Golden Retrievers . . . By Claire CoyneWhen you think of a Golden Re-triever, what do you think of? Do you think of a cute cuddly puppy or a large active dog? Both of these visualizations are correct! Golden

Retrievers start as small, cute, cuddly puppies that don’t weigh much, but later turn into large dogs weighing up to eighty pounds! Because of its massive size, the Golden Retriever needs a lot of exercise. It should be taken on a long run or walk everyday. They should also go outside and fetch a stick or ball every so often. As long as you keep the Golden Retrievers healthy, they will live a long (and happy!) life! Another wonderful quality

is their friendli-ness. They are one of the top family dogs in America. Golden Retrievers are great with chil-dren of all ages because they are gentle and loving and VERY pro-tective! Golden Retrievers come

in all different shades of “golden” starting with a light cream all the way to a rich gold. They tend to be a lighter shade of cream when they are puppies and a darker golden when they are adults. You can tell the age of the dog just by it’s color! The Golden Retriever originated in the United Kingdom. They helped men hunt ducks, birds, and other small ani-mals. They were bred to retrieve the animals undamaged. Golden Retrievers were able to do that because of their soft teeth. They are also great guide dogs for the blind and deaf. Golden Retrievers go through many years of training to help people. The training can start when they are barely two and it is five to seven years after until they are finished. Golden Re-trievers are dedicated animals who like to help others! Golden Retrievers are amazing animals. They are great hunters, are friendly and caring, and love to exercise!

A VERY VERY LUCKY BIRD . . .By Alexander Ke"o#

On Friday, September 17th, I was in the library, and I looked out the large window and saw a white bird in the grass. I thought to myself, “Are there white birds in Rocky River?” I was about to tell a teacher, but the librarian told us it was time to leave. Then in study hall, Mrs.Gerlack was telling us how they caught a white bird from outside. So I walked up to her and said, “If no one claims the bird, I’ll take it home.” I then got my dad’s permission , so I gave Mrs. Gerlack my home phone number. That next Tuesday she dropped the bird off at our house. The first name that came to mind for the bird was Ziggy. After naming it Ziggy, we got the cage ready, got it fed, and then talked to it. The next day, as soon as I started my homework she started to sing. I was amazed! One day, we let her out of her cage and left the room for an hour and when we came back, she was gone. I was scared that she flew away, so we had a full house search. To make a long story short, I found her on a window sill. After that we never let Ziggy out of her cage. That is the story of how I got my new pet, Ziggy.

NEW KIDS . . . by Samantha Williams

! ! Sometimes everything is not what it seems. In middle school, you go through some pretty tough times, the new kids especially. I’m new here and I really like it. ! ! It’s hard to make friends and find a group that you fit in with. To make friends, you should join clubs (see page 12), play sports and sit with different groups at lunch to get to know people. Some kids may be shy, but that shouldn’t stop you from not trying. ! ! I personally have made some great friends. Football games are also a great way to meet people. For the new kids out there, don’t just sit back and hope you’ll make a friend. It really doesn’t work that way. Be courageous -- come out of your shell and Rocky River Middle School will rock!

Welcome, 6th Graders! By Clare O’Toole

On behalf of the newspaper staff, I would like to welcome the 210 sixth graders to our school. You will have a very fun time here! The 7th graders were in your shoes as new students last year, and we know that it can be very confusing at first. Sixth grade can be a big and hard transition because there are more responsibilities and schoolwork. RRMS has lots of activities to offer to 6th graders like clubs, dances, the talent show, and the annual middle school musical. The information is always on Channel Ten and the Rocky River Middle School website which is www.rrcs.org. I encourage you to get involved because it makes the transition easier and hopefully a little more fun. Before you know it, you’ll be in 7th grade, where there are even more new activities like trying out for cheerleading, the RRMS sports teams, and taking French or Spanish. The final highlight of your middle school career is going to Washington, D.C. at the end of 8th grade! It will be here before we know it! Have a wonderful year.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Did you know . . . you can see the newspaper on line and in COLOR! OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. GIFFORD . . .by Grace Wilhelmy When I interviewed Mr. Gifford it was so amazing! He is such an easy person to talk to. He likes a lot of sports, like ski-ing, golfing and fishing. He has two daughters under the age of ten. Their names are Lauren and Allison. His favorite restaurants are Tartine and Aladdins. Mr. Gifford worked at the high school for ten years and was an English teacher there. He taught ninth and tenth grades. I sure am glad that we have a principal like Mr. Gifford!

