Accessorise in the ‘Blinx’ of an eye!Blinx are a new range of soft silicone charms that allow children to customise existing spectacle frames by simply sliding the charms on and off the arms of their glasses. They can be worn individually, as matching pairs, or mixed together to create a unique and colourful look. The charms can also be easily adapted to fit adult frames and sunglasses.

Retailing at just £1.99, the charms provide a cost effective way of allowing children to mix and match their look, as well as provid-ing a useful tool to encourage children who may be reluctant to wear their glasses. “The idea was to create something cool and collectable that would help children regain some control over a situation they may not feel entirely positive about,” explains Stephanie Collier, creator of Blinx.

The charms are stocked in a number of optical practices nationwide and can also be purchased directly online at www.myblinx.co.uk

New book to help parents with children suffering from hip conditionCast Life – A Parent’s Guide to DDH was published this autumn and offers a vital lifeline to parents with children suffering from Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). DDH occurs when the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit snugly together and whilst it can affect around one child in every thousand, information and support is shockingly poor, often leaving parents feeling confused about what happens next.

The author, Natalie Trice, was inspired by her son who was diagnosed at four months. She passionately believes that there needs to be more awareness of DDH as, if left untreated, it can lead to long term disability, hip replacements and lifelong pain. Cast Life is a comprehensive book that covers everything from explanations about the condition and details of the various treatments involved, to the various products available to make life during treatment easier. It also looks at family life and dealing with emotions, as well as featuring first person stories. Cast Life is available on Amazon and Natalie has also set up a charity called Spica Warrior offering information about DDH, 10% of the royalties will be going to this cause. She also blogs about the condition at www.justbecauseilove.co.uk

Youngest Entrepreneurs enter Dragons’ DenSisters Kia and Sky Ballantyne, aged 14 and 12, became the youngest entrepreneurs ever to pitch to the formidable Dragons’ Den panel. Their clever product, a harness for children who are learning to ride their bike, started as school homework, and has grown into a business. They are now selling their Crikey Bikey® harness on their website and in national retailers such as Evans Cycles and Mountain Warehouse. The girls are running their business largely by themselves!

Following their pitch, Touker Suleyman, a leading fashion entrepreneur and global manufacturer, offered “Touker Time” and has generously offered to mentor them.www.crikeybikey.com

Incentivise your little stars!Whether it’s to remind children to clean their teeth, do their homework, keep their room tidy or be good to their sibling, the power of the star chart never diminishes, believes Present Print, a company that aims to add a new twist to gifts.

As the little ones settle back into the daily routine of school life and with Christmas round the corner, encouraging children to improve behaviour can at times, as many mums and dads know, be a bit tricky. Whilst certainly not a new phenomena, tried and tested by parents throughout the decades, the star chart is considered by many as one of the most powerful ways to kick-start children to make a positive change, not to mention relieving a few household tensions too!

With a host of motivating designs available, Present Print’s star charts are more engaging - it’s your child’s very own chart with their very own rewards, personalised especially for them. Priced at £5.99, the A3 reward charts can be personalised with just a name or a name and a lovely photograph of your little star. Available online, the charts come complete with removable stars and magnetic fixings. Also available in the Present Print reward range are personalised Chores4Rewards and Sleeps2Go charts.

Coughs and SneezesHow to cope with winter woesBy Sally J. Hall

There are over 200 cold viruses, so it’s no wonder our children seem to come down with a cold almost every five minutes. We don’t know what causes the “Common Cold” but the symptoms are runny nose, sore throat, temperature and a general feeling of poor health. When do you let nature run its course, and when do you call the doctor?

For very small children, a blocked nose stops him being able to breath and can interfere with feeding. Clear nostrils with a soft cloth soaked in sterile saline solution or use a nasal aspirator. Relieve symptoms with a decongestant rub or use a few drops of a decongestant spray or eucalyptus oil on a tissue near your baby as he sleeps. A vaporiser or humidifier can help too. Sleep may be affected by a cough, so encourage naps during the day.

