On the north shore of the San Franciscopeninsula is Fisherman's Wharf, bustlingharbor of the city's fishing fleet, manned forthe most part by Americans of Italian descent.A trip around the city is hardly completewithout seeing this busy and intriguing mart.It is all the more exciting if you happen tobe there when the boats come in with theirday's catch, to see and hear the dealers andfishermen haggle over prices. Even if the fleetis out there is plenty of activity to fascinatethe visitor—net mending by some of the fisher-men left behind painting and repairingof boats by others.Thousands of tourists visit this romantichaven each year. An added treat is to boarda Powell Street cable car at Union Square andride up Powell Street past Nob Hill, along theedge of Chinatown, to Fisherman's Wharf atthe foot of Taylor Street at the Embarcadero. There are sidewalk stands displaying shellfishand other seafood delicacies. Freshly caughtcrabs are boiling in the big iron cauldronsat the curb, to be eaten there or taken awayby the purchaser. Tourists, of course, preferthe enjoyment of dining in the famous sea-food restaurants with the assurance that theirfavorite dish is prepared by master chefs.
Famed Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, where one may dine in famous seafood restaurants while watching the tall-mastedtrawlers jostle the tiny boats of the crab fishermen. Historic Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill is seen in the distance.
