Families Surrey East wants to wish William and Kate and all families a wonderful summer, full of discovery, activity and fun. The magazine is full of ideas – and do let us know of any thing you discover.

Our Parties feature on pages 11-14 offers some great places for parties – pull out the guide and keep it with the entertainment directory in November-December issue. Some venues are just great for hosting your own style of party, others have fun activities as part of the place.

This year for the first time our Holiday Camps and Courses Guide (page 20-23) includes summer dates – because you’ve told us you want to start planning those holidays now.

With Bank Holidays, Father’s Day (June 19), lots of great days out at fairs and shows (remember Blindley Heath on 1&2 May and Cowpie on 8th!) – this is the time to get out and about!

WEIGHT LOSS LAUNCH

Nutritional Therapist and motivational weight loss coach Helen Williams and Personal Trainer Kim Raine have together launched Balanced Health, which combines developing good health with weight loss as a natural side effect!

Helen and Kim are currently offering day weight-loss seminars for their unique approach at spa hotel The Manor House, just outside Guildford. The day combines nutritional information, exercise advice, hypnotherapy and NLP (Neurolinguistic programming).

The next Balanced Health seminar is Saturday, 14 May - for full details see www.surreyfatloss.com and 30% OFF for Families Surrey East readers!

BLUE TIT tops the Surrey BirdwatchChildren from 30 schools in Surrey took part in the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch this year, and showed that the Blue Tit was the most common visitor to local playgrounds.

Blackbird numbers have increased by 88% in schools and were the UK number one this year. Numbers of Starlings, the UK number one until 2009, have declined by a third.

As well as being fun and educational, the survey also helps the RSPB see how the bird populations are changing.

The benefits of contact with nature are now widely recognised as playing an important role in a child’s education and social development. Independent research shows such activities can have a positive impact on children’s mental and physical health.

Some schools now hold birdwatch breakfasts or after school wildlife clubs, while others transform classrooms into bird hides. Do tell us about yours! www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch

Heavenly Saturdays! Now Heaven can be enjoyed by all the family together, as it has started to open on Saturdays, 10am until 3pm.

As the warmer weather appears the glorious

courtyard café, catered by Cullenders, makes a perfect setting for family brunch or lunch or just go along to relax in the Play Room or Lounge with coffee, a cold beer or Pimms, while mum pops up to the Pamper Rooms for a treat…

Although the Play Room caters only for the 0-5’s, well-behaved older children are also welcome at Heaven – why not take some comics or the DS along to keep them amused too?

The shop offers lots of gift ideas, and in the beautiful Studio there will be a Saturday morning exercise class on offer later on this season.

Are you caring for someone else’s child? When a child lives with someone who is not their parent or a close relative for more than 28 days, this arrangement is known as ‘private fostering’.

To ensure the safety of the child, the parent or carer of the privately fostered child must inform social services of these private care arrangements. Social services in return have to do an assessment to ensure that the child is safe and well looked after. They will also visit the child and carer regularly to offer practical support and advice.

Surrey County Council cares about the safety and welfare of children in Surrey. Private fostering only applies to children who are under 16, or under 18 if they have a disability.

If your child is privately fostered, or if you are privately fostering a child please contact Surrey’s Contact Centre on 0300 200 1006.

Surrey County Council is looking for foster carers who can provide a safe and supportive environment for young mothers and their newborn babies, allowing vulnerable parents to be assessed in their ability to parent their own child.

Placements will be task-focused and time-limited. A typical placement lasts for four months.

You need to be:• Experienced in caring for babies

• Able to communicate and empathise with parents who may have experienced a range of difficulties in their lives

• Equipped to help parents increase in their skills and confidence in caring for their baby

• Able to work with a care plan, contribute to assessments

You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you gave a vulnerable parent a chance to care for their baby and the baby the opportunity to be in a safe environment without being separated from their parent while the assessment is being made. In return you will receive approximately £700 a week and a full training and support package.

There are many different types of fostering. Surrey County Council runs fostering evenings throughout the year to help potential foster parents decide if this is something they can offer.

