Grasmere, LA22 9SHTel: 015394 35544 www.wordsworth.org.uk

Wordsworth returned to his native Lake District in 1799. He made a home with his sister Dorothy in a humble cottage on the edge of Grasmere village. He described his new home and the garden that surrounded it as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”. It fed his inspiration. Wordsworth wrote some of the most famous poetry in the English language here and Dorothy Wordsworth wrote her much-loved Grasmere Journal here. It was also a bustling family home with his wife Mary, their children and Dorothy. Romantic poets, writers and artists including Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas De Quincey stayed here often. We know it today as Dove Cottage, the place where poetry changed forever.

Swarthmoor Hall is a 16th century country house set in beautiful gardens. Visitors speak about its tranquillity.

A writer commented: “The fictional dramas of Downton Abbey seem relatively tame to the actual events in Swarthmoor Hall’s history. The birthplace of the Quaker movement has all the elements of a great screenplay: love, conflict, conviction and passion.”

There are six historic rooms to view with a fine selection of 17th century furniture. The new barn café continues the Hall’s centuries old reputation for hospitality, serving delicious sweet and savoury dishes sourced from talented local artisans and food producers such as the Fat Flour Bakery.
