It’s hard to believe, but this year brings the 20th installment of the East Haven Fall Festival. The first Festival in 1992 was the result of a cooperative effort between the office of then-Mayor

Henry J. Luzzi and the East Haven Chamber of Commerce. An independent non-profit organiza-tion, East Haven Fall Festival, Inc., was formed to coordinate the venture. From the beginning, the Fall Festival has featured live entertainment, restaurant booths, a business expo (now known as the Business Showcase), rides for small children, games and activities offered by local civic groups, and an arts and crafts exhibition. As time went on, the Festival grew from a two- to a three-day event, with additional features like the Community Classic Road Race, the Fall Festival Classic Car Show, and the Teen Corner.

The Fall Festival has become one of the most popular events of its kind in the region. Over the years, the Festival has proudly presented nationally renowned musical performers such as Livings-ton Taylor, John Sebastian, the Drifters, the Coasters, the Five Satins, the Shangri-Las, Jay Siegel and the Tokens, Lesley Gore, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, Little Anthony and The Imperi-als, the “New” Rascals, Shirley Alston Reeves, Lou Christie, Richard Street of the Temptations, and the Jr. Walker All Stars, all free of admission charge.

This milestone 20th celebration of the Fall Festival is worthy of a new level of entertainment, and the committee is proud to have arranged just that with our featured act on Saturday night, Ambrosia. This famous band from the 1970s and 1980s garnered five Grammy Award nominations with hits like “Holdin’ on to Yesterday,” “How Much I Feel,” “The Biggest Part of Me,” and “You’re the Only Woman.” Ambrosia, still featuring three of its four original members, is expected to draw a large crowd from across the region —so get your spot on the Town Green early on Saturday!

As always, the Festival also provides a stage and spotlight for our many talented local musicians and performers, from area rock, jazz, dance and singing groups, to East Haven’s award-winning school musicians.

The Festival committee deeply appreciates the generosity of our many sponsors who have consis-tently supported us in both good and difficult economic times; the efforts of countless volunteers; the indispensable help of the Chamber of Commerce; the work of the town departments involved in the event; and the support of the community at large. I also extend our gratitude to Mayor April Capone, her staff, and the members of the Festival planning committee, all of whom have worked so hard to make this year’s event another success.

Even as we reach this plateau of longevity, the Festival committee mourns the recent loss of one of its most dedicated members, AnnLynne Carlson. AnnLynne coordinated the Arts and Crafts portion of the Festival for many years. Her tireless efforts, love of community, and positive outlook epito-mized the spirit of the East Haven Fall Festival, and she is sorely missed.

On a personal note, it has been my privilege to serve as the president of the Fall Festival corpo-ration since the beginning. I am deeply indebted to all of my fellow committee members over the years, and to the people of East Haven, for making it one of the most enjoyable and rewarding expe-riences of my life.

We hope you enjoy the 20th annual East Haven Fall Festival!

Sincerely Michael A. Albis, President East Haven Fall Festival, Inc.

9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 on the East Haven Town Green

The annual East Haven Fall Festival Car Show, in its 19th year, attracts classic car owners from around the region. The show, which begins on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m., consistently attracts the nicest cars in New Haven County.

The shade of the historic East Haven Town Green is a perfect spot for cooling hot classic cars on a balmy summer’s day. Between the music, the oldies DJ, the food, and the children’s rides, the East Haven Fall Fes-tival is a favorite of many car owners. More than 240 cars have been a part of the show in past years—who knows how many can be expected this year!

The show starts on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m., with trophies presented at 3 p.m. Mayor April Capone presents the Mayor’s Cup to her favor-ite car in the show. Other special trophies include the President’s Award and Best in Show.

The entrance fee is $10 per car and there is no spectator fee. The show is open to all cars and all model years. There is no pre-registration and no rain date.

For more information, call Wayne Sandford at 203-469-7823 or Big

Entertainment Schedule

AmbrosiaMore than 40 years ago, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North,

David Pack, and Burleigh Drummond were four young musi-cians in the South Bay of Los Angeles who came together to play progressive, classical, and world music with roots in blues and R&B.

They called their new sound Ambrosia. The musical public called it America’s answer to English acts

like Yes and King Crimson. The band quickly developed a fol-lowing, and would soon win five Grammy nominations and earn heavy airplay, five hit singles, and collaborations with names like Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Alan Parsons.