**********************************************************************************************************************

OUR ASST. PRINCIPAL, MS. HAMPEL . . .by Clare O’Toole Ms. Hampel is our assistant principal, and she generously provided some facts about herself. Ms. Hampel’s favorite color is green, and her favorite food is filet mignon. She loves going to Tetons, WY. on vacation. She has a puggle named Opa! who’s six years old. Before she was an assistant principal, she used to teach math. Ms. Hampel said it was hard work, and wanted to try something new. Then she became an assistant principal. She used to play basketball and wanted to be a coach, so she coached volleyball and basketball for 20 years. Her college basketball coach inspired her to become a teacher.

Welcome New Staff! MRS. JOELLE GERLACK: Media Center by Clare O’Toole This year we have a new library assistant, Mrs. Gerlack, and she generously answered some questions about herself. ! I asked her about her favorite book and the most popular book here at school. Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite book is The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which is about African-American maids working in Mississippi in white households in the early 1960’s. She says that it is her favorite because the story is interesting and the characters seem to come to life. “I couldn’t put it down,’’ was Mrs. Gerlack’s comment. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is the book Mrs. Gerlack has checked out of the RRMS library most since the beginning of the school year. ! Her favorite food is shrimp and cheese grits with fried green tomatoes. She says, “I

think I was meant to live in the South!’’ Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite color is black. She says, “It may sound weird.’’ She says, “I am a huge animal lover. Growing up, my parents always let us have animals…ponies, cats, dogs.’’ She and her sisters even had a squirrel named “Daisy” at one time! Mrs. Gerlack learned to care for animals at an early age and learned that animals love you no matter what. Mrs. Gerlack’s favorite animal is the horse. She also loves riding her own horse, “ Jazz”, who is a 6-year-old, black-and-white blue-eyed American Paint horse (featured in our Pet Gallery). Mrs. Gerlack has owned “Jazz” for a year and a half.

! ! Mrs. Gerlack loves to vacation in the mountains and the ocean, and she loves to watch her husband and kids play hockey. ! Mrs. Gerlack worked at RRHS last year and switched with Mrs. Morbitzer. Working with younger kids is the biggest difference for Mrs. Gerlack in her new job. She especially likes working with middle-school-aged kids. Now that you know a bit about her, stop and introduce yourself when you have a chance!

Entertainmentby Andrew Baca

Are you ready for WWE Hell in a Cell? Well, if so, you might see results at the end of the quarter and further PPV results from WWE. I’m not doing just WWE, I’ll be doing school entertain-ment also, like the talent show and many other things. So if you like WWE and other entertainment, read my article.ANDREW’S ENTERTAINMENT CLOSE UP: Sunday, October 3, Hell in a Cell took off with a bang as matches were won and lost. The Undertaker battles his brother, Kane, for the World Heavyweight Title. Kane regains his title in Dallas on Sunday because of help from Paul Bearer. The Celtic Warrior Sheamus tried to get his WWE Championship back in his hands as he faced the Viper Randy Orton inside a Cell. Orton gets the victory and regains his title. Daniel Bryan, The Miz, and John Morrison battle for the U.S. Title. Daniel Bryan locked in the label lock in the first ever submissions count any where match. Natalya got a victory against team Lay Cool for the Unified Divas Championship. Edge wanted to have a match with Jack Swagger after the Raw GM scheduled it at Hell in a Cell. And a sad night for John Cena fans as he loses to Nexuses Wade Barret, and now John Cena has to join Nexus. * * * * * * * *

BRAIN DEAD by Tom BrownAll right. This is my first movie review, and one of my favorites. I am prepared to talk about the final gore fest, but first, I want to explain the rest of the movie. So, the story is this: a group of explorers/poachers kidnap a cursed monkey. The curse? Anything it bites turns into a zombie. So imagine what happens when Lionel (Adrien Brody)’s mom gets bitten? That’s right, she’s infected. But they have no clue of the curse, so his mom comes back, kills the nurse, two thugs, and a priest. Then, of course, Lionel hides them in his huge house and then moves them into the basement where he is prompted to kill them. So the zombies’ final meal is poisoned scrambled eggs. Then a fat guy wants to buy the house for a party. Then Lionel gets thrown into the basement where he finds out that he gave them animal poison, which is non-lethal to the zombies. So the zombies get loose and kill everyone but Lionel and his love interest. Surprisingly, this isn’t a straight-on horror flick, but instead is a horror-comedy. To sum things up, the end scene is like watching a really gory Evil Dead movie.

