is a tool for developing communications protocols to a broad variety of I/O devices. Protocols are developed without any programming simply by specifying the protocol details. OmniServer interfaces to CIMPLICITY HMI via AdvancedDDE™ to provide high data throughput. OmniServer Developer with Protocol Editor is used to create custom protocols. The protocol editor creates a protocol definition file which can be used with either OmniServer Developer or OmniServer Run-time products to communicate with devices. Once protocols are developed with OmniServer Developer, the protocol definition file can be transferred to a system with OmniServer Run-time for communications from that system. OmniServer provides these great features: Polling and Unsolicited Messaging – OmniServer can be set up to listen for, and reply to, unsolicited messages from a device. OmniServer can also issue requests to a device and process the responses on a periodic basis (polled) or on command (triggered) from CIMPLICITY HMI. Both polled and unsolicited messaging can be supported in the same protocol. Read and Write Access OmniServer will read data from the device and pass it on to CIMPLICITY HMI. OmniServer also accepts setpoints from CIMPLICITY and writes them to the device. Point to point and Multi-drop configurations OmniServer protocols can support multiple devices on a single port. Each device is simply configured as a separate DDE topic. Built in error detection algorithms OmniServer includes a variety of error detection schemes including checksums, CRCs, and LRCs. Select any of the available calculations to

use in your messages as required without any programming. ASCII or Binary protocols OmniServer recognizes both ASCII and binary-based protocols. Comprehensive Data types OmniServer supports integer and real numbers as well as discrete (Boolean) values and character strings. Many data formats can be specified in the protocol including decimal, hexadecimal, binary-coded decimal, and IEEE floating point format. Data Integrity OmniServer supports a communications status flag for each DDE topic. The status flag can be monitored by an HMI application to alert users in case of a communications failure. DDE and AdvancedDDE Support OmniServer supports AdvancedDDE to provide fast communications between the DDE Server and the CIMPLICITY Communications Client. OmniServer data can also be viewed in Excel and other Windows® applications that provide access to DDE data. Serial port and TCP/IP connections OmniServer can be used over standard serial ports or with Winsock TCP/IP networks. OmniServer can also be used with multi-port cards such as DigiBoard. Up to 16 serial ports can be used. OmniServer is ideal for developing the simple protocols required by Bar Code Readers, Loop Controllers, Scales, Relays and many other I/O devices. Once your protocol has been developed, OmniServer runs as an AdvancedDDE™ Server and integrates with CIMPLICITY HMI via DDE Client Communications which is included as a standard feature of CIMPLICITY HMI Server. OmniServer is available for Windows 95 and Windows NT® (Intel) platforms.

CIMPLICITY® Marquee Interface The CIMPLICITY Marquee Interface is a powerful and flexible tool that allows you to broadcast important production information to factory personnel on most marquee devices. With the Marquee driver you can display production data, alarm information, and informational messages. The Marquee Driver can display a set of messages. It will cycle through a queue of messages, displaying each message for a configured period. The messages for the marquee display are generated from alarm messages. The alarms may originate from points or from an alarm generated with CIMPLICITY Visual Basic extensions to the Basic Control Engine or with the Alarm Management API. The Marquee Driver configuration interface allows you to set up the serial interface to meet the requirements of the display device. Escape sequences and control characters can be configured to precede and/or follow each message. Control characters can be embedded in the messages that are displayed as well.

Supported Devices Most Marquees The Marquee Driver has been tested with Uticor and Total Control Product Marquees.

OPC Client Communications CIMPLICITY® OPC Client Communications provides the ability to integrate third party OPC I/O Servers with CIMPLICITY HMI for data acquisition. OPC is a new standard that builds on the success and strength of Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 95, and OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) technology. The design of OPC was begun in 1995, targeted at providing a standard for interoperability among control applications, field systems and devices, and business and office applications. OPC is endorsed by Microsoft and the OPC Foundation which developed the technical specification and which now includes over 140 members with broad representation from the process control industry including GE Fanuc Automation.

OPC defines a single common interface for both C++ and Visual Basic programs that is based on Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM) and the Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) to provide a common. Through this interface, software as diverse as Microsoft BackOffice, Human Machine Interfaces, and custom Visual Basic applications will all access process data with the same access methods.

OPC promises lower costs and increased productivity for end-users, systems integrators, and process control vendors alike by focusing communications issues on a single technology and strategy.

OPC’s benefits to the end user are:

• = Cost savings in application integration by providing a simple plug and play interface for multiple vendors

• = Communications technology that is superior to DDE. Although widely used, DDE is well known to be slow and unreliable.

• = Freedom to select vendors who provide the best of class solution rather than being captive to a single vendor with a proprietary product.
