President’s Message

Well, summer is almost over and it’s time to gear up for another busy year at RVCC. In the past few months, the follow-ing things have occurred. Colin Nicholson provided the annual review of the RVCC financial statement, which is available to anyone for perusal upon request. Nick Lisney arranged the pur-chase of new soccer uniforms. We renewed our contract with Pepsi. By the time this is published, I expect we will have a signed agreement in place with the air rifle association. We have adopted a new method for delivering the Reflector, by hiring a Special Olympian to deliver all Reflectors. We have closed the separate Reflector bank account and merged it into the RVCC general accounts. We had an active spring sports season – see elsewhere in this Reflector for details on our river of champions. Mike Schultz and Janelle Cancade-White and many others put on a very successful spring carnival. And now it is time for fall sports and programs.

One topic that has arisen this year is the question of lo-gos. Many community centres have recently adopted a single logo for all of their communication vehicles, and in particular, their sports teams. The idea is to create a unified look for all pro-grams within a community centre, that will enhance the visual recognition of the community centre’s activities and perhaps add to the sense of community ownership and pride in those activi-ties. Lord Roberts has its Terriers image; Crescentwood has its Grizzlies bear paw image, River Heights has its Cardinal image, and so on. Riverview has not adopted that a unified look. River-view has a logo on the front of the building and on the masthead of the Reflector and Osborne South Bugle. Riverview teams have traditionally been known as the “Rangers”, but there is no visual image of what a “ranger” is or looks like. Riverview’s hockey program has traditionally used the logo (and colours) of the New York Rangers, replacing the words New York with Riverview. The Riverview soccer uniforms that were just pur-chased simply have a letter “R” on them. The mini-soccer t-shirts do not use any RVCC logo. The basketball jerseys do not use any RVCC logo, but the championship hoodies use a modified version of the logo on the front of the building. And of course our Jackrabbit ski program needs to know what logo to use if it wants to purchase toques! Let’s find a winning look that all of our programs and activities can get behind! As a result, the Board of Directors decided to hold a logo contest. We want you to submit logo ideas for RVCC. Just drop off your design at the canteen by September 15. Then we want you to help us choose the winning design. Come to the meeting on September 18, and vote on the best logo for RVCC (it could be one of the existing logos, or a new one)! We sure hope to see you there! Tom McMahon

The 9-10 year old girls basketball team won all 10 of their games this spring, scoring 294 points for and only 97 points against! (Last spring, the 9-10 year old girls also won the spring city championship with an undefeated spring season, but with a couple of tie games. Only two girls were on both of those champion teams. Both teams featured a nice mix of Riverview, River Heights and Wolseley girls. The 9 year old boys basketball team also won their spring league city championship. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING On February 11th and 12th, 2006 a small but feisty gaggle of Jackrabbit Ski Club members and their coaches headed out to Kenora's Mount Evergreen Trail System to represent Riverview at the Cross-Country Ski Association's Provincial Championships. Over challenging and hilly terrain, stiff competition was faced from many larger and more established ski clubs including Red River Nordic, Kenora Nordic, Whiteshell and Boundary Trails. Undaunted, three Riverview Jackrab-bits entered a total of six races over the two days of competition and walked away with no less than FIVE medals! Nordic Skiing an Awesome Habit for Riverview Jackrabbits!

It's not that jackrabbits are prone to bragging- but then their coaches are not known to be shy...

The uncommonly modest Riverview

Jackrabbit Ski Club "Coaches Association" is delighted to observe that after only two years of operation, some of our athletes are already moving upward and integrating into more competitive ski-racing clubs such as Red River Nordic and the local River Rat club. We're proud of all of our home grown "Racing Rabbits" and rest assured we'll continue to turn out and cheer for you at your races, cowbells in hand. Good luck with your future skiing endeavors.

For those ever-energetic returning jackrab-bits or those wishing to join our games-based "learn to ski and have fun" program for kids aged 5 to 12 (and their parents), please note that winter sport registration at RVCC is al-ready upon us (believe it or not) and is sched-uled for August 30th, September 6th and 9th. As in previous years the Ski Club will be lim-iting registration to approximately fifty par-ticipants due to a desire to maintain the high quality of the program. If you're thinking of "jumpin' in" please be aware that last season we reached our magic number quickly and were forced to close registration before our actual start date in November. Winter Is Great - Happy Skiing!

Summer in “The Biz” by Barbara gerrie

Osborne South Business Improvement Zone has been busy place in the last few months. Not only are there new places and faces on south Osborne, but the Streetscaping committee has been busy with clean up of graf-fiti, garbage pickup, weeding, and washing of the banners. Our flower program has featured more hanging baskets, as well as the sidewalk planters. You may have seen our summer stu-dent, Andrew, hard at work with the weed eater and paint brush. We also have to thank the Urban Green Team program for partial funding towards street maintenance.

The Farmers Market at the Leisure Cen-tre parking lot is every Saturday until the fall, from 9:00 to 3:00, featuring not only produce, but other homemade items.

