AbouT Great Lakes Theater

The mission of Great Lakes Theater, through its main

stage productions and its edu-cation programs, is to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience.

Since the company’s incep-tion in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but Great Lakes commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and pro-vides for the occasional mount-ing of new works that comple-ment the classical repertoire.

Classic theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, revel in eloquent language, preserve the traditions of diverse cultures and generate communal spirit. On its main stage and through its education pro-grams, GLT seeks to create visceral, immediate experiences for participants, asserting theater’s historic role as a vehicle for advancing the com-mon good and helping people make the joyful and meaningful connections between classic plays and their own lives.

The company’s commitment to classic theater is magnified in the educational programs that surround its productions. Since its inception, GLT has had a strong presence in area schools, bring-ing students to the theater for matinee perfor-mances and sending specially trained actor-teach-ers to the schools for weeklong residencies devel-oped to explore classic drama from a theatrical point of view. GLT is equally dedicated to enhanc-ing the theater experience for adult audiences through Surround, a series of community pro-grams that explore the themes of a main stage production. To this end, Great Lakes Theater regularly serves as the catalyst for community events and programs in the arts and humanities that illuminate the plays on its stage.

Great Lakes Theater is one of only a handful of American theaters that have stayed the course as a

classic theater. As Great Lakes moves into a new era with a permanent home in the Hanna Theatre, the company reaffirms its belief in the power of partnership, its determination to make this com-munity a better place in which to live, and its commitment to ensure the legacy of classic the-ater in Cleveland.

Richard III, Director’s Note

With the Henry VI trilogy, a young Will Shakespeare emerged onto the Elizabethan

London theater scene. With Richard III, he scored his first big hit while still in his 20s. The saga of the scoliosis-stricken, unloved son of York who schemes and slaughters his way to the English crown went on to become the most performed of Shakespeare’s plays during his lifetime. From the time Richard Plantagenet opens Henry VI, Part 3 shaking the severed head of the Duke of Somerset at Henry VI’s defeated army and berating the forever silenced cranium to “Speak thou for me and tell them what I did,” it’s clear that the author had struck gold with the character who will go on to become Richard, Duke of Gloucester and, finally, Richard III. From that point forward, the future king’s force of personality, flashes of wit and flair for warfare in spite of his physical infir-mity are increasingly irresistible — as if the char-acter will not be denied more and more stage time and ultimately demand that his author place him center-stage in his own play.

Shakespeare went on to write four more plays that, with the Henry VI’s and Richard III, would encapsulate the 100 years (of bloody slaughter in the name of divine right) known as the Wars of the Roses. The writing of the plays was done out of order, the Henry VI’s and Richard III preceding Richard II, the Henry IV’s and Henry V — poten-tially confusing for his audience, but no more or less so than our willingness to follow Star Wars or Game of Thrones. With the exception of Prince Hal carrying out his dying father’s advice “to busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels,” in the roman-ticized and nationalistic Henry V, each of the epic historical tragedies follows a similar trajectory beginning with a struggle for the crown and end-ing with the monarch’s death by assassination and/or psychic implosion and the coronation of the usurper. Each of the kings begins his reign by turning his back on the nobles who helped him to the crown. This is followed by more and more murders as the increasingly isolated monarch kills first his enemies, then his former allies, and finally any and all possible claimants to the crown.

When the tyrant’s support is sufficiently weak-ened by paranoia and misrule, a young pretender returns from banishment bringing new hope for the besieged kingdom — but every step to power continues to be marked by betrayal and butchery and the new ruler assumes the throne every bit as hated as his predecessor. And so the great wheel turns. Shakespeare scholar Jan Kott called this repetition the Grand Mechanism — “a great stair-case on which treads a constant procession of kings. Every step upwards is marked by murder, perfidy and treachery. From the highest step there is a only a leap into the abyss.”