RECYCLE!FUN WAYS TO RECYCLE AND SAVE THE EARTH!!

By: Martina Blazevic

How to make a shiny gum wrapper plan book cover…

• First you will need to get a plan book or use the one from school.

• Next save all the gum wrappers from the gum you chew.

• Then after you’ve got the wrappers, flip them over and lick the white side.

• After you’ve done that, carefully peel the white part off and the back will be sticky.

• Finally, you can cut the wrappers or just simply stick them on your plan book any way you want them.

FUN FACTS . . . by Manny Marotta

Welcome to a new school year! It is autumn now, and the days are getting shorter, and holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving are now upon us. What’s better than knowing more about this season?

✴ Orange and Black are Halloween’s colors because orange represents the fall harvest, and black represents death and darkness.

✴Pumpkins aren’t always orange. They grow in blue, green, and white, too!

✴Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped candy in America, invented in 1896.

✴The reason we wear costumes on Halloween is

that the ancient Celts were worried of being tracked down by spirits at night, and wore masks and costumes to avoid them.

✴The average person spends $66 on Halloween decorations, costumes and candy.

✴ Snickers bars are the most popular candy on Halloween.

✴In 1939, the Ouija Board outsold Monopoly games on Halloween.

Stone Lab 2010

by Martina Blazevic

On Wednesday, October 13th, the sixth graders left for Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island. We traveled by bus then by ferry, had lunch at the park, then traveled by trolley, and then by boat to get to Gibraltar Island. We unloaded our baggage and put it into the dining hall until we had to take it to our cabins. When that was finished, we were introduced to our counselors who would teach us what we had to learn. After all that was finished, we all got into our groups and went to our afternoon activities. We learned about zooplankton and phytoplankton, learned how to identify fish, and dissected them.

Ewwww!!! Another activity was: we

learned about the organisms that live in the lake other than fish, like crayfish, snails, leaches, zebra mussels and much more. After we learned about them, we put on rain boots and walked in the lake to try and catch some of the organisms. When we were finished with our afternoon activities we had to work on our projects. Some kids worked on animals, edible plants, fish, astronomy, the lake, etc. After we had time to work on that, we had dinner.

After a day of travel and fun, we had to be hungry, so we ate and got our cabin numbers and we were told who would be in the cabin with us. After dinner, we took our luggage and put them in our rooms. When we got settled, we left our cabins and went down to where the teachers set the campfire up. We talked, had s’mores, candy bars -- and the best part -- told scary stories!! After the fun campfire, we left and went up to our cabins to get ready for bed. After a good night’s sleep, some of the

sixth graders woke up very earlier to go star gazing. We saw Orion, the big dipper, and many more. When that was finished, all the sixth graders had to pack and bring their luggage down to the ramp

by 7:30. But before we went to eat breakfast, our rooms had to be all cleaned up. After the yummy breakfast, we had our morning activities, such as the bio cruise where we took measurements of the water temperature, the depth of the water, etc, and we also were troll-ing on the cruise. Some of us learned how to identify birds, and we went on a bird walk to look for birds. When it was time to leave, we got on the boat, and then took a bus. We stopped at the Perry’s Monument Information Center. After that, we rode to the place where we got on the ferry for the ride, then after that we took a bus all the way back to the Middle School. Stone lab was a lot of fun!!!!!

Maddie’s Mad Math!by Maddie Rowley1) Multiply 23 by 50.2) If you’ve already had your birthday,

add 1760 -- if you haven’t, add 1759.3) Subtract the 4 digit year you were born.4) If you don’t have a 3 digit #, then you

messed up.The first digit is 9 and the second and third are . . . . . . . . . . . your age!You’re probably trying to guess how this works, huh???????

Fun Facts! by Maddie Rowley

•. There are more stars up there than there are grains of sand on earth...WOW!

•. In your lifetime, you will produce enough spit to fill two swimming pools. Nice image, isn’t it?

•. Every one of your coughs has the potential to burst forward at 60 MPH.

•. A single sneeze can exceed 100 mph.•. It’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes

open... I bet next time you sneeze you’re going to try to keep your eyes open!

•. When you blink, you use 200 muscles. You just blinked, didn’t you?