Local evenings are held in Reigate at the Omnibus Building in Lesbourne Road, RH2 7JA. The next meetings in 2011 are on 9 May, 4 July and 5 September, starting at 6.45pm. For more information, call 08000 96 96 26 or go to www.surreycc.gov.uk/fostering

Adam Reynolds of Springfit Gymnastics & Trampoline Club introduces us to the developing sport and the local courses and workshops children can attend.

If you’ve seen children flying through the air, springing and spinning their way around your local area you may well have dismissed it as mere horseplay. But next time, pause,

take a moment, and look at what they’re actually doing. It’s likely that you’re watching Parkour.

Similar to free-running – but not to be confused with - Parkour is the latest freestyle acrobatic sport to hit our streets and gymnasiums. As with a lot of trends, teenagers are leading the way, and with no expensive equipment required, anyone can learn.

In simple terms, Parkour is the physical discipline of overcoming obstacles in your path. In other words, adapting your movements to the environment. Those that practise Parkour are known as ‘traceurs’ and for them it’s also a state of mind, rather than simply a set of actions. It’s about overcoming and adapting to everyday mental and emotional obstacles, as well as enjoying the challenge of conquering physical barriers.

Parkour differs from the art of free-running which has more emphasis on freedom of expression and creativity, rather than efficiency and speed. Traceurs take the most

We all know that our kids need more exercise – outdoors when the weather is good – so that they grow up lean, healthy and alert. One development that helps all these is Parkour, an exciting new sport, which makes kids think quickly and move with confidence over and around obstacles. It involves running, jumping, vaulting, and climbing obstacles in natural or urban environments to get to your destination in the most efficient way.

direct path through an obstacle as rapidly as that route can be safely traversed. By training in Parkour, self-confidence and critical-thinking skills are enhanced and efficient movement, which helps to reduce injury, becomes the focus.

One of Parkour’s leading figures in the UK is Alistair ‘Buster’ O’Loughlin, who runs the Urban Playground group in Brighton. In tandem with some of the Yamakasi group – pioneers of the sport – Buster works with councils and organisations to develop the discipline and will run workshops in Crawley’s PKTA facility in Bewbush this summer. This is England’s first ever Parkour practice park, which opened in 2009 – so this activity is really getting ahead in our local area!

Springfit Gym club in Redhill and Horley has been running Parkour classes at St Bede’s school in Redhill and, led by its team of traceur coaches, along with Buster, is aiming to get exposure in Surrey for this ‘art of movement’.

Dorking has also recently seen the introduction of Parkour workshops at St John’s Community

School, Goodwyns Road during the Easter Holidays. For more information about summer events run by MVDC, contact Kath McCutcheon, Arts Development Officer, on 01306 879188 or Zach Carter on 07527 27 35 62.

Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment.

Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden.

Get composting today – for a greener tomorrow.

Why compost?Compost is a natural, nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keep your soil’s PH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it!

Home-made compost is peat-free which means it is good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them.

Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose thegreenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting is the perfect solution.

Spring into composting

A step-by-step guide1. Find the right site. Site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space

is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise.

2. Add the right ingredients. Fill your kitchen caddy with the right ingredients such as tea bags, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish.

3. Fill it up. Empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your bin or heap. A 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.

4. After 9-12 months. The ingredients you have put in your bin or heap should have turned into a dark brown, earthy smelling material at the bottom of the bin, which can be dug out, with the newer material being left.

5. Ready! Once your compost resembles thick, moist soil and smells very earthy, it’s ready to use.

6. Collect the compost. Instructions will be delivered with your bin. But simply lift the bin slightly or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork or spade. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost.

7. Use it. And watch your garden bloom. Compost can be used for all types of planting needs – vegetable plants for allotments; general potting (if mixed with something like ordinary soil); or flowerbeds and enriching new borders by mixing in existing soil.

Involve your children tooEvery school-aged child knows about reduce, reuse and recycle. Composting involves all these steps plus the benefit of having fun and watching your garden grow.