For a slight fever, use infant paracetamol or ibuprofen; read the instructions and use the right amount for your child’s age. Never use a cough and cold remedy with children under six years old. Make sure that your child continues to get plenty of fluids but try to avoid lots of sugary drinks and cordials, as you’ll have tooth decay to cope with later on!

If your child is under three months, it’s always worth checking symptoms with your doctor, as small children can become very ill quickly. If your child is floppy and unresponsive or very fussy, call the doctor or go straight to the hospital.

Seek medical advice if you think it’s not a cold. Flu can be serious in young children. Croup, a viral illness that causes a bark-like cough, can be swiftly treated with steroids, and whooping cough, a bacterial infection, needs antibiotics. If you are concerned that your child may have meningitis, you must go to the hospital at once. If in doubt, get to A&E – the staff will be only too happy to be able to set your mind at rest.

All babies to be protected against meningitisA new vaccine to protect babies against meningitis B has been introduced for all childhood vaccinations for babies aged two, four and 24 months. Since September 2015, all babes will routinely be given the meningitis vaccine at their regular vaccination appointments. The scheme was delayed by cost disputes but is now the first national, publically funded programme against this deadly infection in the world. It should protect babies and children against 90% of meningococcal group B bacteria. This can affect babies under the age of one and can be caught up to around the age of five years. If left untreated, it can cause damage to the brain and cause blood poisoning. It can also kill. The Men ACWY vaccine will also be offered to all 17 and 18 year olds who are starting university this year.

Do you coo?Babies learn different aspects of language from mum or dad. A study has shown that mums are more likely to coo and use non-word based language with babies. Dads are more likely to talk in ‘proper’ language. Surprisingly, both approaches are good for your baby’s development and have a role to play in how babies learn language.

A team at Washington State University attached microphones to parents of pre-school children and recorded verbal exchanges with their children, using speech recognition software to analyse results.

They believe the way women speak to children - using high pitched sounds and cooing to them - promotes bonding, while the more adult speech of dads gives them a bridge to adult life.

Professor Mark VanDam, who led the research, said: “The parents are complementary to their children’s language learning.”

Nurturing and inspiring children in Stratford-upon-Avon for over 50 years

Issue 46 : (E)

Looking for childcare?Field House Day Nursery & Pre-School in Kenilworth is a homely nursery that offers care to children aged between 6 weeks and 5 years. We pride ourselves on offering good quality childcare and education, and understand that children are at the centre of everything that we do. We ensure that we meet all individual needs and support children’s interests as they grow and develop.

The nursery has just been inspected by Ofsted and has been given a ‘Good’ grading. “Children are confident, secure and settle quickly because of the close relationships they build with their key persons. Staff consistently praise children and value what they say. Children demonstrate an excellent understanding of the setting’s ‘golden values’. They behave in a positive manner and play very well together.” Ofsted Report, 2015/2016.

We have recently refurbished the setting, providing environments that allow children to explore and discover. All of this is complimented by our knowledgeable staff who take the time to get to know the children and families, ensuring that their time at Field House is filled with fun.

“Since new management there has been loads of investment, all new toys, far more ‘imaginative’ toys such as wood bricks and tubes and wheels in the pre-school area for my son. He loves it there and comes home with all sorts of stories! We have loads of communication with the staff which makes me feel glad they are open and I feel included.” Elizabeth H, Mother of Child.

Selecting a nursery can be daunting but we aim to make this as easy as possible through our free induction sessions that work around your family to ensure your child is settled and ready for nursery life. We believe that working with parents/carers will give children the best possible start in their early education.

Creating Confident ChildrenBy Liat Hughes-Joshi

Confidence is just as important in life - some might think more so - as a handful of A grades. It’s vital to emotional wellbeing and something most of us hope our children will develop. But how can we instil this feeling, particularly if it doesn’t come naturally to them?

