What’s Inside? 1. Rhyming Apples – Matching Activity (rhyming words) – 1 set – cut out apples

• sort the apples into two piles (red and green apples) • students try to match the rhyming words on a red and green apple

2. Crayon Memory or Go Fish Game– Matching Activity (recognizing colour words) – 1 set – cut out cards and sort

• Memory Game - choose a set of matching cards, flip the cards over and make a grid 4 X 4 (or whatever suits the needs of your students). The students take turns flipping over two cards to try and find a match. If a match is found the student keeps the card, if not the student flips the cards back over

• Go Fish – shuffle all the cards. Give each player a collection of 6 cards. Play like a normal ‘Go Fish’ game.

3. School Bus Sight Words – 1 set of ‘The Word on the Bus blank song sheet, buses and sight word cards

• choose a sight word card and place on a bus • have the students sing the song to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus..” using the new

sight word • the song could be laminated and then the word could be written on the song sheet

4. Sight Word Frames – 1 set of sight word cards and alphabet letters

• choose a sight word frame • ask the student to find a sight word card that matches the frame ( i.e. she for ) • ask the student to build the sight word with alphabet letters or stamps

5. Missing Letter Pencils – 1 set of missing pencil cards and alphabet letters

• choose a missing letter card • ask the student to find the missing letter and identify the name and/or sounds of the

letters

6. Parking Lot Game board - 1 car for each student, a game board, wipe off pen

• letters or words could be printed on the parking lot (depending on the needs of the students)

• the students then drive their car to the correct parking spot

7. Spin a Sound Wheels - (beginning sounds and vocabulary development) 1 set of wheel cards, paper clip and pencil (for a spinner) and a set of alphabet letters

• ask a student to spin the paperclip • the student must say the word for the picture the spinner lands on • the student finds the matching beginning sound letter that

corresponds to the picture

8. Rhyming Puzzles – (rhyming words) 1 set of cards -cut out into puzzle pieces – 3 matching pieces per puzzles

• mix up the puzzle pieces • ask the student to match the 3 pictures that rhyme to complete the puzzle

9. Colour Word Match – (matching colours and colour words) 1 set of cards cut out

• ask the students to match the colour of the objects with the corresponding colour word

10. I Have…Do you Have? School Vocabulary game –1 set (cut into cards)

• mix up the cards and deal out to the students • ask one student to start and read what they have on one of their cards • whoever has what item is being asked for “Do you have…” then read their card • play until all the cards have been and you get back to the original item

11. Animal Concentration – (used to reinforce syllables) -1 set – cut into individual pictures

• arrange the animal cards face down in a grid • a student chooses 2 cards and identifies the animal and the number of syllables in each of

the words • the student tries to find another animal that has the same amount of syllables

12. Walking to School Game – (can be used to reinforce beginning sounds, ending sounds or whatever concept is needed) – 1 game board, wipe off pen, markers and a die

• laminate the game board • write letters on the shoes • each student rolls the die and moves their marker to the corresponding shoe • the student says the sound or a word that begins (or end) with the sound • the first student to get to the school wins
