WHAT IS SYSTEM RESISTANCE?

Any system connected to a fan demands a certain pressure for a given flow rate of

gases. This is called system resistance.

FantekYes all kinds of industrial fans (axial and centrifugal) can be retrofitted; however only

fans that are sufficiently large will justify the investment cost to retrofit. As a thumb rule,

fans with impeller diameter more than 1.5m would possibly be worthwhile to retrofit.

HOW DO I ACHIVE ENERGY SAVINGS FOR SMALLER FANS?

Smaller fans can be studied and replaced in totality.

CAN FANTEK HANDLE ALL KINDS OF RETROFIT?Fantek can do all kinds of retrofits for industrial fans except variable pitch axial fans.

FAN RETROFITFan Retrofit is a profitable exercise for companies and can have a great impact on the

company's productivity, profit margins and safety. We at Fantek take utmost care to

ensure that our customers are benefited to the maximum extent possible and also

suggest changes that have the least payback period and maximum benefit.

WHY STUDY A FAN?Energy savings is one of the main reasons for studying a fan. If the fan is not selected appropriately, huge losses in power are possible.

MY FAN IS A NEW FAN DO I STILL NEED TO STUDY IT?

Yes. Studying the fan will reveal facts about the system and tell you if you have bought

the correct fan for your system and if there is scope to reduce power consumption.

CAN ALL FANS BE RETROFITTED?

DOES SYSTEM RESISTANCE CHANGE?

Modifications made in the plant or other kinds of changes (variation from design

temperature, dust loading, density, blockages etc.) can vary the system resistance.

WHAT IS FAN EFFICIENCY?Fan efficiency is the ratio of useful fluid power (output/workdone by the fan per unit time)to the power input to the fan. If fan efficiency is low, lot of energy is getting wasted andvice versa.

WHAT IS BEST EFFICIENCY POINT?Fans have maximum efficiency only when they deliver a particular flow and pressure and this combination of flow and pressure is called best efficiency point. At all points other than the best efficiency point, efficiency of the fan is lower.

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SYSTEM RESISTANCE AND FAN EFFICIENCY?If the system resistance (system pressure) is not matching with the pressure at the best efficiency point, the fan will not deliver its best efficiency.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF RETROFIT?Retrofit is the concept of changing one or more parts of the equipment by making designmodifications to result in an enhanced performance in terms of reduced maintenance expenses and/or greater productivity.

CAN I ACHIEVE A BETTER FAN EFFICIENCY BY CHANGING THE SYSTEM RESISTANCE?Yes the best fan efficiency can be obtained when system resistance is changed (increased/decreased). However, one should consider/recognize the fact that fans should deliver the required system pressure and not vice/versa. Changing the system

resistance/ pressure to get a better fan efficiency is incorrect, unless change in system resistance results in better process/output or reduced power consumption.

HOW DO I ACHIEVE BETTER FAN EFFICIENCY IF I CANNOT ALTER THE SYSTEM RESISTANCE?Better fan efficiency can be obtained by studying the system for fluid parameters and either replacing the fan with a new fan which is selected to suit the system or by doinga retrofit.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS TO RETROFIT FANS?

Fans are retrofitted for getting one or more benefits. For instance mechanically superior

designs can result in reduced maintenance downtime and a longer availability of plant

for production. Design changes can result in power savings or a higher output of the fan

for the same power and also reduction of noise pollution.

WHAT ARE THE KEY WAYS OF RETROFITTING FANS?

Ÿ Replacement of rotor and inlet cone for reduced power or enhanced flow and pressure

for the same power.

Ÿ Modification of the casing, inlet boxes and other fan parts like dampers and silencers

for better efficiency and performance.

Ÿ Changing the bearings for more life and lesser maintenance.

Ÿ Changing the material of construction of the rotor or other parts of the fan to result in

superior wear life in combination with design changes.

Ÿ Other design modifications for lesser noise and power consumption.
