He was playing video games Friday with his younger brothers when he was selected in the third round by the Wash- ington Nationals. “I wasn’t paying real close attention today,” he said. “We were playing on the PlayStation when my cellphone blew up with about 60 texts in a minute.” Reetz, a senior catcher from Norris High School, was the 93rd player se- lected overall. He had hoped to hear his name called during the draft’s first two rounds Thursday night, but that didn’t happen. “I was a little discouraged,” he said. “You obviously want to go as soon as possible, but I’m extremely excited about the way things turned out.” Now comes the difficult part for Reetz, a Nebraska recruit who must decide whether to turn pro or honor his commitment to the Huskers. It’s a decision Reetz doesn’t take lightly. “The next step is to sit down and talk to the Nationals,” he said. “We’ll see how that works out, and then I’ll discuss things with my family.” That family consists of his parents Andy and Leslie, and his three video gaming brothers — Will (14), Drew (13) and Garet (6). Reetz becomes the first Nebraska high school player since 1996 to be selected in the first five rounds of the draft. Bellevue East pitcher Buddy Carlyle was drafted in the second round that year by the Cincinnati Reds. Reetz batted .486 and drove in 37 runs for the Class B Titans this spring. He also belted eight home runs and had a 2.21 ERA as the team’s closer. The 18-year-old, who recently was named the Gatorade Nebraska player of the year, said he was surprised that Washington was the team that selected him. “I didn’t expect that at all,” he said. “But I’m pretty fired up about it because they’ve got some really good players.” In addition to young stars such as Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals already have someone in their organization Reetz knows. Drew Ward, a 2013 third-round selection who is playing Class A ball this season, played along with Reetz on a USA Base- ball showcase team. “I feel thankful and blessed that I was selected in the draft,” Reetz said. “Now we’ll see what happens from here.” Contact the writer: 402-444-1350, [email protected] twitter.com/MPattersonOWH Norris star excited to land with Nationals Pelini wasn’t yet sure if the 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver would join the football team in Lincoln for summer conditioning workouts next week. “We’re ready for him to come,” Pelini said. Harrison, who watched the draft from the MLB Network studio in New Jersey Thursday, could not be reached for comment. Harrison’s adviser, Rob Martin, declined an interview request Friday morning. The deadline for drafted players to sign professional contracts is July 18. A Milwaukee front office executive acknowledged Thursday night that signing the outfielder from Lee’s Sum- mit, Missouri, is not a certainty. Bruce Seid, director of amateur scouting for the Brewers, told report- ers Thursday that he viewed drafting Harrison as an “opportunity” because of the prospect’s potential. But noth- ing’s guaranteed. “We know it’s probably going to be a tougher sign,” Seid said, “but at the same time, you have to take oppor- tunities like this. If we can make it work, we’ll make it work.” Area scout Drew Anderson, who let- tered with the Nebraska baseball pro- gram from 2001 to 2003, will work on Milwaukee’s behalf to try to persuade Harrison to sign a deal. Seid planned to speak with Harrison on Friday. The Brewers have been allotted a total of $7.6 million (ninth-most among MLB teams) to use on signing bonuses for all of the players they draft within the first 10 rounds. It’s likely that they’ll offer Harrison more than $1.1 million, the predetermined signing bonus value assigned to the No. 50 pick. Seid certainly had plenty of positive things to say about Harrison’s poten- tial. “I don’t ever want to put names to a player, but All-Star comparisons have come up on him,” Seid said. “He has a chance to play center field. He has good instincts out there, his strides are outstanding. He’s got a plus arm, he’s got plus raw power and his speed is above average. It’s just like any- thing: It’s about playing the game, get- ting enough at-bats and being patient in watching him develop.” Milwaukee used its 41st overall pick to draft shortstop Jacob Gate- wood, a high school player from Clovis, California. Gatewood, a USC baseball recruit, may have dropped a bit, too. The franchise’s general manger, Doug Melvin, said Thursday that the Brewers didn’t want to let Gatewood or Harrison slide for much longer on that first day. “If you don’t take them early, you’re not going to get them,” Melvin said. “They’re just going to go to school.” Contact the writer: 402-473-9585, [email protected] twitter.com/JonNyatawa Harrison: Brewers say K.C. prep star’s potential is worth the risk Continued from Page 1 Two notable major league players saw sons selected in the early rounds NEW YORK (AP) — Former big leaguers Lenny Dykstra and Charlie Leibrandt each had sons selected during the second day of the Major League Baseball draft. Luke Dykstra, an infielder at Westlake High School in suburban Los Angeles, was drafted in the seventh round by Atlanta. He’s the second son of the former All-Star outfielder to be drafted; infielder Cutter Dykstra was a second-round pick by Milwaukee in 2008 and is currently in Washington’s system. Florida State left-hander Brandon Leibrandt went in the sixth round to Philadelphia. He was 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA this season, but missed several weeks with a severely bruised left leg. After having no picks in the first two rounds, Baltimore made eight selections Friday, including Notre Dame right-hander Pat Connaughton, who also started for the Fighting Irish basketball team. After waiting to hear his name calledthe night before, Jakson Reetz took amore laid-back approach toward thesecond day of the Major League Base-ball draft.

