Harry Jerome Murphy passed away on August 23, 2017, at the age of 66. Harry was born in the town of Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia on May 16, 1951. He was the eighth child of ten children, eight boys and two girls, of JB and Christine (Reid) Murphy. Harry attended Griffin High School and was very active in Athletics. He excelled in basketball, baseball, football and track. He played first string forward leading the Griffin High Basketball team to the championship, where they placed second. He was also one of the first African American team players, and one of the first African Americans to graduate from Griffin High after integrating the school. Harry was an adventurous man from a young age, he learned to swim at the age of four from his father and older brother, swimming was another one of his passions, he worked part time as a life guard at Griffin Park and Recreation. He was highly involved in organized sports. He also competed in swimming shows at Fairmount Community Center. It’s easy to say that he was favored and blessed in the Athletics Department. After high school, he attended St. Augustine University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he received a BA in History and Government, and also met his future wife Vivian Diane Little. During his college years, he ran and excelled in track and field. He also crossed the burning sands and became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and was known by the name “Georgia Red”. It’s no secret he enjoyed his college years and lived life to the fullest and was an all around people person. He married Vivian Diane Little on September 6, 1975 and they had two children, Tianna and Brandon. Harry knew no bounds and always did whatever was needed to provide for his family. He had many jobs the first being a Police Officer back in his hometown, Griffin, Georgia. His early career was in the Airline Industry with Eastern Airlines, where he crossed the strike line. During his career with Eastern, he and his family also relocated to Houston, Texas for a period of time. After Eastern folded and many other odd end jobs, he found his final career with the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, where he first started out throwing a paper route. He climbed his way up the ladder and retired from the company as a Circulation Manager and received several awards and accomplishments along the way. Harry was known for helping others excel in the work force and was always willing to give others employment opportunities. He was also a

member of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. He enjoyed being a part of yet another group of successful African American Men and dressing up and getting clean was also a perk he enjoyed. Everyone that knew him knew he loved to get “clean”. After retirement, Harry went back to his athletic roots and coached baseball and basketball at Solid Rock Academy and was highly loved by the youth there. His passion and drive pushed them to higher levels and he truly loved working with youth in sports. In his later years, he loved spending time with his three grandchildren. He and his wife were like second parents. He enjoyed traveling with them, watching them play sports and just relaxing around the house with them running around doing whatever their hearts desired. Harry was preceded in death by his parents JB and Christine Murphy; siblings: David, Romeo, Bobby, Eddie Brice, and Bernice Murphy. His memories will be everlasting in the hearts of his wife Vivian Little Murphy; his children: Tianna Murphy DeLoatch (Raymond) and Brandon Clark Murphy (Chandra); his sister Reverend Gladys Freeman; brothers: JB Murphy, Jr. (Sandra), Walter Scott, and Pastor Clinton Murphy (Thea); grandchildren: Riley, Tanner, and Vision; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends.