•. The longest human organ is skin...The sur-face area (a little bit of math here...) is about 25 square feet!

•. Wait, it gets better... your skin is responsible for about 6 lbs of your body... and you thought it was the ice cream...

•. And, do you know what happens once a month? YOU actually shed and regrow skin layers. You’ll probably have 1,000 new skins in your lifetime. This is kind of heavy... You shed 1.5 pounds of skin every year, so by the time you’re 70... ready for this? You will have lost more than 100 POUNDS of skin!

•. Which leads you to the next gross fact... Do you know where dust comes from? HELLO! Dead skin cells! It’s true -- about 90% of dust in your house comes from dead skin. Grab a cloth!

•. Well, speaking of stomachs and that stuff...the human stomach makes a new lining every two weeks. Otherwise, it would digest ITSELF!

•. Bodies really are amazing... Most of us have-within our bodies enough carbon to make 900 pencils...weird, huh?

•. This one gets hairy... We have about 100,000 hair follicles on our heads!

The end. Hope you enjoyed reading. :)

MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL By Tom Anderton

My first day of school was fun,But I couldn’t wait for it to be done.My nerves were on edge,As I put my supplies on my locker’s top ledge.

When I went to my homeroom at first,I assumed the worst. My fears were relieved,With all the good news I received. My day went by in a flash,

When I went from class to class in a dash.I closed my locker door with a bang,While the final school bell rang.

MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOLby Alison Murphy

A zoo is like this hallway,You feel like a baby monkey,

Crawling and taking their FIRST STEPS.

Science feels like you’re beingPULLED

From your natural habitatThere, gone.

Next more problems,Language

So I thought. But now happiness is seen

In everyone’s eyes.Strange

My body is . . .HAPPY

The smile maintains to slip through

From the enjoyment that class brought.

SOCIAL STUDIESNothing social about it.

MATHScared but ready,

I walked in with a smileReady to achieve whatever

Comes my way.

“EAT MY BUBBLES” by Lauren Devorace

“Eat my bubbles” I focus on the words in front of me. The girl wearing them Steps onto the blocks.

“Beep” the buzzer sounds. The girl in front of me dives in. I pull my goggles on; loosen my legs, Ready for action to take place.

The race ahead of mine finishes, As I give my arms one last stretch The announcer starts to announce names, And the feeling inside me is about to burst.

“Tweet-twe-eeet!” the whistle’s piercing blow, My legs jello stepping up to the block. “Take your mark,” the official says “BEEP!” and I’m off.

Fly through that water! Attack on back!Don’t rest on breast! Never breathe on free!

“Finish strong into the wall” I can hear coach’s voice in my head. I get a power boost of energy, and,Zoom! I’m a rocket those last few meters.

BOOM! My hand touches the wall, A shattering force,My head snapping up To look at the board.

My lane, lane seven was first to appear!A muffled cheer arose from the stands.I look up at my parents, still in shock,While they believe it, smiling wide.

I congratulate the swimmers next to mePulling my goggles off my faceBoy, am I tired, what a race!

“What was that?” my coach exclaims, Guess he was still in shock too.Breaking into a smile, I realize,Until you try, you never know what you can do.

Ask Amber . . .Gym Clothes Smell - - Chases Friend AwayDear Amber: My friend’s gym clothes stink. I don’t want to sit next to her in gym. What should I do? –Anonymous

Dear Anonymous: I say you should tell her straight up: “Your gym clothes smell.” I’d do this on a Friday, the day you normally take gym clothes home to be washed. If that doesn’t work, oh well. She will wash them -- eventually. Hopefully then she’ll like how nice and clean they are.

Talkative Friend A DistractionDear Amber, When my friend and I are at lunch, all she does is talk. I don’t know when she eats. I never get to finish my lunch. $3.00 gone to waste every day. I tried to find another spot but she always finds me. What’s your advice? - Anonymous

Dear Anonymous: Try talking to her. If that doesn’t work, try packing your own lunch. If you pack your lunch, you save money and what doesn’t get finished becomes an after-school snack.

Don’t forget to write. My “Ask Amber” box is in the office.

