Copyright ©2010 The Church at Brook Hills www.brookhills.org 1 Family Worship Guide – Week 8 READ o Leviticus 23:26‐32 o In the Old Testament, God made a way for sin to be forgiven by setting aside a day every year to fast and focus solely on seeking forgiveness from God for all sin. This day was known as the Day of Atonement. Through sacrificial rituals that pictured the transfer and removal of sin away from the people, the people of God witnessed God’s amazing grace and mercy. These sacrifices pointed forward and were made effective by the coming sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross. There, Christ fully atoned for our sins through His substitutionary death. By His intercession, He turned away the wrath of God and became sin for us. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The Bottom Line: God is holy and has provided a way for us to be holy and pure before Him through His son Jesus Christ. Questions: Does God forgive us of all sin? Can we truly be holy? How does Jesus fulfill the Old Testament sacrifices? What is our response to God’s amazing acts of mercy and grace in Christ? PRAY o Read Window on the World, Pg. 22‐23 Bangladesh o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “Amazing Grace” o In the late 1700’s, an Englishman named John Newton wrote the original hymn, “Amazing Grace”. Newton was raised by his mother who brought him up memorizing the catechism and hymns. After his mother’s death, Newton continued school away from home and later went to sea with his father who was a sea captain. Newton then went on to serve in the British Navy where he would be abandoned, imprisoned and publicly flogged. From there, Newton went on to embrace the life of a slave ship owner, and as his heart grew cold to religion, he became a slave to his own sinful desires. His life became a demolition of drunkenness, lust and violence. However, at twenty‐three, a violent storm threatened Newton’s life while he was at sea. It was the Lord’s will to save John Newton and to display His amazing grace in the life of this hopeless, wretched sinner. God used this encounter to awaken Newton’s heart to the seriousness of his life and the sinfulness of his heart. John Newton, by the grace of God, put his faith in Christ, left the slave trade to become a pastor, and went on to write one of the most world‐renowned songs that is still sung today. As we read in Leviticus about the Day of Atonement and we see such a vivid picture of the seriousness of God’s holiness, let us praise the Lord Jesus for what He has accomplished on the cross and for how He has shown us such sweet grace throughout all of history. MEMORIZE o Leviticus 11:44a For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy.
