Fantasy Phonics Word Lists
Have you become the Games Master? Need a quick reference for words to use in the game? Want them to fit in with your child’s school’s phonics programme? Have no fear! Here are two comprehensive lists of words to use at all stages to fit in with either the Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs or Phonic Books teaching order. All the high frequency words are included as well as some interesting additions! If your child’s school doesn’t use either of these programmes, don’t worry – just check with your child’s teacher which word list fits in with the school’s teaching order so that you can choose the right words. Also included is a sample sentence for the Boss Fight at each level. A few notes …
• If your child isn’t sure what a word means then use this as an opportunity to teach them by talking about it – say what it means, show how it might be used in a sentence by saying an example or say another word that means the same thing.
• Note that words with an asterisk * are pronounced differently in different parts of the world! Just think about how you say
the word and then, if necessary, move the word to the right place. This is particularly the case for words like bath that have
an /a/ sound in some parts of the world and /ar/ in other parts. Another example is the word look. I say it with an /u/
sound in the middle but if I lived 20 miles up the road, I would say it with an /oo/ sound in the middle! Always work with
your and your child’s local accent and the way you speak.
• In the list some words are described by how they are put together. V = vowel and C = consonant, so a VC word such as it is
made up of a vowel and a consonant. Putting two consonant sounds together in a CCVC word such as slip is, at first, quite
tricky for children. Encourage them to blend the sounds – that is, say the sounds and push them together without a space
in between each sound, like this: slip “s>l>i>p”.
Above all, have lots of fun!