Osborne South has become home to many notable restaurants within a few blocks radius. We recently welcomed Bistro 71/4 to Osborne and Beresford Ave., across from Lux Sole. For a complete listing of our varied eater-ies, go to www.osbornesouth.biz.

We are planning an advertising booklet showing all the restaurants, shopping and ser-vices available in your neighbourhood. These will be delivered to all Riverview and Lord Rob-erts residents in September, and is similar to the one distributed in 2004.

Many residents and business owners have been observing with great interest the MTS Call Centre that is being built next to McDonald’s and the Red River Co Op Gas Bar. Information we have received indicates up to 800 new people working in our area.

The BIZ wishes to extend a big thank you to residents and visitors for your support of our members. Together we can keep our neighbourhood vibrant and interesting.

PILATES/YOGA CLASSES to begin again Oct. 7/06 Many of you have called or asked about these classes: Here are some answers to your ques-tions: What is Pilates? The Pilates method is one of the best forms of core strengthening exercises. It originally was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. It has been improved and modified over the years to reflect our increased knowledge of physiology and movement. It focuses on a series of exer-cises designed to strengthen the entire body with emphasis on the abdominals and lower back muscles. Also on posture, breathing and body awareness. Do I have to be super fit to do it? People of all shapes and sizes can do it. Will I lose weight? This is not known to be a weight loss program. However, you will tone and strengthen. Will I injure myself? Instruction is easy to follow, detailed, and added to each week building strength to avoid injury. The teachers need to know about old or existing injuries in order to adjust or omit certain posi-tions for the student. What kind of Yoga do you teach? I teach basic Hatha Yoga- combining postures with breathing. Can anyone do it? Yes, anyone can benefit from the postures and relaxation exercises of Yoga. How long have you taught Yoga? I have been teaching for over 30 years. How does the combination class work? The combination class begins with Pilates at 9:30 am for 45 minutes and Yoga for 45 minutes until 11:00am. Pilates to tone and strengthen. Yoga to stretch, breathe and relax. Can I take just Pilates or Yoga? Yes, however we encourage you to experience the benefits of both. If you have more questions please contact Samantha at 475-9937. If you have been thinking about a fitness pro-gram that will work for you, please join us. You won't regret it!

The Great RVCC Logo Contest!!

The Riverview Community Centre is holding a logo contest. You are invited to submit de-signs. The winning entry will win a prize! Why a new logo? At present, Riverview has 2 different official logos: Our corporate Logo (on the side of the building) and our Hockey Logo (NY Rang-ers.) For various reasons, both of these have been deemed unsuitable for other sports pro-grams and at present, we have several sports teams that have no logo on their uniforms. Each time new uniforms or clothing is pur-chased, different looks are adopted. The RVCC Board of Directors would like to pro-mote a sense of unity and identity by moving towards a single design that would easily identify all of our participants across various community club programs. How will the logo be used? The logo will be used on future purchases of soccer and basketball uniforms, cross-country skiing and all other clothing (other than hockey uniforms). The Board may con-sider using the logo to replace the existing logo on the front of the RVCC. How can you enter? You are invited to submit a logo design and drop it off at the canteen at RVCC, with your name, street address, email address, age and the sports you participate in (or would be interested in participating in) at the club. Or, if it is in a digital format, send it to [email protected] . Both Kids and Adults are welcome to participate!

If you simply want to tell the Board to use one of the existing logos, or that you support one of the logos (http://www.riverviewcc.ca/logos.htm) already submitted, please send an email to [email protected]! What is the deadline? Only submissions received before end of day on September 15, 2006 will be ac-cepted. What is the prize? The RVCC will pay the registration fee for one child in one of the sports regis-tered through the RVCC or a cash prize of $125, at the winner’s option. Where can we see the entries? Entries will be posted on the bulletin board at RVCC after September 15 and, to the extent possible, on the web site at www.riverviewcc.ca. How will the winning entry be se-lected? The winning entry will be selected at the Board meeting on September 25, 2006, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Everyone from the community is welcome to attend to cast their vote! You must attend the meeting to vote!

Q. I have great vision but I have night blind-ness and I'm interested in why that happens and if there is any remedy.

A. This is actually a diffi-cult question to answer without asking you sev-eral questions first. There are a multitude of possible reasons why someone might have dif-ficulty with their night vi-sion. The potential causes range from something as simple as mild nearsightedness, which can be corrected with glasses to a variety of eye diseases, some of which are treatable and others that are not. In order to help me deter-mine the cause I would need to know the extent

and duration of the prob-lem. Is the night vision so poor that it is debili-tating or is it just a bit problematic for driving? Has it been this way all of your life or is the on-set more recent?

Probably the most widely known cause of vision loss at night is the eye disease called retini-tis pigmentosa. This eye disease renders a

person virtually blind at night and eventually causes tunnel vision and legal blindness. How-ever, it is quite rare and there is usually some family history of it. It af-fects males much more than females and typi-cally affects people in their early twenties.