Although Shakespeare’s chronicles of regicide are categorized as histories, the plays are not “real” history in the sense that they objectively or accu-rately portray events as they are likely to have happened. Shakespeare’s dramatic license includes complete fabrication in the interest of telling a good story and willful misrepresentation in order to honor (and not anger) his own mon-arch, Elizabeth I. The primary source for Richard III was Thomas More’s History of Richard III, undoubtedly written with little aim other than to please and support the legitimacy of More’s mon-arch and Elizabeth’s father, King Henry VIII — the son of Richard’s conqueror, the Earl of Richmond, King Henry VII. Elizabeth’s claim to the crown through her Tudor lineage was a very open question and her reign was plagued with constant plots of insurrection. By portraying Richard, as literary critic Richard Greenblatt describes, “a monster of evil, a creature whose moral viciousness was vividly stamped on his twisted body,” Shakespeare was continuing a smear campaign on the usurped house of York and, more importantly, reinforcing the Tudor claim to the crown. Elizabethan theater was a powerful shaper of public sentiment and Elizabeth was doubtless aware and appreciative of this young author’s efforts on her behalf. Synopsis

richard III begins as the Yorks celebrate their victory over the Lancasters. Richard declares

that all is well in the realm, except with him. Richard plants rumors that his brother George is plotting to kill the terminally ill King Edward IV, and Edward orders George imprisoned. Richard scores a strategic coup by wooing and winning Lady Anne, a Lancaster and the widow of the murdered King Henry VI’s son.

Edward IV’s wife, Queen Elizabeth, awaits news of Edward’s health. The lowborn Elizabeth and her family’s sudden acquisition of power make them despised by the higher nobility and she fears what will happen when the king dies. Queen Mar-garet returns from exile and prophesizes doom and misfortune to everyone gathered.

The murder of George is carried out, by which Richard is positioned to serve as Lord Protector of King Edward IV’s young son (Edward, Prince of Wales) until he comes of age to rule himself. Richard brings news of Clarence’s death and the combination of grief and shock proves lethal to Edward causing him to succumb to his illness.

As Lord Protector, Richard sends the adoles-cent Edward, Prince of Wales and his younger brother, Richard Duke of York, to the Tower for their safety. He also has the Princes’ relatives, Rivers and Gray, executed. The same fate befalls Lord Hastings, a loyal supporter of King Edward IV. Richard’s position strengthened, he has his main ally, Lord Buckingham, campaign to have him crowned king. Buckingham plants insinua-tions of the illegitimacy of King Edward IV and his children. Richard acts the role of a religious monastic with no ambition for power. The Lord Mayor of London senses it is in his best interest to spearhead an offer to Richard to become king. Richard accepts and ascends to the throne as King Richard III.

Richard III demands that the Duke of Buck-ingham murder the two young princes. When Buckingham hesitates, Richard enlists Sir James Tyrrel to see to it. Fearful for his safety, Bucking-ham flees. Rumors circulate that Henry Tudor, the Earl of Richmond, and a descendant of the Lan-caster family is returning from exile in France to challenge Richard’s rule. In a desperate move to bolster his royal legitimacy, Richard plans to have

his wife, Queen Anne, murdered to clear the way for him to court his niece, Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth and the deceased King Edward IV. Queen Elizabeth forestalls Rich-ard’s entreaty for her daughter’s hand and secretly arranges an alliance with Richmond. Buckingham is captured and executed on his way to join with Richmond’s armies. On the eve of the battle that will decide all, the ghosts of all those Richard has murdered come to curse him and tell him that he will die the next day. The following morning, Richard is slain and Henry, Earl of Richmond, ac-cepts the crown as Henry VII and marries Eliza-beth of York, thus uniting the Yorks and the Lan-casters. This is the founding of the Tudor line of kings and the end of the Wars of the Roses.

