Well another season of riding here in the Midwest is coming toa close but there is always something to do and were all busylittle somethings, arent we.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our second year for theBIG Border Rally which was held on September 11 in TwinLakes, WI. The WI Chapters of the VOA - Veterans of America M/C earned the honor ofposession of our Traveling Trophy this year and following the Almost Brothers Band, EricBuell dropped by for a late night jam with Good Time Charlie and Doctor Snake Oil.The Christian Motorcycle Association members from Northern Illinois and Southern Wis-consin were very helpful in supporting this years event again. As are many organizationsin our area, they are a wonderful example to all who ride and the general community on

what good people motorcyclists are. Thank you so much.

Im looking forward to and planning for next years event. The weekend right beforeLabour Day is our new weekend and were looking forward to working with any groupsor organizations that will be planning runs that weekend to land at the BIG Border Rally. The Mission of the BBR is to bring everyone together, to a Multi-Brand Rally at a greatvenue with great music and lots more. So many runs overlap (you can read more aboutthat in Judy Chooch Kaenels article - Kneeze in the Breeze on page 34) and conictwith other rides throughout the season limiting the success of the individual run(s) due tocompetition. If your planning a ride for the weekend before Labour Day, plan on havingyour party at the campgrounds in Twin Lakes at the BIG Border Rally where the bandsand food and vendors are already set-up. We will work with organizers to provide passesto the BBR for your rides participants. And your Reason to Ride will benet from theparticipants from the other rides who will join everyone at the end of the day at the BBR.Let me know if you would like more info. Ah, strength in numbers. I cant think of a betterand safer way to bring everyone together and still support everyone at the same time.

There are plenty of riding days left in the season, but if you dont even want to thinkabout putting your bike away, we have a couple suggestions for you in this issue. How

about a one way rental to a warmer destination? You can save a ton on the rental ex-pense and just y home. Milwaukee Mike has an article on page 26 about some desti-nation rides in warmer areas of the country and he is offering some great discounts toour readers. Or plan on shipping your two wheeled alter-ego to Arizona this comingMarch for Arizona Bike Week. Make your plans now with T-N-R Bike Events (page 37)before all the spaces are taken. You may catch up with me on that ride.

In this issue I hope you enjoy some of my personal favorite riders photos on page 8,our regular Featured Bike Page. And our GOTCHA pages this issue, like our cover, are allabout the ride. But dont worry the Featured Bike on Page 8 will return in the next issuealong with new featured articles and a Special Cover. So enjoy the rest of the 2010 ridingseason and look forward to the Winter Issue 2011 to nd out what going on locally in theJanuary, February and March.

Remember to visit all of our advertisers (tell them we said hello) and visit our our timelyweb sites for Illinois and Wisconsin at www.bikerinformationguide.com for calendar post-ings, articles from past issues and the B.I.G. archives and Gallery pictures from this yearand last year.

As always your comments and suggested are always welcome, I hope you enjoy thisissue. Live, Laugh, Love and Ride.....

The riding season can be short here in theMidwest but with help from Lake Shore Harley-Davidson you can keep riding until the rstsnowake hits the ground. We carryHarley-Davidsons line of heated jackets, vest, pants and gloves that allow you to extend yourriding season.Harley-Davidsons heated gear collection usesNanowire and Microwire technology to keep you warm and toasty at below zero

temperatures. The Nanowire technology uses silvered bers which are stitchedinto fabric and then waterproof sealed. The Microwire technology uses hun-dreds of stainless steel wires to give you instant warmth throughout your body.To maximize the benets of the Harley-Davidsons heated gear you should try

to keep the liners as close to your body aspossible, without it actually touching yourskin. You have the option of adjusting thetemperature with a single or dual thermo-stat (thermostats are sold separately). Thedual control thermostat regulates heat ontwo heated products independently. Heatedliners are designed to be worn under anyfunctional outerwear including the option tozip the liner into Harley-Davidsons FXRG rid-ing jacket for ultimate performance. Heatedclothing is compatible with all Harley-David-

son Motorcycle models; all you need to do is attach the power switch harnessof the heated clothing to the battery of the motorcycle. The power switch isan on/off switch that plugs between the connecting harness and the garmentthat is being worn. For shorter trips, a dual-source heated vest for men andgloves for men and women that are batteryoperated are also available. All of Harley-Davidsons heated elements are backed bya lifetime warranty.Whether you are touring through the can-yons in the spring, saving gas by commut-ing to work or treading across the country,Harley-Davidson heated gear offers youlonger riding time without the worry of hy-pothermia. In my opinion being a passenger on amotorcycle is the ultimate in trust. Weall know that riding a motorcycle is in-herently a risky operation and puttingones trust in another as a passenger ona motorcycle is the ultimate leap of faith. Here are a fewthings to consider before riding with a passenger. Make sure

your motorcycle is capable of riding passengers. Just because ithas a passenger seat and foot pegs it does not mean it has thecapacity to carry both you and a passenger. If your motorcyclehas the capacity make sure you have adjusted the suspension toadequately control and support the additional weight. The addi-tional weight of a passenger will increase your stopping distanceso make sure you take that into account.