Another eye disease that can cause poor vision at night is glaucoma. This "silent thief of sight" is symptomless until the damage is quite exten-sive. Typically one of the first symptoms is poor night vision. Again, glau-coma is relatively rare, although it is certainly more prevalent than retinitis pigmentosa. Glaucoma can affect

people at any age, how-ever, it is more common to develop it after the age of forty.

There are several other eye diseases that cause problems but the most common cause of someone experiencing a relatively recent onset of poor vision at night is a change in their eyeglass prescription. A slight amount of blur may not be noticeable in good lighting but can be

amplified in low light conditions.

In the absence of any eye disease or spectacle prescription, night vision problems may be helped with non-prescription, yellow-tinted eye-glasses. The yellow tint helps to increase the contrast of objects and also filters out glare from oncoming headlights when driving.

The best advice I can give you or anyone else is to have your eyes ex-amined by an optome-trist. A history of any visual concerns, general health, and family history of eye disease is taken, followed by tests to see

if eyeglasses are neces-sary. And finally, a thor-ough examination of the health of your eyes is performed to check for

any signs of eye dis-ease.

Letters to the Editor A Note from the editor: Riverview has a city-wide reputation for being a vibrant, welcoming and friendly community. Those of us involved with the Reflector wish to further this reputation whenever possible. This is done not only by giving the community and its resi-dents a collective pat on the back, but also by noticing our past short-comings, and working to correct them the next time. In recent issues of the Reflector, we have published letters to the editor that I believe is performing the latter function. However, as more of a pre-emptive strike than anything, I feel that it is important to reiterate that the Reflector does not wish to be-come a community tabloid, and for neighbours to settle disputes among themselves, rather than bring us into it. Also, though we wish to refrain from playing censor as much as possible, it is still the right of the editors to shorten or refuse to pub-lish any material we believe to be inappropriate. Thank you in advance, Daniel Falloon and Tom McMahon, Reflector co-editors Spring Carnival We attended the Annual Spring Car-nival last night and after we came home I just couldn’t help think how lucky we are to be living in such a great, vibrant community. Upon further thought, I realized it’s not luck at all but hard work provided by all the great people in our area who spend many hours volunteering to make events like last evening hap-pen. Our whole family enjoyed the evening thoroughly from the penny carnival to the tattoos to the bouncy slide and everything in between. I appreciate how much work an event like this must require, not only the planning but the organizing of all the volunteers. Many thanks and bravo to the committee involved in putting the whole thing together and many

by all. Additional thanks to Erick for providing the movie. The kids loved it and we appreciated the break to enjoy a beverage (or two), catch up with neighbours and friends and listen to great live music. Cheers, Pam McWilliams Soccer Uniforms I have had great feed back from the coaches who received their uni-forms. A few of our teams are entered in the Children's Hospital Tournament and they will look great representing our club. I picked my uniforms up last night - I coach 10 year old girls and they were so excited. The parents commented on how put together and like a soccer team they looked. Don't know whether it was the uniforms or not but they won 4 - 0. I think Nick has done a great job and on behalf of the coaches I thank him. I think the players really look sharp representing our community and it also makes them proud which in turn makes us as coaches and parents proud. Arlene MacLennan, Soccer Convenor Looking for information We are now looking at the history of Riverview Community Centre and would like to honour all Past Presidents and Volunteer of the Years, etc. We would also like to find out important information such as: when did Riverview Community Centre open? If you know, please contact me through the Club at 452-9944, or at home at 284-4865. You may also reach me by e-mail at [email protected]. Thanks, Jim Falloon

Crosswalks on Osborne Tom McMahon inquired at the City what would be involved in getting a second lighted crosswalk on Osborne Street. Here is the reply the City sent: We observed the pedestrian activity across Osborne Street at Baltimore Road and at Beresford Avenue between 07:00 and 22:00 on May 3, 4 and 5, 2006. During the busiest 8 hours of pedestrian activity, there were: 80 pedestrian cross-ings at Baltimore Road, 31 of whom were delayed greater than 10 seconds; 125 pedestrian crossings at Beresford Avenue, 62 of whom were delayed greater than 10 seconds; 23 pedestrian crossings mid-block between Baltimore Road and Beresford Avenue; and of the 226 pedestrian crossings, 3 were ele-mentary school aged children and 5 were considered senior citizens. The level of pedestrian activity, delay and classification at Baltimore Road and at Beresford Avenue is 17% and 31%, respectively, of that which would nor-mally warrant the installation of a pedes-trian corridor. Assuming that the pedes-trians delayed more than 10 seconds would walk to the next block if a pedes-trian corridor were to be installed; the predicted combined level of crossing activity is 49% of that which would normally warrant the installation of a pedestrian corridor. Accordingly, the installation of a pedestrian corridor across Baltimore Road or Beresford Avenue is unwarranted at this time. Mr. McMahon proposes that 2 pedes-trian corridors be located across Osborne Street between the signalized intersec-tions of Morley Avenue and Jubilee Avenue, preferably one at Maplewood Avenue and one at Baltimore Road. This would produce a spacing of 203 m to 243 m between the pedestrian corridors and/or the signalized crosswalks. The cost of installation of 2 pedestrian corri-dors across Osborne Street and removal
