WORLD HERITAGE. In 2001 Falun was added by Unesco to the World Heritage List. This means that Falun is regarded as being of such outstanding value for all of humankind that it must be preserved for the future.

”Sweden stands and falls with Kopparberget”The Swedish Council of the Realm, 1630s

Falun Mine has been of great significance for the deve-lopment of Sweden. For hundreds of years, copper from Kopparberget in Falun was shipped all over the globe. Mining was being done here a thousand years ago.

“Sweden stands and falls with Kopparberget.” This is what was said about Falun Mine, which was Sweden’s and also Europe’s biggest copper producer in the 17th cen-tury. Falun Mine was regarded as Sweden’s treasure chest and put Falun on the world map. The mine and its copper helped to give Sweden its status as a great power.

The thousand-year history of the mine is told in a completely new exhibition in the Mine Museum. In 2001 parts of Falun were

designated by Unesco as a World Heritage site, which means that the area, including Falun Mine, is of such historic value that it must be preserved for posterity. There are over 1000 World Heritage sites in the world today, 15 of them in Sweden. Examples of other places with this status are the Great Wall of China, the pyramids of Egypt and the Taj Mahal in India.

Welcome to Falun Mine – part of Falun World Heritage!

Kåre the goatdiscovered Falun MineBefore the mine existed, local farmers let their animals graze in the area where the mine is today. One evening Kåre the goat came home with red stains on his horns. The farmer followed Kåre and observed how the goat rubbed its horns against the reddish ground. The farmer started digging in the ground, and when he reached down to the rock he saw something gleaming – a rich vein of ore had been found. You can buy Kåre the goat and other souvenirs in the Mine shop.

Red paint and slag Falun sausage, copper and red houses. Three things with their origin in Falun which have beco-me a part of Sweden. The red paint that decorates so many houses in our country exists thanks to Falun Mine. The iron ochre from the mine has been used since the 16th century and is regarded as the paint that gave Sweden its colour. This sum-mer you can see the photo exhibition “Red Paint and Slag – Contemporary Photography from Our Collections” in the Loft in the Mine Museum.

Come along on an adventure down Falun Mine. Walk through the winding passages and experience the mighty chambers.

A visit down the mine is an adventure, some- thing you must experience! Join a guided tour in the part of the mine that goes back to the 17th century. During the tour you can hear more about the history of the mine. You also gain insight into the hard life of the miners in the dark and dangerous underground environ-ment. You will hear the fascinating story of the miner Fat Mats, whose well-preserved body was found in the mine 42 years after he had been killed by a rock fall.

It is dirty and damp at some places in the

underground tours, so it is good to have hardwearing clothes and shoes. There are many steps in the mine and children have to be at least 3 years old to visit the mine.

NEW!For those who are unwilling or unable to walk down the mine we have something new this year. In the Mine Museum you can watch a film which gives you the chance to experience the mine underground without walking down.

FAT MATS. In 1719, when workers were clearing a shaft where there had once been a cave-in, they found the body of a young miner. The man appeared to have been killed in a recent accident, but no one se-emed to recognize him. When the body was brought up above ground, an old woman recognized him as the man she had been engaged to when young, Fat Mats, who had suddenly disappeared 42 years earlier.

This summer you can enjoy the photo exhibition “Red Paint and Slag – Contemporary Photography from Our Collections”.

At the end of the 16th century there was a grow-ing demand for copper, and by the middle of the 17th century the mine was producing more than two thirds of all the copper in Europe. This was the biggest industrial workplace in the country, at times with over 1000 men working in the mine. The copper that was mined became coins, roofing plate, trinkets and household utensils.

Copper from Falun Mine decorated the roof of the splendid palace of Versailles. Falun was regarded as an innovative town with an interna-tional character, attracting more and more

people. The influx meant that Falun was the second biggest town in Sweden in the 17th cen-tury The mine had a great influence on the deve-lopment of the country. This was where Sweden’s first emergency hospital opened, and this was where the foundation was laid for today’s state alcohol monopoly. Falun and the mine affected the shaping of today’s Swedish industrial society.

Come and experience an exciting and im-portant part of Sweden’s history and explore the historic area around the mine.

Copper from Falun which affected a whole world

FALUN, SWEDEN AND THE WORLD

Falun Mine and its copper were important for financing Sweden’s period as a great power. In the 17th century it was known as “the treasury and cashbox of the kingdom”.

THE DEED OF EXCHANGE FROM 1288. It is uncertain when the history of Falun Mine began, but the oldest written document about the mine is from 1288. The document is a deed of exchange confirming that Bishop Petrus Elofsson in Västerås had the right to redeem an eighth share of Kopparberget, which at that time was called Tiskasjöberg. Both King Magnus Ladulås and the Archbishop of Uppsala, along with three other bishops, signed the deed.

Elsborg, the wooden part of townApart from the mine, there is much more to ex- perience at the Falun World Heritage site. The well-preserved district of Elsborg with its wooden buildings makes for an attractive walk from the centre of Falun to the mine. Here you can see some of Falun’s oldest buildings, including the smallest miner’s cottage in Falun, Bult Karl-Erik’s house from the 17th century. Seven people lived here in a space of 10 m2 around 1900.

Stroll in the old, well-preserved Elsborg neighbourhood with its red-painted miners’ cottages.

Operations at Falun Mine were expanded from the first half of the 18th cent- ury to include iron production. The company, known as Bergslaget, founded or bought several iron mines, smelting houses and forges during the coming centuries, to become one of Sweden’s biggest iron producers.

Follow the Way of the Iron from the mine in Vintjärn to the smelting house in Åg and on to the hammer forge in Korså. The iron ore from Vintjärn was also transported northwards to the smelting house and forge in Svartnäs. The beautifully located industrial monuments can be visited all year round. There are signposted walking trails and information about bygone life around the mines, the smelting houses and the forges. Information about the trails can be found at: www.falugruva.se/historia/jar-nets-vag.

In Korså there is a small exhibition about the forge, and in the manor house there is a cafeteria serving coffee, bread and simple lunches.

See www.korsabruk.se for opening hours.
