Hi and welcome to the first edition of the Fantasy Freakos pre-season rave for 2012. Another fantasy season is upon us and the excitement levels are ashigh as theyve ever been. It promises to be another bumper year, with the AFLs newest team Greater Western Sydney making its debut in the competition. There have been subtle changes to AFL Dream Team for 2012, with squad sizes reduced back to 30, but those dreaded byes have been retained in someform, ensuring that team strategies once again come into play.

With not every NAB Cup match televised this year the pre-season competition takes on a greater significance. You can follow me on twitter and getexclusive updates from every match played, even those at remote venues like Mandurah and Victor Harbour.

Also lookout for Freakos radar each week where Ill highlight which players you need to track. These can easily be identified by the radar symbol next tothe players name. Enjoy this weeks read and good luck with selecting your squad.

In previous years picking your ruckman was perhaps one of the easiest tasks for a fantasy coach. Pencil in Dean Cox and Aaron Sandilands and then fillyour two bench spots with anyone. The landscape has now changed. This season more than ever before there are more options in the ruck, with up to eightplayers now worthy of a starting berth. In 2011 we saw the introduction of the new interchange rule and this had a massive impact on team structures andthe ground time of players, especially ruckman. The majority of teams went in with two genuine big men, but then there were those that used a utility toprovide relief, with Sydney one such example with Shane Mumford and Jesse White/Lewis Roberts-Thomson.

Below I have identified the likely ruck combinations heading into Round 1, and highlighted those I believe are viable options this year. I have identified SamJacobs and Ben McEvoy as the premium ruck combo, based on last years output and their potential for further improvement this season. Consideringtheyre the only recognised ruckman on their list, they will also get plenty of game time as well.

Looking at the remaining group, Dean Cox is still a good option this year despite sharing the ruck duties with Nic Naitanui. He returned to form last seasonand his opening NAB Cup match suggests that he wont be slowing down anytime soon. If youre after a cheaper alternative, then Mark Jamar really standsout especially now that both Max Gawn and Jake Spencer have been placed on the long-term injury list.

    RUCKS WIDE OPEN

A formula has been used to determine aplayers approximate score for Round 1,taking into account his average DT points perminute and then multiplying this by 100 toproduce a DT points per 100 minutes value.Throughout the entire NAB Cup we will usethis approach. Richmonds Matthew Arnotranked No.1 across the competition (average

of 257) but we cant read too much into that.He only played seven minutes and finishedwith one disposal and four tackles. For thepurpose of this exercise, it was MatthewBoyd that led the way with an average of 191.

This highlights the valueplayers of the NAB Cupdividing the price by theDT points per 100 minutesaverage. The lower the figure, the better value they are.

match, reaching or exceeding that mark in half of his games. Thompsonalso ranked sixth in the league for DT points scored and had some hugegames, returning 120 plus points on eight occasions.

    SCOTT THOMPSON JASON PORPLYZIA

Despite his tempting price, Porplyzia remains a risky pick this year.Entering his seventh season in the AFL, his durability has been amassive concern, playing 20 or more games only once. Hes never beena huge ball-winner either, topping the 20 disposal mark in 12 of his 83

games averaging 69 DT points per match. Hes already suffered asetback in the form of a calf injury, which all but rules him out as far asIm concerned.

    BRISBANE LIONS

For the first time in almost a decade, Brown enjoyed an injury freepre-season and was raring to go, but that was until he suffered anotherserious knock to the head at training today. After copping two devastatingblows to the head last year, the last thing the Lions wanted was for theirskipper to go down again with another head injury. You have to cross himoff your list now despite his tempting price.

    JONATHAN BROWN TOM ROCKLIFF

If you want Rockliff this year, you have to pay top dollar for him, andrightly so. Hes the fourth-most expensive midfielder in the competitionand is only $500 cheaper than the great man Gary Ablett. Hes worthevery cent if you ask me, with his ball-winning ability almost rivalling thatof Dane Swan. In fact, if we look at the second half of last year, he rankedsecond to the latter for points scored between Rounds 13-24 averaging121 DT points per game.

    CARLTON

After being a lock in almost every team last year as a DPP, it seemscoaches have jumped off the Gibbs bandwagon now that hes only amidfielder. Since debuting in 2007, hes played in 109 out of 110 pos-sible games and averaged 91 DT points per match including an equal-

career-high 106 last year. He ranks fifth in the league for points scoredacross the past three seasons behind Dane Swan, Matthew Boyd, ScottPendlebury and Leigh Montagna. Solid numbers if you ask me.

    BRYCE GIBBS PAUL BOWER

Forgotten defender Bower looks to have shrugged injuries aside andcould play a key role in defence this year. Regaining his spot in the teamlooms as the only challenge, with both Nick Duigan and Jeremy Laidlerimpressing in their first season at the club in 2011. Defensive coach

Gavin Brown has been impressed with his training and attitude overthe summer, and considering his low price, hes definitely one worthconsidering.

Beams DPP status this year is a massive bonus. You may not want topick him as a midfielder, but as a forward he looks good value despitehis price tag. His finish to last year was exceptional, ranking third in thecompetition for points scored from Round 19 onwards behind Dane

Swan and Nathan van Berlo, averaging 120 DT points per game. Notonly did he find plenty of the ball, averaging 29 disposals per game, healso impacted the scoreboard, averaging two goals per match.

    DAYNE BEAMS MARTY CLARKE

Clarke looms as the likely replacement for the departed Leon Davisacross half-back, and with Ben Johnson now injured also, hes all butassured of a Round 1 start. In his previous stint at the club between2007-09 he was a consistent ball-winner, averaging 17 disposals and

70 DT points per match reaching or exceeding that mark in 24 of his41 matches. He missed the first round NAB Cup with a sof t tissue injury, but hes expected to feature in the coming weeks.