Sweeney Todd Director’s Note

The tale of Sweeney Todd is a long and sordid one and has its roots firmly placed in the col-

orful world of pop culture. Some scholars argue that the story was based on the actual exploits of a murderous barber in the late 18th century; oth-ers insist it is an urban legend and no such villain actually existed. What we do know is that the tale of the razor-wielding Sweeney has captured the public’s imagination for more than 200 years!

The character of Sweeney Todd first appeared in written form in the 1846 short story, “The String of Pearls,” by Thomas Prest, an author and musician who cobbled together a living writing penny dreadfuls. Costing only a penny, these pop culture publications were aimed at the teenage working boys of the time who couldn’t get

enough of the graphic horror stories (some things never change). In 1847, the story was adapt-ed into the play, The String of Pearls: The Fiend of Fleet Street. The play’s advertisements claimed the story was based in truth; and that, combined with the fact that many penny dreadfuls were based on newspaper crime reports, furthered the belief that Sweeney Todd actually existed!

This popular tale made its way to the British music-hall theaters and finally ended up on film in the 1936 movie, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Tod Slaughter, the British answer to Bela Legosi and Boris Karloff, gave a wildly theatrical performance as the title charac-ter and fans of horror cinema embraced the per-formance with great enthusiasm. became one of the earliest celebrity villains — a Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) or Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) of his day.

In 1973, playwright Christopher Bond altered the destiny of Sweeney Todd by grafting elements from the play, The Revengers Tragedy, onto the Sweeney Todd legend creating a more sympathet-ic and layered protagonist. The storyline included Todd’s unjust arrest and deportation to Australia, his escape and return to London 15 years later only to find his wife had killed herself (or so he was told) and his daughter had been adopted by the very judge that had falsely sentenced him. When his first attempt at revenge was thwarted, Sweeney decided to punish all men — since all men are guilty of letting injustice stand. This combination of social commentary, sophisticated plotting and black humor made Bond’s play an unqualified success.

Stephen Sondheim, no stranger to black hu-mor or political commentary, was inspired by Bond’s work and adapted it into musical form. His lush score, with a healthy nod to the horror movie scores — particularly those from the Ham-mer horror film library — stands as one of the great achievements in American musical theater.

At its heart, Sweeney Todd is an eerily romantic gothic love story. Sweeney is a man lost in time, forever haunted by his beautiful Lucy while Mrs. Lovett longs for — and is willing to do anything for — a love she never had. and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience — guides our mainstage productions as well as our educational programming. We believe that theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, cele-brate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audi-ences a glimpse of a broader world, and the wellspring of learning made possible through the arts.

We launch our fall season in the Hanna Theatre in high style (and a taste for revenge) with a daring duo of dastardly demons: King Richard the Third and Sweeney Todd, performed by a single company of astonishingly talented actors, in revolving repertory! Director Joseph Hanreddy makes his Great Lakes Theater debut with Shakespeare’s twisted tyrant, the “poisonous hunchback’d toad,” Richard the Third, in a startlingly stylish, contemporary setting of the Bard’s most popular villain. Joining King Richard in repertory (as well as mayhem) is Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-Award-winning masterpiece, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Resident director Victoria Bussert has cre-ated a razor-sharp production of Sondheim’s good-old-fashioned revenge thriller, set in Victorian London but inspired by everything from the “penny dreadful,” to German Expressionist horror films and steam punk. Charles holds a unique position in the American theater as producing artistic director of three independently operated, professional theater companies: Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio (since 2002), Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho (since 1991) and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in Lake Tahoe, Nevada (since 2010). His appointments have resulted in a dynamic and groundbreaking producing model for the companies, in which more than 50 plays have been shared since 2002.

In 2009, Charles was honored to receive recog-nition for his leadership by the Cleveland Arts Prize as a recipient of the Martha Joseph Award. Other awards include The Mayor’s and Governor’s awards for Excellence in the Arts, in Boise, Idaho. From 1988 to 1992, he held the position of artistic director at the Sierra Repertory Theatre in California. He has also worked with The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri repertory theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival.

