NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTSCollege Heights Christian School

announced that Seniors JOSH BREHM and ERIC PATTERSON are being recognized as a semi-finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. They represent the top less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors, and include the highest scoring entrants in each state. They are the only two semi-finalists named this year in the Four State area.

WILLIAM ESTEP, Senior, has also been named as a Commended Scholar and placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

These three students represent eight percent of the CHCS Senior class of 37 students.

The ACT testing results were recently released for the 2011-12 school year. The College Heights Christian School Average ACT score for the class of 2012 is 25.5. That is an all time high for CHCS. The average National ACT score is 21.1 and Missouri state average is 21.6. The CHCS scores reflect 100% participation of the 37 graduates of the class of 2012.

KATIE (Garris) MARSH Inducted into MSSU Hall of Fame

Katie (Garris) Marsh (1998) was inducted into the Missouri Southern State University Hall of Fame on September 21st 2012 during an induction ceremony and dinner. Gariss was a three-year starter on the women’s basketball team (1998 to 2002). She was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in 2002, one of two MSSU athletes to earn that honor. She was first-team All-MIAA and All-District in 2000-01 after averaging 18 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. During her career, she averaged 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting .485 from the field and .735 from the free-throw line. Gariss ranked eighth on the women’s basketball career scoring list with 1,230 points. Gariss and her husband Jeff have three children, Kinley (5), Hunter (3) and Will (4 months). The family lives in Joplin where she is a physician’s assistant at Ortho of the Four States.

Reconnecting withSUNNY (Mosbaugh) YOUNGERCLASS OF 1993When did you start attending CHCS? I attended K-12 and started in 1981. Mrs. Cruse let me skip first grade.

What was life like for you at CHCS? Honestly, it’s all I knew so this is a tough question to answer. I felt safe and loved.

How did you benefit from attending CHCS? The small class size was a great benefit to CHCS. This allowed the teachers to know the students very well, and also let us know what each teacher’s buttons were and how easy they were to push. I didn’t

realize until I had graduated how significant daily Bible lessons were. My Christian foundation was truly formed at CHCS, and that knowledge has helped me in so many areas of my life. I learned from a very early age how to apply Biblical principles to my life.

Who was your favorite teacher? I can’t answer that! They were each wonderful in their own way. Well, most of them. I will say that Mr. Lewis definitely helped me the most for college prep. I learned organization and proper note-taking techniques in his class. I sure hated it at the time, but I used what I learned from him for many years after I left.

Where did you attend school after CHCS and what degrees did you obtain? I received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Missouri Southern State University (but it was College back in the day), a Master of Science in Plant Pathology from the University of Arkansas (GO HOGS!) and a Master of Public Health with an emphasis in veterinary public health from the University of Missouri (GO TIGERS!). I love football, and when my hogs play my tigers, it’s a really rough day because my team loses. But, my team wins too!

Tell us about your career path after college. I have been a Senior Research Specialist at the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Missouri for about 11 ½ years now. I am a molecular biologist and perform DNA and RNA testing for important veterinary pathogens such as Salmonella, Tularemia, and various tick-borne diseases, and perform surveillance for foreign animal diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease, Avian Influenza, and Swine Influenza.

How do you see God working in your life now? I see God working every day. My home is happy. My children get along great and they are so much fun and make me laugh all the time. I have a roof over my head, I have a good job with people I enjoy working with, I found a wonderful church and am on the worship team there, I am dating a man who loves God more than anything and exemplifies Christ’s love to all around him, I am healthy, and I am so incredibly happy. They say if you thank God for the beauty of the sunset, the next one will be even more beautiful. I look forward to every evening—that’s how I see God working in my life. Every day is more beautiful than the last.

What do you hope God will accomplish through you? My number one hope is that my children Alex (10) and Reagan (5) grow up to love the Lord with all their heart and without question. I hope to set an example to them that no matter what life throws at you, if you keep a positive attitude and trust that God has big plans for our lives and that He won’t give us any more than we can handle, the life He gives us is really beautiful and we are blessed beyond words.

What words of wisdon would you pass on to the graduates of CHCS? They say if you can’t go into the mission field, then you should help send. When you go on to college, which you should, pick a careerfield that you not only love, but that pays well. You can’t help send if you are stuck making minimum wage. If you love making pottery, that’s awesome. Choose a career that pays well so you can enjoy your hobby. And then sell your pottery and help build a school in Papua New Guinea (a shout out to Be The Change Volunteers).

Alumni Visits CHCS

CHCS 5th graders, who have been studying the Middle East, received a visit from RACHEL CALANDRO (2009) recently. She spoke to the

class about what it is like to live in Jordan. While at CHCS, Rachel also visited some of the high school Bible classes.

MARY COLIN, CHCS Elementary Principal and Volleyball Coach, was named Spring River Valley Conference Volleyball Coach ofthe Year!

MITCHELL WOOLRIDGE (2012)Military Journey

Mitchell began his basic training on July 24th at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He spent 10 weeks being transformed from a civilian to a soldier in the United States Army. Mitchell took this job very seriously and showed amazing leadership ability among the other soldiers. Upon graduation, Mitchell was Soldier Leader of the Cycle... which means Mitchell was the top soldier out of 600 plus soldiers. At graduation, Mitchell received special recognition and led all the soldiers in the reciting of “The Soldier’s Creed.” We are extremely proud of Mitchell and his accomplishments. He is now stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia where he continues his advanced individualized training. 3

GOSSETT BREAKSSOCCER RECORDBRANTLEY GOSSETT broke the school

scoring record as CHCS opened the soccer season with their first game in Richland, MO. The previous record was set by Joe Cales during the 2004 season, scoring 81 career goals. By the end of regular season play, Gossett’s record was at 119. His goal total will continue as the team moves into district and sectional play.

LEA (Sorrick) MORGAN (2010) and IAN MORGAN (2008) will celebrate one year of marriage in November.

Congratulations to REBECCA (Thomas) MOORE (2009) and ALEX MOORE (2009) they were married in May 2011.

WORLD JOGGLING RECORD SHATTERED

EMILY BEAVER, a College Heights alumnus, has been setting records for years. Emily has won three consecutive Missouri Class 1A Championships in Cross Country and happens to be one of the three people to have done this. Emily’s most recent record, however, covered more than just our state, it covered the whole world!. Breaking the previous record of 6:17 with the new record of 5:47, Emily joggled a mile. No, that was not a typo!

Joggling is a combination of both the complicated “art” of juggling with running, or jogging. The previous record set for women was set in

1989, but only broken in 2012 by Emily. Emily broke this sitting record by seventeen seconds, which, to those of us who do not run track or cross country, might not see as much, but it really is quite a bit when running competitively.

Emily’s siblings are all runners as well, including her little sister Savannah who broke Emily’s record for the 1600m just last year. Emily’s big brother, Ethan, was the one who got her into running, but it was like a domino effect; they managed to get all four children involved in running and it is a good thing, too, because they have all brought home significant awards from their running competitions.

CHCS ANNUAL FALL BLOOD DRIVENovember 14th will be the CHCS annual fall Blood Drive and is sponsored

by the NHS (National Honor Society). Blood donations can be made that day by coming to the CHCS Atrium between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.

ANNUAL FUND KICK OFFCHCS will kick off the 2012-2013 Annual Fund at the end of October. This year’s fundraising effort,

OPPORTUNITY & EXCELLENCE, will focus on three main areas. Technology, Tuition Assistance and Furniture & Equipment. It is our hope, that with God’s will, we will be able to raise $80,000 toward improvements in these areas.