With Brent Prismall and Scott Gumbleton both placed on Essendonslong-term injury list, the Bombers are in a position to upgrade two rook-ies. Mature-age recruit DellOlio will be staking his claims in the comingweeks, and after his Round 1 NAB Cup display, hell surely come into cal-

    CORY DELLOLIO DYSON HEPPELL

History suggests that coaches are reluctant to splash out for secondyear players, making Heppell an unlikely star ter this season. Nathan Fyfeis just one example of why backing them in could be worthwhile, withthe young Docker averaging 30 more points per game in his second

The early signs for Barlow arent good. He comes into this year wayunder the odds based on his scoring potential, but I wouldnt goanywhere near him until he can prove that hes fully recovered fromhis broken leg. Hes recently been grounded with leg soreness and is

expected to miss up to three weeks, making him a doubtful starter forRound 1. At best Barlow is a mid-season trade up target.

    MICHAEL BARLOW LACHIE NEALE

Ross Lyon has been public with his praise for Neale, and its no surpriseafter his eye-catching performance against Essendon in the NAB Cup,finishing with six disposals, two tackles and a game-high two goals. Heplayed across three levels in the SANFL last year and averaged 88 points

per game across all competitions racking up 40 disposals in one ofhis Under-18 matches. Neale looms as an early season bolter and isdefinitely in the mix to make his AFL debut in Round 1.

Although he didnt find as much of the ball as in 2010, Selwood stillwent on to average a career-high 109 DT points per match last year ranked eighth in the AFL. If we exclude his Round 1 score of 27 whenhe was subbed out with concussion, his average would have been 114 ranking him fourth behind Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and MatthewBoyd. You could build your midfield around the newly appointed skipper.Expect him to get even better this year.

    JOEL SELWOOD BILLIE SMEDTS

After failing to play at any level last year season through injury, theresplenty of excitement over Smedts. Chris Scott has hosed down the hypeby declaring that hes a long way off from commanding a place in Gee-longs best 22 which is no surprise really. We should see him debut thisyear, so hopefully its as early as Round 1. Smedts is a versatile playercapable of playing at either end of the ground, and has been positionedaccordingly as a def-fwd.

Franklin was unleashed into the midfield in a recent intra-club game andhe continued in that role in Hawthorns opening NAB Cup match, beforereturning to the forward line for the second. He did as he pleased inboth games and is set for a massive year. As the third-most expensive

If Hartletts body can hold up this year, he could be a jet! Thats a big ifthough. Hes featured in fewer than half of Port Adelaides games sincedebuting in 2008, averaging 19 disposals and 79 DT points per matchwhich isnt a bad return. Prior to his season-ending injury in Round 20

The Tigers have got themselves a gem in Ellis. Despite being a recentdraftee, the playmaking defender has the body to step straight into seniorfootball and have an impact. He averaged 23 disposals per game forCalder Cannons in the TAC Cup last year and also averaged the second-

most disposals of any defender at the junior carnival. Last year we sawReece Conca and Jake Batchelor play 17 and 16 games respectively, and I expect a similar return from Ellis in 2012.

    BRANDON ELLIS BRETT DELEDIO

Having missed only three games since debuting in 2005, Deledio willgo into Round 1 underdone after suffering a hamstring injury during anintra-club match. The club expects him to feature at some stage duringthe pre-season, but if he doesnt were facing a quandary. Hes always

been one of my first players picked, but theres always the chance ofre-aggravation with soft tissue injuries. Deledio has been a solid scoreracross the past four seasons, averaging 25 disposals, five marks and94 DT points per match.

Saad will be competing with fellow mature-age recruit Terry Milera fora starting berth in Round 1. I doubt that Scott Watters would play themboth, so at this stage its one or the other. Saad played both games inthe opening round of the NAB Cup, but it was in the first he had a greater

impact, finishing with three disposals, three tackles and one goal. I expecthis scores to be somewhat erratic early on, but he should still increase inprice regardless.

    AHMED SAAD NICK RIEWOLDT

To pick or not to pick Riewoldt has been one of the most debatedquestions this pre-season. His starting price suggests that its a nobrainer, but the coaches comments make me think otherwise. ScottWatters has declared that he intends to diversify the forward line, and

that the days of the focal point are gone, so reading between the lines itdoesnt sound promising. With a wealth of DPPs to choose from, optingfor one of them over the spearhead looks to be the way to go.

You can safely put a line through Mitchell for Round 1. He wont featureduring the NAB Cup and John Longmire has already stated that he wontbe rushing his prized recruit. Hes had a restricted pre-season with ashoulder problem and knee tendonitis, but Longmire does expect him to

    WESTERN BULLDOGS

I cannot recall a player suffering as big a drop than Lake last year. In 2010he was the highest scoring key-position player in the game, ranking 14thoverall for DT points scored at an average of 99 per match. He never fullyrecovered from hip and should surgery last pre-season and his numbersbacked that up averaging 48 fewer points per game than the previousyear. If he proves his fitness, Lakes a steal at his price.

    BRIAN LAKE RYAN HARGRAVE

After playing 123 of a possible 132 games between 2005-10, injurieshit Hargrave last year, managing a career-low five games. Once apremium defender, his output was well down on the previous year, aver-aging 16 fewer DT points per match with his average of 58 points hislowest since 2006. Hargrave really stands out at his price and I wouldnthesitate in picking him in my star ting squad.