In addition to his work with the companies in Ohio, Idaho and Nevada, Charles is active within the community. He has served as a member of the strategic planning committee for the Morrison Center, as producer of the FUNDSY Award Gala (’96, ’98 and 2000), and as producer of the 1996 Idaho Governor’s Awards in the Arts. Charles has served on the board of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Downtown Rotary Club. He received his B.A. from the University of the Pacific and Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego.

Along with his wife, Lidia, and 18-year-old daughter, Alexa, Charles resides in Boise, Cleveland and Lake Tahoe –– a feat that is only possible because of the incredible love and support of his family, and the generous communities he serves!

Other credits include The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, nine seasons with Idaho Shakespeare Festival, six seasons with the Cleveland Play House and three seasons with Cain Park. Corrie is an alumna of Baldwin-Wallace College, where she teaches stage manage-ment. Thanks to her family for their constant support.

The Creators

Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential and accomplished composer/lyricists in Broadway his-tory, was born in New York City and raised in New York and Pennsylvania. As a teenager he met Oscar Hammerstein II, who became Sondheim’s mentor. Sondheim graduated from Williams College, where he received the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition. After graduation, he studied music theory and composition with Milton Babbitt. He worked for a short time in the 1950s as a writer for the television show Topper; his first professional musical theater job was as the songwriter for the unproduced musical Saturday Night. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959) and Do I Hear A Waltz? (1965), as well as additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Musicals for which he has written both music and lyrics include A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970-1971 Tony Award Music and Best Lyrics), Follies (1971-1972 Tony Award Score and New York Drama Critics Circle Award; revised in London, 1987), A Little Night Music (1973-Tony Award Score), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976-New York Drama Critics Circle Award), Sweeney Todd (1979-Tony Award Score), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday In The Park With George (1984-New York Drama Critics Circle Award; 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), Into The Woods (1987-Tony Award Score), Assassins (1991) and Passion (1994 -Tony Award Score). He composed the songs for the television production Evening Primrose (1966), co-authored the film The Last of Sheila (1973) and provided incidental music for The Girls of Summer (1956), Invitation to a March (1961) and Twigs (1971). Side By Side By Sondheim (1976), Marry Me A Little (1981), You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983; originally presented as A Stephen Sondheim Evening) and Putting It Together (1993) are anthologies of his work. He has written scores for the films Stavisky (1974) and Reds (1981), and

composed songs for the film Dick Tracy (1990-Academy Award for Best Song). He is on the Council of the Dramatist Guild, the national asso-ciation of playwrights, composers and lyricists, having served as its president from 1973 until 1981, and in 1983 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1990, he was appointed the first Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University. He was also recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.

Hugh Wheeler was a novelist, playwright and screenwriter. He wrote more than 30 mystery novels under the pseudonyms Q. Patrick and Patrick Quentin, and four of his novels were transformed into films: Black Widow, Man in the Net, The Green-Eyed Monster and The Man with Two Wives. For films he wrote the screenplays for Travels with My Aunt, Something for Everyone, A Little Night Music and Nijinsky. His plays include Big Fish, Little Fish (1961), Look: We’ve Come Through (1961) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1966, adapted from the Shirley Jackson novel). With Joseph Stein, he co-authored the book for a new production of the 1919 musical Irene (1973) and wrote the books for A Little

Night Music (1973), a new production of Candide (1973), Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979, based on a version of the play by Christopher Bond) and Meet Me in St. Louis (adapted from the 1949 M-G-M musical), con-tributed additional material for the musical Pacific Overtures (1976) and wrote a new adapta-tion of the Kurt Weill opera Silverlake, which was directed by Harold Prince at the New York Opera. He received Tony and Drama Desk Awards for A Little Night Music, Candide and Sweeney Todd. Prior to his death in 1987, Mr. Wheeler was work-ing on two new musicals, Bodo and Fu Manchu, and a new adaptation of The Merry Widow.