Accept your child’s starting point Not all of us are confident by nature and whilst we can encourage self-belief, transforming a shy child into the ‘life and soul of the party’, is rarely realistic.

Accept your child’s personality and ‘starting point’; it might be different to yours, or others, and that’s absolutely fine.

Don’t force thingsYour child needs to trust you when taking on new experiences and forcing them into something they’re very uncomfortable with damages that trust.

Instead, take small steps to encourage confidenceFind opportunities to stretch just a bit beyond what your son or daughter is happy doing at any one time.

Work out what their fear isPin down their concerns - perhaps it’s that they’ll make a fool of themselves, won’t be able to find you at the end of the party, or won’t be understood. Address their concerns and provide reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter and that you’re there for them.

Keep praise specialKeep praise for when it’s truly warranted and focus on effort rather than just results. This way, when they do achieve something amazing, your comments will have more impact.

Find their forte If your child doesn’t do so well at school, this can erode their self-esteem. Seek opportunities for them to try activities out of school and highlight positive personality traits, such as being especially kind or a good organiser.

Step back sometimes and let them ‘have a go’ Children benefit from finding their own solutions, doing things their way sometimes and taking sensible risks.

Guide and advise but try not to jump in and take over too quickly. Whether it’s allowing your three-year-old to choose her own outfit or your ten-year-old to walk to the post box alone, letting go is a crucial confidence builder.

Liat Hughes-Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Awarded “Outstanding” ISI - 2015

Top marks again for The Croft! The Croft Preparatory School in Stratford-upon-Avon was delighted to announce recently that it had been awarded ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Excellent’ accreditations from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) for the third consecutive inspection.

Early Years (comprising Nursery, Little Crofters Pre-School and Reception) was rated as an ‘Outstanding’ provision in

all areas with no recommendations for improvement. The inspection report noted that ‘Provision for the children’s well-being is outstanding. Children are happy and confident and benefit from the highly stimulating environment and exciting activities provided. The children’s personal and emotional development is outstanding’.

Years 1 to 6 equally impressed the inspectors who returned an overall accreditation of ‘Excellent’, the highest award in this category. The inspectors wrote, ‘The quality of pupils’ achievements and learning is excellent. Pupils are extremely well educated’. The inspectors also observed that ‘music, drama, art and sport feature strongly in the curriculum, supported by excellent facilities’ and that ‘the dynamic, well planned curriculum provides pupils with a rich learning experience, well suited to all their needs.’

Headmaster, Mr Marcus Cook, commented, “The fantastic inspection findings endorse the long tradition of The Croft’s reputation as an outstanding educational provider where high quality academic achievements are underpinned by a caring, nurturing environment. I am delighted that the dedicated staff, highly motivated pupils and supportive parents have a report to be proud of and I would like to thank them for their contribution to our fabulous inspection result.”

Better together: Celebrating 40 years of coeducationKing Henry VIII School is holding a series of events this year to celebrate forty years of successfully educating boys and girls together. With recent academic results being very strong and numbers of applicants to the school thriving, the national trend of increasing popularity of coeducation is very much in evidence.

Opportunities for girls abound at the school, as shown by the recent success of the girls’ rugby team as well as the netball team reaching the National Finals last year. In the classroom too, girls excel in subjects such as the sciences and Maths, with students receiving Astronomy and Physics awards from the University of Warwick. There is no ‘one size fits all’ model at a good coeducational school such as King Henry VIII School.

There are two events this term at the school. Saturday 26th September saw afternoon tea held in the Library followed by discussions focusing on the benefits of coeducation. One of Coventry’s most famous sons, Philip Larkin, was educated at the school and the 30th anniversary of his death will be commemorated with discussions and talks on Wednesday 2nd December.

Parents who are interested in learning more about the school and the benefits of coeducation are warmly invited to get in touch with David Morton, Deputy Head. www.kinghenrys.co.uk

Warwick School hosts Japanese Rugby TeamWarwick School was delighted to host the Japanese Rugby Team during the Rugby World Cup 2015. The Japanese Team used the outstanding facilities at the school - 12 rugby pitches including a floodlit pitch, three training gyms and an indoor swimming pool - from 25 September until 9 October.