SCARY STORIESby Kathryn Rieg

The legend is that if you sit in three of the graveyard chairs from

midnight until one minute after midnight, you will have the ability to see ghosts -- but you will pay with your life. This, however, did not apply to three high-school football players on Hallow-een Night in 1976. They pulled into the grave-yard in the middle of a large, open area. They had heard the legend and decided to try it, but one of them refused to try it. The friend sat down and watched the other boys run from one chair to the other. Then he sensed that something was wrong. They were leaning over to the side with their eyes rolled back, rasping. The boy began frantically screaming for help as his friends kneeled over and grabbed his leg. It is said that the boy also saw spirits for an instant. The boys died and the survivor never spoke a word. Of course, there were people mourning their loved ones nearby. They witnessed the event and filed a police report detailing what happened. No one really knows what those chairs are, except that they have been there since the town was founded.

One Halloween night, a 16-year-old girl named May and her friends, Irene, Kate, and Leslie, were out driving to a Halloween party outside of town. So, of course, they took the freeway. The car was slowing down, like it was running out of gas, but the meter said it was full. May and Les-lie went to check out the engine. When they opened the hood, there was a hand. A lone bare, hand. They were so frightened they couldn't scream. Leslie reached out to touch it then IT MOVED! This time they both screamed and Irene and Kate ran out of the car screaming. They said there was a man with his flesh torn and a missing hand in the back seat. The girls ran and the car was chasing them slowly. May called

her parents and Irene called 911 on their cellular phones as they ran. But when the cops and May's parents came, all four girls were soaking in blood. Not their own blood. The cops found a black gemstone, unidentified, in the driver's seat -- covered with blood. The girls went ahead to the party. The address was just a vacant lot but in that vacant lot were many bloody, black, uniden-tified gemstones.

There is a factory behind a middle school in Dal-las, Texas. One day, four girls were walking home from the movie theatre that used to be there before the school. When they were in the middle of the field, two girls said they needed to use the restroom. They didn't want to go back to the theatre so they decided to climb over the fence and use the restroom at the factory. The two girls went while the other two stayed to help them over the fence. After twenty minutes, the two remaining girls heard deadly screams from their friends. They ran -- and their friends were never seen again. Today, the factory still remains, and it is said if you cross the fence border, you too will never be seen again.

There was this couple in Scotland who had just moved into an old castle. When they moved in, they decided to empty out the wine cellar and found this large barrel of brandy. They tried moving it and even got a few friends around to help, but they couldn't budge it. In the end, they decided to have a housewarming party and give glasses of brandy out to empty the barrel and make it easier to move. A few days after the party, they went into the cellar and tried to move the barrel again. It still wouldn't move. The hus-band went to get his saw in order to cut it into smaller pieces and in turns they cut off the top of the barrel. Inside was a dead body and they had drank the brandy that had preserved it.

Evan, a short story . . . by Lexi Jonesco Steen

Evan had never been one for fairytales. The last day of school he told me fairytales and reading in general was lame. Then to prove his point, he chucked a book from Ryan’s hand and it hit our principal. Bad move on Evan’s part, of course. After two and a half months without seeing me, he comes up to me in the hall-way wanting to show me a passage from the book, Grimm’s Fairytales. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy he was finally reading at least something, but it confused me greatly. How and why had he changed? He also seemed to get along better with Ryan. I questioned her and she just said that he spent the summer with her and her sister. That was all she told me. I guess it made a little sense. Ryan loved fairytales, so it kinda rubbed off on him. Still, I think Lucas, Evan’s best friend, noticed something had changed with Evan’s behavior, too. He wasn’t as . . . bad as he used to be. He used to always have detentions and he didn’t turn in homework assignments. Now he was volunteering for things willingly. Even the teachers noticed it, and I was sure. Evan Dervallo had changed our summer , and he didn’t seem to care.

The Mind Blowing Future!a short story . . .by Samantha Williams

Hi! My name is Luna, and I have a story to tell! In the year 4050, I had predicted two things. One is that someone will invent an everlasting life potion; and second, when you think something in your mind, it happens without you having to do it! I’m now 12 for the 97th time, and I live in the year 4071. My predictions came true. I was 12 in the year 3198 and a friend of mine was super smart and creative. She invented the brain wave chain or BWC. The BWC is where , as I said earlier, what you think is going on as you’re thinking it. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Sadly, she didn’t drink the everlasting life potion so she passed at age 113! I miss her, though. I have been working on a new invention. I call it the floating bubble! It floats you all around town and stops you when you push the red button. I have to bring it to the headquarters before it can go into stores, though. I have to go. My cupcakes are almost done from the Auto Presto Cupcakes or the APC! Bye!