Ambrosia would also secure the love and respect of the musi-cal community as well as sold out concerts all over the world.

Today, the band is doing better than ever, with three of four original members still playing with Ambrosia, and the addition of the talented David Lewis on keyboards, Doug Jackson on guitar, and Ken Stacey on vocals. The group is also recording a new CD and touring throughout the world. Ambrosia performs on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

The BernadettesThis lively group got its start in the early 1990s as a traditional

Blues band, covering songs by Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Buddy Guy, but the band quickly began to experiment with its own versions of R&B classics by James Brown, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye, adding classic Motown hits, funk, soul, and more to its repertoire. The resulting mix has resulted in the Bernadettes becoming one of the area’s premiere live acts, even-tually being voted the best rhythm-and-blues band by the New Haven Advocate’s Readers Poll in 1996, as well as New Haven’s Number One Bar Band. A great sound if you want to get up and dance. The Bernadettes perform on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Mary Cacace, president of the East Haven Chamber of Com-merce, and Michael Albis, president of the East Haven Fall Festi-val, Inc., have jointly announced that Town Fair Tire and AnnLynne Carlson will be honored at this year’s 20th annual Fall Festival.

Town Fair Tire has been a major entertainment sponsor of the Festival for more than 10 years. Following the lead of David McDermott Auto in 1998, Town Fair Tire’s participation enabled the committee to bring additional national acts each Friday night of the Festival, including The Rascals, Shirley Alston Reeves (lead singer of the Shirelles), The Tokens, The Shangri-las, Kenny Vance & The Planotones, The Dubs and Hall of Famer, John Sebastian (formerly of the Lovin’ Spoonful), to name just a few. The Festival will honor Town Fair with a ceremony prior to the introduction of the Saturday night feature act.

The East Haven Chamber of Commerce will honor AnnLynne Carlson at its annual Saturday morning breakfast on the Town Green. Carlson, a member of both the Chamber and the Festival Planning Committee, passed away suddenly in June of this year. In her capacity with the Chamber, AnnLynne helped to coordinate and expand the town’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the East Haven Town Green to a full day of fun and activities for the East Haven community.

In addition to the Chamber’s recognition, the Festival Planning Committee has dedicated this year’s Festival to the memory of Ann-Lynne Carlson. A dedicated member of the committee for many years, AnnLynne coordinating the crafts section of the Festival and worked tirelessly to make it a source of enjoyment and pride for the entire community.

If you wish to attend the breakfast, contact Chamber President Mary Cacace at 203-467-4305.

The AMBER Alert program is a voluntary program for all children under the age of 18. The parent or guardian of participating children will receive a wallet-sized, laminated card with a photo of the child; a unique AMBER Alert number; and the minimal, essential information needed to find a child in the event he or she is abducted. The encrypted information is sent to a secured National AMBER Alert database. Multiple Amber ID cards are available for an additional fee.

In order to obtain the card, the parent or guardian must fill out and sign a brief consent form. The information provided does not identify the child by name, address, school, or event location and is only useful to law enforcement and the parent or guardian in an emergency.

In Memoriam: AnnLynne Carlson Sponsorship GroupsThe Fall Festival Committee dedicates

the 20th Annual East Haven Fall Festival to the memory of AnnLynne Carlson. AnnLynne was a dedicated member of our committee for many years, working tirelessly to make the Festival a source of enjoyment and pride for the entire com-munity. The sentiments expressed below by her family aptly describe the feelings of the committee members as well.

AnnLynne left us much too soon, but we will never forget her.

“AnnLynne Carlson was an incredible woman. Anything she ever did was out of love. She was the most giving person. She got such joy from making others happy. Her kind spirit and warm smile were gifts of their own.

“She treated everyone as if they were mem-bers of her own family. She was loved by all who knew her, whether it was through her store (Annie’s House of Crafts), daycare (Little Buds Play Care), or the numerous town events she organized, such as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting or the Arts and Crafts section of the Fall Festival.

“Her creativity was unmatched, and she was always trying to bring art into everyone’s lives: murals on the walls, paintings on the deck, an infinite number of kids’ crafts in the garage. She loved to create and this was a gift that she shared so generously with all of us.

“Her determination should be an example to us. If Ann had an idea, she would make it hap-pen no matter what. We should all strive to be as driven and determined as she.”
