Artist in ResidenceRobert Townsend

CSUN Department of Cinema and Television Arts is fortunate to have the legendary Robert Townsend serving as Artist in Residence this academic year. He will serve as Directing Mentor for all Senior Film capstone projects.

A passionate visionary, trailblazer and Hollywood icon, Robert Townsend transcends any medium he touches. Whether he’s performing stand up, acting, writing, directing, producing, or running a television network, his magic and versatile

talent is undeniable. A Hollywood-pioneer well ahead of his time, Townsend, a Chicago native is often referred to as one of the “Godfathers of the Independent Film World.”

Robert observed a lack of good work available in the Hollywood film industry for black actors. Wanting to do something to fill this void, but without a formal film education or outside funding, Robert Townsend stepped behind the camera and the “independent film-maker” was born. He wrote, directed, produced and starred in his film, Hollywood Shuffle, revolutionizing the way independent films were created.

With over 30 years in the business, he has made an indelible mark in Hollywood with an extensive list of credits and working with some of the top talent in Hollywood including Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones, Alfre Woodard, Lou Gossett, Jr., Keenan Ivory Wayans and Chris Tucker, just to name a few. Robert was responsible for discovering many of Hollywood’s A-List talent before they became household names and was the mastermind behind many of Hollywood’s favorite and best-remembered movies and hit series including The Five Heartbeats, The Meteor Man, Townsend Television, Partners in Crime, and The Parent ‘Hood. Robert’s body of work has been seen on various networks including Disney, Fox, NBC, HBO, WB, The N, USA, Nickelodeon and MTV.

Always looking to give back and make an even bigger impact on the movie industry and the community as a whole, Robert Townsend has created his 501 (c) 3 non-profit, The Robert Townsend Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to open the doors to new and underrepresented artists and create a model to showcase the new filmmakers to the world.

This writer, actor, director, producer and industry CEO has received 30 NAACP Image Award nominations during his prolific career. “I am truly blessed to do what I do,” he says. “As I write this next chapter of my life, I will bring my ‘A’ game like never before, with more zest, more passion, more vision and more love.”

While he has many accolades none are more important than his family. His four children are the center of his heart and despite his demanding schedule, Robert makes sure he spends quality time with his son, Max, and his three daughters, Alexia, Sierra and Skylar.

Thursday Nights at the CSUN CinemathequeBuster Keaton RetrospectiveKeaton and Beyond: Cameos; Television

and Film (1965), 20 min.Film is a 1965 short film written by Samuel Beckett, his only screenplay. Beckett’s original choice for the lead—referred to only as “O”—was Charlie Chaplin, but his script never reached him. Both Beckett and the director Alan Schneider were interested in Zero Mostel and Jack MacGowran. However, the former was unavailable and the latter, who accepted at first, became unavailable due to his role in a “Hollywood epic.” Beckett then suggested Buster Keaton. Schneider promptly flew to Los Angeles and persuaded Keaton to accept the role along with “a handsome fee for less than three weeks’ work.”Armer Screening Room (Manzanita Hall, Rm. 100)Thurs. 7 p.m. / Doors open at 6:45 p.m.Admission is free and open to the public.

Become a Patron of the Mike Curb College There are so many ways to contribute to the longevity

and expansion of all arts, media, and communication forms at CSUN, whether through avenues such as endowments,

memorial giving, estate planning or other means.

Individual GivingA driving passion throughout Jean Picker Firstenberg’s career has been to provide women and under-represented students an opportunity to pursue careers in film and television. A current member of the Board of Trustees of California State University, Ms. Firstenberg spent almost 28 years as President and CEO of the American Film Institute (AFI) and upon her retirement in 2007 received the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award for service to the Institute. Her continued passion for education and cinema, along with her desire to help diversify the entertainment community, and help low-income students attain a high-quality education, has led her, her family and friends to create the JPF Family Scholarship Endowment at CSUN to benefit students in the highly-acclaimed Department of Cinema and Television Arts. In addition to the scholarship, Ms. Firstenberg looks forward to being a mentor to her recipients.

Memorial GivingProfessor Emeritus of Communication Studies Christie Logan was a pioneer for performance theory. As a CSUN Professor for over 30 years, she was one of the disciplinary scholars who developed theory and practice beyond the traditional, historical approaches to poetics to the broader and more socially relevant Performance Studies. As artistic director of Performance Ensemble she inspired and guided students to adapt and direct narrative and poetry for the stage. In memory of his wife of 40 years, Jim Hasenauer, also Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies, created the Christie Logan Endowment for Performance Ensemble. This endowment will support students interested in using group performance as a way of knowing and experiencing the world. If you would like to make a contribution to this endowment in memory or Christie Logan, please contact Desiree Gagnon, Assistant Director of Development at (818) 677-4269, or by email at [email protected].

Estate PlanningThe first star of CSUN’s early opera program, Shigemi Matsumoto ’68, achieved international fame in a performing career spanning more than two decades. Since the late 1980s, she has devoted her work to music education. In 2016, she received the university’s highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Marty Stark landed a job at Columbia Artists Management, Inc. right out of law school, as a result of negotiating his wife’s contract with CAMI. He was later responsible for bringing high tech companies to New York City, and as an entrepreneur investor and consultant, helping turn around a number of companies to profitability. The couple met while students at San Fernando Valley State College (CSUN) and have been married for 50 years. Committed to the development of future outstanding vocal performers, Shigemi and Marty have established a vocal arts scholarship at CSUN, in honor of Shigemi’s parents Morrichi and Suki Matsumoto, and very generously included the university in their estate plans so their scholarship fund will live in perpetuity.
