at UCSF and outstanding dedication to Family House. Their understanding of the sick children and families served by Family House is profound: Sam, first as a neonatologist

and now UCSF Chancellor, and Jane, as a social worker for many years, demonstrate an extraordinary level of compassion

and generosity.

Tonight we remember one of Family House’s founders, Barry Grove. When Barry’s son Christian passed away from liver cancer at the age of 7, Barry was inspired to make a difference and help other

families battling pediatric cancer. As an attorney, Barry’s expertise was instrumental in establishing the original Family House on Irving

Street, and we remember and honor his contributions toward helping thousands of families each year.

Family house missionFamily House serves as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses

by providing physical comfort and emotional support, free from financial concerns.

The Steeley family

As a young child, Harrison Steeley was diagnosed with a rare blood condition that would surely turn cancerous. The only treatment to

save his life would be a bone marrow transplant. Imagine the dismay of his parents, Chris and Jodie, when their second son, Truman, was

born with the same life-threatening genetic condition.

Truman just passed his first post-BMT anniversary, while Harrison is currently undergoing treatment. “Family House supported us and

has been instrumental in getting us through these two challenges. We had some of the emotional and financial burden lifted;

they saved us from bankruptcy,” Jodie says.
