VOLUNTEERMake a difference in your community! The City of Berkeley Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department welcomes the help of local community members for one-time or longer term volunteer projects. Opportuni-ties can include cleaning up parks, helping plant trees, and assisting at citywide special events for youth, as well as shoreline cleanups (at the Berkeley Marina). We also encour-age community members to propose their own projects for events like Berkeley Project Day, to improve their neighborhoods.

Check out our upcoming volunteer opportunities (to the left) and call the contact number if you are interested. City staff will give you more information about each event.

Teach Children About the Bay!Bay Interpretive Training (BayIT)

If you get excited in a boat on the Bay, investigating the beach, peering under docks and rocks for animal life, or bird watching, the Berkeley Marina volunteer training program could be for you! Our training begins in October 2015 and con-tinues until June 2016. See more infor-mation on page 17 or call 981-6720.

The PRW Department maintains 52 parks that include community centers, swimming pools, restrooms, athletic fields, tot lots, and play areas; three resident camps; and the largest public marina in the Bay Area consisting of over 1000 berths, public access docks and boat ramps. In the table below you will find the department’s planned capital projects for the next two years and their funding source.

With the passage of Measure F in Novem-ber 2014, the PRW Department now has approximately $1,100,000 of Parks Tax Funds to spend on capital projects. These funds, combined with General, Marina, Camps and Grant Funds gives the depart-ment almost 8.8M in funds in the next two years to fix some of our most needy facilities. While this is a dramatic improve-ment over past funding allocations, City of Berkeley parks, marina, camps and facilities still have funding needs close to $100,000,000.

Projects funded in 2016Berkeley Rose Garden Trellis–Phase 1: This project partially rehabilitates the exist-ing Berkeley Rose Garden Trellis with safety and accessibility improvements. Work includes removal of the existing Maybeck-designed trellis, and reconstruction of a portion of the trellis to preserve historic detail. Full reconstruction and accessibility improvements will be completed as funding becomes available.

James Kenney Park Play & Picnic Area Renovation: The school-age and tot play areas on the east side of James Kenney Community Center are being redesigned to provide a better play experience for children ages 2–12. The picnic area will be expand-ed to provide opportunities for large groups, as well as small. Design is underway.

Berkeley Bay Trail Extension—Segment 3: The Bay Trail Extension connects the main loop of the San Francisco Bay Trail with the South Cove parking lot to Shorebird Nature Center. The first two segments have

been constructed, and the third segment is in the design phase.

Projects funded in 2017James Kenney Building Seismic and Siding: This community center will receive an exterior makeover that includes seismic improvements and all new siding. The project is in the design phase and will be constructed in 2016.

Strawberry Creek Volleyball, Basketball and Tennis Courts—Phase 1: This project will include the renovation of existing sports courts with safety and accessibility improvements. Design for the full project will occur in 2016 with phase 1 of the construction happening soon after. Full construction and accessibility improve-ments will be completed as funding becomes available.

Projects funded in 2015 to be constructed in 2016: The Grove Park Tennis and Bas-ketball Court and Ohlone Dog Park renova-tions are not on the below list, but will be constructed in 2016.
