The Northern Virginia Rain Barrel Program is up and running for 2010! Learn how to har- vest and use rooftop runoff at a regional rain barrel workshop or sale. A rain barrel is a modified 50-gallon food- grade polyethylene barrel placed under roof downspouts to collect water. Rain barrels help the environment by reducing our dependence on municipal water (therefore protecting natural resources), allevi- ates overstressed storm drains, and helps you save money (use the collected rainwater to water lawns and gardens or wash your car instead of turning on the hose!). Make your own rain barrel at a workshop and learn how to build, install and maintain a rain barrel. Cost is $52, including a $2 processing fee. Premade rain barrels can also be purchased for $62, including a $2 processing fee. Registration and prepayment is required; go to www.arlingtonenvironment.org/barrel.php. The 2010 Census: Easy, Important and Safe The 2010 Census will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000, and tell us how we’ve evolved as a country. Census data affects how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local govern- ments. It is vital that everyone in the United States be counted. The 2010 Census form is one of the shortest Census forms in history – only 10 questions - and takes about 10 minutes to com- plete. Households will be asked to provide key demographic infor- mation, including: whether a housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the residence; and the names, genders, ages, races and relationships of others living in the household. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. U.S. households will receive the form by mail or hand delivery this month. The initial form package, which will consist of the 2010 Census form, a cover letter, and a postage-paid return envelope, will be delivered this month in areas where the U.S. Postal Service delivers. Census workers will deliver forms March 1 through April 30, in most other areas. Responding immediately to the 2010 Census form is the most efficient way to complete the Census. Census workers will visit households that do not return the forms to take a count in person. For more information visit www.census.gov. The George Mason Scholastic Bowl team con-cludes its impressive 23-0 season with a state cham-pionship title after breezing through the double-elimina-tion tournament at William and Mary on Saturday.

As throughout most of the season, the Mustangs’ vic-tories seemed almost effort-less. The closest margin of victory in the final four games against the commonwealth’s best schools was 85 points.

The team was led by junior captain Asher Morse and starting seniors Katie Buenneke, Jonathan Ross and junior Anuraag Sensharma. Contributions in the tournament were also made by Mary Ma, a senior, and juniors Jakob Hand, Ross Wilson and Crawford Taylor.

The state title is Mason’s fourth and along with 3 runner-up finishes, the George Mason squad has participated in the final game in 7 of the last 9 years.

GMHS Scholastic Bowl Team State Champions

The 2009-10 George Mason Virginia Scholarship Bowl State Champions are (l to r): Jakob Hand, Ross Wilson, Crawford Taylor, Mary Ma, Anuraag Sensharma, Katie Buenneke, Jonathan Ross, Asher Morse (captain) and James Scharff (faculty sponsor).
