o Ruth1:1‐6,19‐22o AfterfinallyconqueringthePromisedLand,thebookofJudgesrevealsthepeopleofIsraeldidnotheedtheprevious
warningsofMosesandJoshua,butrebelledagainstGod’sruleandturnedtoserveothergods.ThestoryofRuthtookplaceduringthistimeperiod,andweseehowGodrightlyjudgedHispeoplewithafamineintheland(1:1).Elimelech,Naomiandtheirsonsrespondedbyleavingtheland(BethleheminJudah)andjourneyingtoMoab(thewickedenemiesofIsrael).HerethesonsmarriedMoabitewomen(RuthandOrpah).WhenNaomi’shusband(Elimelech)andsonsdied,shedecidedtoreturntoherhomeinBethlehem,andherdaughter‐in‐law,Ruth,chosetogowithher.
o Ruth2:1‐3,8‐13o AfterarrivinginBethlehemRuthwenttogathergrainintheharvestfieldofamannamedBoazandfoundgreatfavor
inhissight.Verse3saysthatshe“happenedtocometothepartofthefieldbelongingtoBoaz.”ThistextwaswrittenfromRuth’slimitedperspective.Asfarasshewasconcerned,sherandomlypickedaspotinthefield.But,aswewillsee,GodwasprovidentiallyatworkandledhertotheportionofthefieldbelongingtoBoaz.Onceagain,God’ssovereigntywasondisplay‐thesignificanceistobeseenintheversestocome!
o Ruth2:18‐20o WeseeitwasnocoincidencethatRuthcametothepartofthefieldbelongingtoBoaz;insteadGod’ssovereignplan
wasbeingworkedout.InthelawofIsrael,therewasaprinciplecalledthe‘kinsmanredeemer’.Whenawomanwaswidowed,itwastheresponsibilityofthenearestunmarriedmaninherhusband’sfamilytotakeherashisbridesoshewouldnotbecomedestitute.
o Ruth4:7‐17o Ruth,acursedMoabite,wasthegreat‐grandmotherofDavid.HowdidacursedMoabitegetintothelineofthe
Messiah?BecauseGodprovidedforheraredeemer.Boazisapictureofourkinsmanredeemertocome.We,too,weredestitutewhentheLordJesusChristboughtusforHimselfandmadeusHisownbelovedbride.Hebrews9:12says,"Hebroughteternalredemption."Throughthisincrediblestory,weseethekindnessofGodondisplayasHeremainedfaithfultoastubbornandundeservingpeople.HeusedtheleastlikelyrecipientsofHisgracetomaintainthelineofpromise,whichwouldeventuallybringagreatKingandfutureSavior.TheBottomLine:GodlavishesHiskindnessonHispeopleandissovereignlyincontrolofourredemption.

These activities and questions can replace or serve as asupplementtothequestionsunderthe“Read”sectiononPage1.RememberthatthesesuggestionsareintendedtohelpparentsfacilitateGod‐centereddiscussionswiththeirchildren.Parentsshouldprayerfullyusethesesuggestions,andanyothermeansnecessary,tohelptheirchildrendiscoverthetruthsofGod’swordandworshipHimtogether.
Preschool(Birth‐Kindergarten)o Beforeyoubegin:Gathersomepicturesofyourfamilyandofdifferentfamiliesfrommagazines.o Showthepicturesoffamiliestoyourpreschooler.Talktothemabouthowallfamiliesaredifferent.Example:Some
familieswillhavebrothers,sisters,mommies,anddaddies.Othersmayjusthaveamommyanddaddywithonechildormaybeaunts,uncles,orgrandparents.Explainthatfamilieslivetogetherandcareforeachother.Weshowloveforoneanotherbycaringforoneanother.Canyouthinkofsomewaysmommyordaddyshowourlovetoyou?Weprovideyouwiththingsyouneedlikeahome,food,andclothes.
o RuthandNaomiwereafamily,andtheyneededsomeonetocareforthemandprovidethemwithahome,food,andclothing.Theirhusbandshaddied,andtheyneededhelp.Godhadaplanforthem,andHeknewjustwhattheyneeded.Godwasgoodtothem.HesentRuthandNaomitoanewplacecalledBethlehemandtoldBoaztotakecareofthem.BoazdidwhatGodwantedhimtodoandcaredforthem.Hegavethemfoodandahome.HemarriedRuthandbecameherhusband,andtheyhadasonandafamilyoftheirown.
o Weareallpartofabiggerfamily:God’sfamily.GodisourHeavenlyFatherandHelovesandprovidesforus,too.CanyouthinkofsomethingsthatGodprovidesorgivesustoshowHislove?
Children(Grades1‐5)
o AsthestoryofRuthbegins,welearnthatherhusbandhasdied.Sheisaloneandhasnoonetotakecareofher.Notonlythat,butRuthisaMoabite,andsomepeopleconsideredhertobeunderacurse.ButGodwaskindandlovingtoRuth.Hehadanamazing,unstoppableplantosaveherandtospreadthisblessingofsalvationoverthewholeworld.
o RuthmetBoaz,theymarried,andhadasonnamedObed.LaterObedhadason,Jesse.Jessehadason,David.DavidbecamekingofIsrael.BoazandRuth’sson,Obed,wasthegrandfatherofKingDavid!Jesus’earthlyfather,Joseph,wasalsooneofBoazandRuth’sdecendants.RuthwasimportantinJesus’heritage.Shewasagreat‐great‐great‐great‐greatandmoregreats—grandmothertoJesus!GodusedhertofulfilltheprophecyandthepromiseofGodthatJesuswouldbeborninKingDavid’sfamily!

o InRuth1:16‐17,Ruth’sloyaltytoNaomiledhertofollowNaomiwherevershewouldgo.Inchapter2:3,weread,“Soshesetoutandwentandgleanedinthefieldafterthereapers,andshehappenedtocometothepartofthefieldbelongingtoBoaz”.Therearetimeswhendivineappointmentshappenineachofourlives.Wesometimescallthese‘coincidences’,butinrealitytherearenorealcoincidencesinlife.GodisalwaysworkingoutHisintentionalplansinourlivesforHisglory.

o InthissovereignmeetingbetweenBoazandRuth,weseeRuthfoundfavorinBoaz’seyes(2:13).BoazjusthappenedtomeetallthequalificationsnecessarytoredeemRuthandbuyherfreedombackfromslavery.ThisisaclearpictureofwhatChristdidforus.HefreedusfromslaverytosinbypurchasinguswithHisownblood.JesusisourKinsmanRedeemer.
o ThereweresomekeypeopleandmomentsinvolvedinRuth’slifethatledhertomeetherkinsmanredeemer.WhataresomekeymomentsinyourlifethatledtoyoubeingintroducedtoChristandyoursalvation?
