Second Crime Prevention Handbook in the WorksAlmost one year ago, the Mississauga Crime Prevention Association published its first CrimePrevention Handbook. Ten thousand copies of this valuable resource were distributed to homesand businesses in the community at absolutely no charge. For residents, it offered tips on suchissues as home security, alarms, travel safety and identity theft. For the workplace, there wasadvice on general business security, developing a security strategy, and crime preventionthrough environmental design. Needless to say, the Handbook was extremely well received.

To compliment and augment the first Handbook, the Mississauga Crime Prevention Associationwill be publishing a second version, which will be distributed in early 2007. Once again 10,000copies will be printed to contribute to the superior safety record of our community. The project is currently in the advertising sales phase.

If your company would like premium print exposure in a high quality publication and supportcommunity safety at the same time, please contact George Kamstra 905-615-6272 or AndyGoodchild at 905-580-5815.

Crossroads Youth AcademyHelps Build SuccessThe Crossroads program is designed to help young people stay safe, avoid trouble and make good decisions in order to lay the foundation for a successful future. Workshop topics include personal safety, positive relationships, Internet & computer safety, drug awareness and counterfeit detection. New features this year include CPR training and certification and a workshop on dispute resolution. The International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners recognized the Program as the BestCommunity Program in November 2005.

Crossroads is organized by the Mississauga Crime Prevention Association but is a true communitypartnership. Presenters include representatives from Peel Regional Police Crime PreventionServices Unit, the Bank of Canada, the HEAL network and the Peel Paramedics Association. GTA Fare Cardcoming in 2007The Greater Toronto Transportation Authority(GTTA) announced that they will be launchingthe GTA Fare Card in the middle of 2007. The GTAFare Card is an important step toward creatingmore convenient and efficient public transitfrom Hamilton in the west, to Oshawa in theeast. The GTA Fare Card, when operational, willmake it easier and faster for commuters totransfer between various municipal transitservices and the GO Transit system.

Here’s how it will work: The fare card will operate much like a debit card or telephonecard. Transit riders will scan the card uponentering and leaving the transit system theyboard, and the GTA Fare Card will calculate howfar they have travelled, which transit systemsthey’ve used, and the total fare. That sum willbe deducted from the card account. The accountcan be topped up at wickets at train and bus stations, selected retail outlets, via pre-authorized payments by telephone or the Internet.

Currently work is underway to develop an official name for the fare card, with the hopesthat the card and system will be designed andfully operational by mid-2007. The fare cardwill be launched on four Mississauga busroutes that link to Meadowvale and CooksvilleGO Transit Stations; on two Go Transit stationson the Milton GO line; and at Union Station for GO Transit and Toronto Transit Commission(TTC) riders. It is expected that the GTA FareCard will be fully implemented across the GTA and Hamilton by 2010.

In The Know About SnowEvery year, the City and its residents face the same challenge of dealing with snow clearing andgetting through the winter season. The City of Mississauga establishes snow clearing standardstaking into consideration public safety and budget availability. It is important to note that levelsof snow clearing service differ from municipality to municipality.

When snow is forecasted the City’s Transportation and Works Department begins coordinating its crews and more than 200 pieces of equipment such as snow plows and salt spreaders. We clear over 5,500 lane km (3,430 miles) of roads and 1,260 km (777 miles) of sidewalks.

When clearing operations are underway we need your cooperation. We ask our residents to:

• ensure that you are prepared if you know that there is a major snowfall forecasted• remove parked cars from the street prior to and during plowing or clearing operations• clear snow and ice from sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall to ensure that they

are safe for all residents• help others, especially seniors and disabled persons to clear their driveways and sidewalks• do not place snow on the roadways• be patient and thoughtful

The City is out there working on your behalf. A little consideration and common sensecan go a long way when weather conditions are difficult.

To find out more about our snow clearing operations, you can e-mail [email protected] call 905-615-3000 and select Option 1 for snow clearing updates and information.

Trail EtiquetteMississauga is home to an extensive multi-usetrail network that links our beautiful parks andgreen spaces across the City. Because trailsare used by pedestrians, joggers, in-lineskaters and cyclists, there are some etiquetterules that all users should follow in order to makethe trails safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Always keep to the right of the trail and pass slower movers on the left. Faster movers should give an audible warning when approaching a pedestrian or slowermover from behind, such as ringing a bell, honking a horn or yelling “I’m coming by on your left.”

• Keep dogs on a leash

• Respect nature and private property

• Do not litter

With more than 170 kilometres of trails and trail facilities located in every ward,Mississauga’s trail network is truly the City’slargest outdoor community centre. If youwould like more information about the trailsystem or would like a copy of a trail map, please visit www.mississauga.ca/cyclingor call 905-615-3200 ext. 5346.

New Transit Service -Calling Out Stops InitiativeOn Monday, October 23, Mississauga Transitoperators began calling out bus stops to riderson their bus routes. Operators will use thepublic address system on the bus to announcemajor intersections and major destinations, such as a shopping mall and transfer locations.Calling out major stops is a new initiative byMississauga Transit to provide enhanced levels of accessible service to its customers.