Children from Warwick School and Warwick Prep School gave them a fantastic welcome when they arrived. As the children sang ‘Go Japan’, the captain of the team was presented with a thousand origami cranes by Emily Homma, who created the cranes and Aaryan Dassaur, the youngest member of Warwick School. The origami crane symbolises good luck according to Japanese legend.

The Japanese players attended training sessions at Warwick School most days and whilst their focus was on training and match performance, the players found some time to talk to the boys at school and sign autographs. They also presented prizes at an U11 Rugby Tournament for local schools. The highlight of their visit for the school was a training session with the team’s coaches, attended by a large number of Warwick School rugby players. www.warwickschool.org

Christmas

Creating Christmas magicThe Elf on The Shelf is an enchanting tale of Christmas tradition wrapped up in a seasonal box set that includes a beautifully illustrated children’s book and a scout elf sent by Santa from the North Pole. This U.S. publishing phenomenon is set to capture English hearts this winter with its charming tale of Santa’s helpers and their special role at Christmas time. Each illustrated, hardback book comes as part of a box set that also includes one of Santa’s scout elves, whose job is to watch during the day and report to Santa every night. When a family adopts a scout elf and gives it a name, the scout elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa Claus about all of the day’s adventures. Each morning the scout elf returns to its family and perches in a different place to watch the festive fun, creating a unique family moment. Children love to race around the house and see where their scout elf has landed.

The Elf on the Shelf® launches this Christmas in the UK from official scout elf adoption centres, including www.elfontheshelf.co.uk, John Lewis and select speciality retailers. Select retail locations will also feature the book Elf Pets: A Reindeer Tradition and the Claus Couture Collection®, which features unique and fun clothes to compliment the scout elves and their Elf Pets® Reindeer counterparts.

Christmas Cookie Tree DecorationsThese delicious shortbread biscuits will look great on the tree although we suspect they won’t be there long! This is such a simple recipe and is quick and easy to make with your children.

Time neededAbout half an hour, including baking time

IngredientsPlain flour, 200gCool butter, 100gCaster sugar, 50gWriting icing, white, green, red (great for drawing lines and shapes)Decorations in silver, red, green, gold or white

You will needLarge bowlSieveFlat baking traysStar cookie cutters (or other festive shapes)Clean pencilSilver, gold, white, green or red ribbon

MethodWith your child, measure the flour and then let your little one spoon the flour into the sieve, held above the bowl. Sift the flour.

Add the sugar

Add the butter, cut into cubes.

With clean hands, show your child how to rub the butter into the flour. Keep rubbing then kneading and it should come together into a ball.

Without over-working the dough, roll it out on a flat surface, dusted with flour.

Using the cookie cutters, help your child stamp out star shapes and place them on the baking tray. Use the blunt end of the clean pencil to make a hole at the top of one of the points for the ribbon.

Bake at 320F/160C/Gas 6 for 12-15 minutes until golden.

When cool, decorate with writing icing and any other decorations you like, such as sugar balls.

Hang on the tree!

Send your child a ‘Letter from Santa’ and support the NSPCCTo help share the magic of Christmas, the NSPCC has teamed up with Santa to send personalised letters out to children. Each of Santa’s letters comes with beautiful illustrations and stories that are tailored to specific age groups. Parents can choose whether the letter is signed by ‘Santa’ or ‘Father Christmas’, and each letter comes with an age appropriate game for children to play. You can now add a unique PS message and you will also receive a complimentary pack with games, recipes and activities. Plus, there is the option to choose to send a special poem written to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas - a keepsake to treasure for years to come. For a suggested donation of only £5 parents can delight their own children whilst helping others who are less fortunate.

Request your Letter from Santa up until 22nd December at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa
