Les and I welcome you to the annual Fall Gala, an event we
started 12 years ago as a small
house party and have happily watched grow year after year. The
Gala is a wonderful evening
that mirrors the diversity and inclusion within our community.
Both of us struggled with
visibility, identity and self-esteem growing up due to bigotry,
ignorance and invisibility. We are
committed to making the world more compassionate and doing our
part by celebrating LGTBQ
contributions to the world. The annual Fall Gala is part of this
mission to make sure every
student in BC has the support to overcome bullying, homophobia
or self-shame. By supporting
Out In Schools, we want to make the world safer and more
tolerant for everyone.

Our tag line for the Fall Gala - Diversity Is Delicious - is
meant to
convey the fun in our fundraiser but also recognize the value
of
individuality and the societal good that comes from
celebrating
creative self-expression. We are all better off being whoever
we
want to be without fear or shame or self-doubt. But when
youre
a kid still trying to puzzle out your identity, bullying and
negative
stereotypes make it harder to believe in your personal value.
And
that struggle too often gets internalized and stays with us
after we
grow up. We need to break that cycle and create a more open
space for individuality. And, to my mind, there is no better way
to
do that than celebrating art and the artists who creatively
show
how beautiful, complex and intriguing the world around us is.
If
you open your eyes and heart to art, you will take more away
from
life. The same is true for people. There is something more
in
everyone that deserves to be appreciated.
Thanks to all of the artists in the Fall Gala Art Auction who
stepped
up to support all the good work done by Out In Schools. Theyve
all
invested their time, talent and creative inspiration to help out
this
important cause.