BIRTHday PaRTIeS PuLL-OuT GuIde

Over 73% of parents in the South East would reduce their spending on clothes and nights out rather than their children’s activities, including toys and birthday parties, according to a new survey recently published to mark the tenth anniversary of Chatterbox Challenge, an annual mass sing-along activity for children aged 0-5, run by I CAN, the national children’s communication charity. So this year’s list of party venues is even bigger than last year’s! And you can pull out these pages and keep them safely alongside the Party Entertainment and Suppliers Directory – published in the November-December issue of Families Surrey East.

Ages and StagesFor babies and toddlers, a family gathering at home can be lovely – but what about a visit to a farm, with tea and cake? Seeing animals close up is stimulating and fun – and tractor-trailer rides are memorable!

Four- to six-year-olds, with lots of new school friends, need space to play and love a few organised games. Leisure Centres work really well, offering lots of safe space, sometimes with a party host to help organise the children, too.

Seven- to nine-year-olds are ready to move into the world of imaginative themes or focus on creative activities. By ten+ they are ready to demonstrate prowess in physical activities from lasertag to zipwire or trampolining. All these - and more - are found in the Guide on the next pages

www.ican.org.uk / www.talkingpoint.org.uk

PERSONALISEd TATTOOS – a great idea for children partying at busy venues! (Or school trips, the beach and other crowded places..) Donna Newman from Dorking has told us about her new child safety initiative, ‘Please Call Mum’®, to help reunite lost children with parents, teachers or carers.

Please Call Mum® is a range of temporary tattoo transfers, personalised to include your mobile number and applied easily to a child’s forearm. They help reduce the anguish experienced if young children become separated from accompanying adults. The tattoo transfers are ordered via Please Call Mum’s website and dispatched within 24 hours.

FREE TATTOO TRANSFERSFamilies Surrey

East has a great offer for readers, so you can try the transfers

free of charge! The first 50 readers to visit www.pleasecallmum.com and place an order using promotional code FSE11 will receive a sheet of 12 personalised transfers free!

HOLIdayS

We all love a change of scenery and it really does us all good to get away. But do we have to fly abroad or even travel for hours by car to have the feeling of ‘getting away from it all’?We have made a collection of one-star to five-star breaks, great for short or longer holidays, which don’t require lots of travelling, and leave you with more time to relax and enjoy yourselves. Here are the places that are just around the corner, but make you feel ‘a world away’. And if you have a busy partner who can’t always join you for the whole break, why not go somewhere nearby, making the travel time easier for everybody?

First – camping. I’ve always loved the fun of being so close to the grass and if you do too – or if you want a miraculously inexpensive way to spend time – here are three great ideas.

Sussex Wildlife Trust offers seaside weekends for families, sleeping in barns and exploring rock pools, finding bats or beautifying a stretch of sand. With suppers under the stars and a hearty breakfast, this is a weekend for adventuring. For two parents and two children at Seven Sisters Country Park, 14/15 May, the cost is £90. Other weekends are on offer in September.

The Hop Farm Touring and Camping Park is near to Tunbridge Wells in the heart of the Kent countryside, amongst 500 acres of natural landscape to explore.

It also has the advantage of being a major tourist attraction! Refurbished shower facilities and a camp shop will assure uncertain campers of a degree of comfort. Dogs are always welcome as long as they are kept on a lead.

This year The Hop Farm is offering an ‘August Special’ which includes 1 month’s camping, electric and entrance to The Hop Farm Family Park attraction’s daily themed Summer activities for £515.

We’ve mentioned ‘glamping’ before – and you really can camp in absolute luxury, rather like a Victorian explorer, on a large estate, with luxurious bathing and cooking facilities and your own ‘discovery’ tent, complete with microscope! The nearest is Long Marney Tower in Essex, and a three-night break starts at just under £300 for a maximum of 8 people.