Underpass Mural Art Project-Glen Erin Trail and Erin Mills Parkway

Erin Mills is known to residents and visitors for its beautiful trails that meander through neigh-bourhoods, schools, woodlots and creeks. One of the most popular trails is the Glen Erin Trailwhich goes from The Collegeway at Mississauga Road to Folkway Drive. This past summer, theCity’s cycling liaison, myself and the Region met to discuss an exciting mural art project for theunderpass of Glen Erin Trail and Erin Mills Parkway. An agreement was reached and a younglocal artist has been attained in partnership with the Region to paint an interpretative wallmural on the underpass walls to reflect the natural area and the trail users.

What we Clear FirstWhen a snowfall is less than 8 cm (3"):

1. Major roads are salted.2. Residential streets are sanded if required.

When a snowfall is more than 8 cm (3"):

1. Major roads are first plowed and then salted.2. Residential streets are plowed and sanded.

Snow clearing operations for roads are done according to a Priority Route System. First we clearmajor roads to achieve bare pavement. These roads are the key routes for emergency vehicles, public transportation and the majority of street traffic. For example, Hurontario, Dundas,Burnhamthorpe.

Once the major roads are clear, our snow clearing crews move onto residential streets which are the majority of city roads. We may not be able to achieve bare pavement on residential streets, however our objective is to make them passable and safe to allow motorists to reach major roads. All residential streets receive the same level of service from their designated Works Yard but keep in mind that temperature and weather conditions may vary from one area to another within the City.

Lastly we clear cul de sacs, bends and dead-end streets. Their configuration presents a uniquechallenge for snow operations. For cul de sacs, snow is generally pushed to the centre for storage. For bends and dead ends, snow is piled to the side of the road. Bus stops are also cleared at theend of a snow clearing operation.

Credit Valley Cancer Care Expanding

I have always had a concern around the issueof youth and gang violence, that is why I serveas Vice-Chair on the Region of Peel YouthViolence Prevention Committee. The Committeedeveloped an overall Youth Violence PreventionStrategy for the Region of Peel. On June 15,2006 I took part in a forum that gave serviceproviders and stakeholders an opportunity todialogue about this important issue and tocreate meaningful strategies to prevent youthviolence from happening in Peel. In October,2006 the Peel Youth Violence PreventionCommittee presented their report titled“Towards a Bright Future for Peel Youth”. The report is available on the Region of Peel website atwww.region.peel.on.ca/health/health-status-report/youth-violence/index.htm

In my continuing role as Chair and working tobring inclusive, quality programming andresources to the youth of Mississauga West, I have spearheaded a Youth Drop-In Collaborativewhich includes representation from the City of Mississauga Recreation and Parks Division,Peel Living, the Rotary Club of MississaugaWest, the Boys and Girls Club of Peel, ErinMills United Church and Peel Regional Police. I will continue to work hard on this issue andensure that Peel Region and the City ofMississauga continue to be a safe community for our youth.

It’s here! The 4th linear accelerator for radiationtherapy treatment at Credit Valley’s regionalcancer centre arrived at the end of Septemberand will be operational early in 2007.

A linear accelerator is a device that generateshigh-energy X-rays and electrons for cancertreatment. The high-energy X-ray beamspenetrate directly to the source of the cancersparing healthy superficial tissues, whereaselectrons penetrate only superficially and candestroy healthy tissue. X rays and electrons of different energies allow the radiationoncologist to customize the treatment according to a patient’s specific needs.

The linear accelerator is capable of rotatingaround a patient lying on a treatment couch, treating the tumor from several angles. Thisallows the delivery of high doses of radiationto the tumor while reducing the dose to thenormal surrounding tissues.

When The Carlo Fidani Peel Regional CancerCentre opened in June 2005, it was equippedwith three fully operational Varian linearaccelerators. This fiscal year we will complete30,000 treatments using those machines.

With the addition of the 4th linear accelerator,we anticipate we’ll complete 34,000 radiationtreatments on some 1600 patients in fiscal year

2007/08. Because of the population growth inour city and the regional municipalities servedby the cancer centre, we will soon need thefifth and sixth linear accelerators at CreditValley. Luckily the cancer centre was designedto hold six linear accelerators based on thepopulation projections and the need for cancer treatment of this kind.

The Carlo Fidani Peel Rergional Cancer Centreat Credit Valley is currently serving a populationbase of 1.7 million which includes patients living in two Local Health Integration Networks(LHINs) – Mississauga Halton LHIN and CentralWest LHIN.

Intensification simply means finding room forthe large portion of our growing populationwithin our existing neighbourhoods. Throughintensification, residents have a wider rangeof housing choices, increased conveniencewith closer access to employment, amenitiesincluding schools, shopping, and public transit – everything that contributes to thequality of life in our community.

Intensification does not mean increasing aproposed development’s density (the number

of residential units) without taking into consideration adequate parking facilities, traffic congestion, available community services, water and wastewater capacity, appropriate urban design and, most importantly, if the development is compatible with the surrounding community.

Smart Bus pilot project on 30 buses serving

the Hurontario Street corridor? The technology

on these innovative buses provides Mississauga

Transit with the information they need to plan

and deliver better customer service, including

Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems,

using Global Positioning System (GPS)

technology to locate all vehicles and allow

real-time communication of schedule

adherence to operations supervisors,

Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) to
