How To Access, Track or Print a BillOn home page of legislative web site (http://legis.wisconsin.gov) go to box under "Find a Proposal:" Enter the number of the Bill you want to access. Click on "Find." On the next page click on the link to the Bill you entered. You may then view the text of the Bill by clicking on "Bill Text" under "Links." For exam-ple, to access Senate Bill 1 in the 2017 Regular Session, type SB 1 in the search box under "Find a Proposal." Click "Find" and then select "2017 Senate Bill 1." Click on "Bill Text" and the bill will be displayed. To print the bill, press CTRL+ P and then "Print."

General Guidelines for Involvement

People can affect the legislative process if they follow procedures and put in the necessary effort. Here are some general guidelines to help you get involved in the legislative process.

1. Find out the names of your state Senator and Representative. Go to http://legis.wisconsin.gov. Go to the search box under "Find My Legislators" next to the green Wisconsin map on the right side of the screen. Enter your address and city. A district map will come up along with a dialog box with your WI State Sen-ator and Assembly Representative. Select "For more information click here" at top of the box. A page will come up that has links to the US House of Repre-sentatives and US Senate. From there you can find contact information for your Congressional Representatives and US Senators, in addition to your WI state legislators. You may also call your local public library, city, or town hall for the names of your legislators and then refer to Wisconsin Family Council’s 2017-2018 Legislative Directory for their contact information.

2. Stay tuned to the legislative process. Get acquainted with legislation by researching the internet, watching newscasts, listening to the radio, reading a newspaper, and by receiving information from Wisconsin Family Council. Note the title, name, or number of legislation on an issue that interests you.

3. Get a copy of the bill. Access the bill online, ask your legislator to send you a copy of the bill or call Wisconsin Family Council at (888) 378-7395. (See How To Access, Track or Print a Bill, above)

4. Study the bill. Look for both negative and positive aspects of the bill and its possible effects on you or a group you represent. Be prepared to clearly explain your views.

5. Call, write, or meet with your legislator about the bill. No matter how you interact with your legislator, always be respectful and courteous. This will increase your ability to reach your legislator in the future.

6. Attend a public hearing on the bill, if one is called. Some local newspa-pers print notices of hearings. The Legislative Hotline (800-362-9472) and the legislative web site (http://legis.wisconsin.gov) have listings of public hearings. If you are going to testify, be sure to come prepared to speak, with copies of your testimony printed and ready to distribute to the committee members. Calling the committee clerk or checking the committee listings in this publication will let you know how many legislators are on the committee.

State Government Resource Recommendations The State Legislature’s web site—www.legis.wisconsin.gov This web site has virtually anything you might want to or need to know about both the Assembly and the Senate, as well as legislation of the current session and previous sessions. It is the portal to the floor sessions, online state statutes, Wisconsin constitution, and more, as well as to the supporting legislative agencies (e.g., Legislative Fiscal Bureau, Legislative Reference Bureau, etc.)

The Wheeler Report—www.thewheelerreport.com Somewhat similar to Wispolitics (see below), The Wheeler Report organizes and compiles relevant press releases and election re-sults; but it does not do much actual reporting or blogging. Its niche for years has been the tracking of the state legislature. Very well organized web site.

WisEye—www.wiseye.org WisEye is the independent, not-for-profit organization that the state legislature contracts with to do its live streaming and video archiving of select committee meetings and all floor periods. WisEye also does interviews with newsmakers and videos Supreme Court ses-sions, pertinent press conferences, etc. WisEye gives you a live “eye” on what is happening in state government. Some cable companies carry WisEye, as well.

Wispolitics—www.wispolitics.com An excellent source for the day’s state political news. Wis-politics provides a compilation of press releases from elected officials, organizations, departments and agencies, candidates, and more. Wis-politics also does its own reporting and blogging on the top issues of the day.