He was playing video games Fridaywith his younger brothers when he wasselected in the third round by the Wash-ington Nationals.

“I wasn’t paying real close attentiontoday,” he said. “We were playing on thePlayStation when my cellphone blew upwith about 60 texts in a minute.”

Reetz, a senior catcher from NorrisHigh School, was the 93rd player se-lected overall. He had hoped to hear hisname called during the draft’s first tworounds Thursday night, but that didn’thappen.

“I was a little discouraged,” he said.“You obviously want to go as soon aspossible, but I’m extremely excitedabout the way things turned out.”

Now comes the difficult part forReetz, a Nebraska recruit who mustdecide whether to turn pro or honorhis commitment to the Huskers. It’s adecision Reetz doesn’t take lightly.

“The next step is to sit down and talkto the Nationals,” he said. “We’ll seehow that works out, and then I’ll discussthings with my family.”

That family consists of his parentsAndy and Leslie, and his three videogaming brothers — Will (14), Drew (13)and Garet (6).

Reetz becomes the first Nebraskahigh school player since 1996 to beselected in the first five rounds of thedraft. Bellevue East pitcher BuddyCarlyle was drafted in the second roundthat year by the Cincinnati Reds.

Reetz batted .486 and drove in 37runs for the Class B Titans this spring. He also belted eight home runs and hada 2.21 ERA as the team’s closer.

The 18-year-old, who recently wasnamed the Gatorade Nebraska playerof the year, said he was surprised thatWashington was the team that selectedhim.

“I didn’t expect that at all,” hesaid. “But I’m pretty fired up about itbecause they’ve got some really goodplayers.”

In addition to young stars such asBryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals already have someone intheir organization Reetz knows. DrewWard, a 2013 third-round selectionwho is playing Class A ball this season, played along with Reetz on a USA Base-ball showcase team.

“I feel thankful and blessed that Iwas selected in the draft,” Reetz said.“Now we’ll see what happens fromhere.”

Pelini wasn’t yet sure if the 6-foot-2,205-pound receiver would join thefootball team in Lincoln for summerconditioning workouts next week.

“We’re ready for him to come,”Pelini said.

Harrison, who watched the draftfrom the MLB Network studio in NewJersey Thursday, could not be reachedfor comment. Harrison’s adviser, RobMartin, declined an interview requestFriday morning.

The deadline for drafted players tosign professional contracts is July 18.

A Milwaukee front office executiveacknowledged Thursday night thatsigning the outfielder from Lee’s Sum-mit, Missouri, is not a certainty.

Bruce Seid, director of amateurscouting for the Brewers, told report-ers Thursday that he viewed draftingHarrison as an “opportunity” becauseof the prospect’s potential. But noth-ing’s guaranteed.

“We know it’s probably going to bea tougher sign,” Seid said, “but at thesame time, you have to take oppor-tunities like this. If we can make itwork, we’ll make it work.”

Area scout Drew Anderson, who let-tered with the Nebraska baseball pro-gram from 2001 to 2003, will work onMilwaukee’s behalf to try to persuadeHarrison to sign a deal. Seid plannedto speak with Harrison on Friday.

The Brewers have been allotteda total of $7.6 million (ninth-most

among MLB teams) to use on signingbonuses for all of the players theydraft within the first 10 rounds. It’slikely that they’ll offer Harrison morethan $1.1 million, the predeterminedsigning bonus value assigned to theNo. 50 pick.

Seid certainly had plenty of positivethings to say about Harrison’s poten-tial.

“I don’t ever want to put names to aplayer, but All-Star comparisons havecome up on him,” Seid said. “He hasa chance to play center field. He hasgood instincts out there, his stridesare outstanding. He’s got a plus arm,he’s got plus raw power and his speedis above average. It’s just like any-thing: It’s about playing the game, get-

ting enough at-bats and being patientin watching him develop.”

Milwaukee used its 41st overallpick to draft shortstop Jacob Gate-wood, a high school player fromClovis, California. Gatewood, a USCbaseball recruit, may have dropped abit, too.

The franchise’s general manger,Doug Melvin, said Thursday that theBrewers didn’t want to let Gatewoodor Harrison slide for much longer onthat first day.

“If you don’t take them early, you’renot going to get them,” Melvin said.“They’re just going to go to school.”