By staying on a large estate you will certainly have the ‘world away’ feeling. Another way to experience this is to stay in the grounds of a National Trust property – or even a castle. Polesden Lacey (NT) has a gorgeous Gardener’s Cottage (6 adults) and Nyman’s Gardens (NT) in Sussex has Woodlands Cottage (4 adults). Imagine being there once all the visitors have gone! And, if you want the five star treatment, stay at Hever Castle’s Medley Court.

On the NT properties, 3 nights in May will cost around £500 (£254 in February) at Nymans and £682 (£358 in February) to stay at Polesden Lacey. Two nights in May at Medley Court (5 star) house, which sleeps 7, costs £1,250.

Cottages can be great places for a family get together. Some companies offer last minute rates and have cottages nearby. One cottage recently available at a discount via Recommended Holidays was the lovely Old Drift House in Kersey, Suffolk.

Much cheaper and completely different, but still spacious and beautifully presented is The Holiday Inn at Chessington. Book a room overlooking the Safari Park and wake up to zebras and antelopes grazing quietly in the Wanyama Village & Reserve! Find the special rates for ‘Roar and Snore’, which gives the whole family early access to the World of Adventures and the Zoo plus a night in the hotel. You can dine at the Resort’s brand new African-themed Zafari Bar & Grill and enjoy grilled meats cooked in the open kitchen. See the voucher on this page – take it with you and receive 2 lunches for £10!

Outstanding Inspection at dunottarGovernment inspectors from the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate visited Dunottar School in Reigate at the beginning of March. In their report they found that, “The quality of the pupils’ achievements and their learning, attitudes and skills is excellent. The curriculum provision of the school is outstanding and suitable for all ages, needs and abilities. The quality of teaching is excellent. The quality of governance, leadership and management is outstanding. The arrangements for welfare, health and safety are outstanding. From EYFS onwards, the excellent pastoral care ensures that girls are valued and cared for.”

The report also highlighted the excellent links the school enjoys with parents and the very significant contribution the parents’ association makes to the school.

dawnay Playgroup opens its new gardenGail Hard, Head Teacher at The Dawnay School, Great Bookham, declared the new garden officially open on February 18th. The specially designed all-weather surface and canopy, just outside the playgroup’s permanent classroom, incorporates a huge sandpit sensory area with herbs and other flower beds and plants. Thereare areas for the children to grow their own vegetables and, a sure firm favourite, a minibeast corner.

The Big Lottery Fund provided £10,000 towards the garden and the remainder was raised by the playgroup, to support the playgroup’s emphasis on development through play.

Jasmine, age 4, said “It’s really good that we can play out even in the rain and not get wet. It’s all lovely”.

Hawthorns’ excellent report!A recent I.S.I. Early Years inspection found that “The Hawthorns School in Bletchingley provides an excellent start to the children’s education. The provision and outcomes for the children were deemed to be outstanding. Children are happy, enthusiastic learners who are eager to try out new activities because they feel safe. They respond quickly to the high expectations of the staff and the partnership with parents and carers is close and inclusive. The outdoor learning environment is an integral part of their day and used to enhance pupils’ educational experiences”.

An exciting brand new Pre-Prep is under construction and is due to be completed in the Autumn Term. Contact Gail Johnson, the Admissions Secretary, on 01883 743048 x 2019 to arrange a visit.

RaaS goes for energy efficient warmthThe Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Reigate secured a loan of £650,000 to spend on improvements to the heating and lighting systems at the boarding school. The finance came from SALIX, the independent company that manages public investment in energy efficiency technologies across the UK public sector.

The school expects to have repaid the loan within four years. Thereafter the savings in energy costs will be ploughed straight back into the school and improving facilities for pupils.

The School has seen a reduction in electricity costs (due to more efficient lighting) of 17% and heating costs have reduced by 28%.

Times tables boostPeter Cresswell, head teacher of a UK primary school and Andy Shipman have launched a new website - www.timestoo.co.uk - aimed at helping children learn to love times tables and improve their multiplication skills.Times Too is a simple web-based application that supports existing classroom practice. Children can also practise at home at the level set for them by their teacher.