Being a passenger requires that you remain as neutral as pos-sible to the control of the motorcycle. When riding very slowlyor when slowing down to stop DO NOT MOVE! A motorcycle isthe hardest to control when going slowly and movement by apassenger can upset the balance of the motorcycle. If the pas-senger needs to move they should warn the rider and do so at

    speeds higher than 30 mph.

Riding on twisty roads creates a challenge for the rider andpassenger. While the rider has to keep focus on the road thepassenger needs to relax and follow the lead of the rider. Onlarger touring motorcycles the passenger really does not haveto do anything in turns and can remain neutral while ridingthrough curves. If the passenger cannot remain neutral theyshould gently lean forward making light contact with the riderand follow their lead. Being a passenger on twisty roads ismuch like slow dancing with a partner. Just follow the leadof the rider and DO NOT lean in the opposite direction. Thebest passengers are those poor girls we see hanging on for

dear life on the back of the crotch rockets. They have notchoice but to hang on and follow the lead of the rider.

Riding with a passenger can be a very enjoyable or it can bea very difcult one. Work with your passenger to make surethey fully understand what they need to do. Less is more inthis case when it comes to what a passenger needs to do!When the rider and passenger are in sync, riding can be avery enjoyable experience. Ride safe!

Well my friends, the riding season is now at itsback end. I enjoy riding in the fall because

of the change in colors in scenery along with excellent weather andtemperatures. I also enjoy looking at the different motorcycles out on

the road and their different personalities very much like the ridersthemselves. It is interesting to see how many individuals overdo theirrides with accessories, paint and all sorts of things. Its like, whoaNelly ease up on the bling, way more than enough already. When isenough, enough? Nothing stirs my heart as when I see a bike thatshows personality without being overdone. It has its own identitywithout any hint of being overdone. Even something as subtle as anexhaust system, it is amazing how many will purchase on name only.I wonder how many individuals really know the tone they are reallylooking for and how it can affect the overall comfort and pleasure ofa ride especially a long ride, not to mention of course how it looksor will look on their bike . I know precisely what I like and dont likeregarding my motorcycle. I know precisely what I will do and wont

do with my bike. How about our riding? Do you know precisely whattype of riding you enjoy and do? And, most importantly how long youcan ride before you need to stop and rest? Make it a point to know.

I enjoy 7-10 day rides that run 3k to 4k in length. I absolutely enjoythese the most and consider them as a long trip. Next, the overnight2-3 day rides. Then of course the all day ride. These are what Istrive for and do. Nothing stirs my heart like a ride that I can drink inand ride through back roads out in the country and enjoy every facetof Gods creativity. I work diligently at not letting things get in theway of my rides that bring about tremendous joy and satisfaction. Ihave been able to cover a little over 64 thousand miles in 2.5 seasonsincluding this year.

Are you nding everything you need?

Call 224-788-8100 or visit us on-line

I also know precisely what I like and dont like in a ride when it comesto length, pace, comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment. And what isvery important is to know when enough is enough and it is time to rest.It can be the difference of returning home or not. I had the oppor-tunity this summer to do a long distance challenge ride that coveredroughly 8k miles in 14 days - Key West Florida to Homer Alaska - theHoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge all done on secondary roads. I wentthrough some of the most beautiful scenery you could hope for. Idid not make it to Homer, Alaska. I fell asleep while riding in Yukon,Canada and crashed just short of crossing into Alaska roughly 6.2kmiles into the run. You ask how could I possibly do this? Which brings

me to the point, when is enough, enough? Fatigue and being tired arevery deceiving and are two very key areas to be aware of when youare riding. Rest is a critical factor in riding safely. I had been riding dayafter day long hours and daylight lasts all the way to midnight in Can-ada. I had been riding for 9 hours straight with an average 45 degreetemp and raining steady. After, drying out all the wet clothes, I ate alarge cheeseburger and fries and then started up the ride again. Themeal kicked in and I began to nod. I should have stopped and restedbut kept going thinking that it would go away. I didnt and I took anal deep nod and the rest is history. My riding season was cut shortbut I am very thankful to be here to write this article. No matter whattype of riding you do know when enough is enough. If you are feel-ing tired, fatigued then pull over, rest, take a nap. It will make a huge

difference in your reaction time. An hour ortwo of rest can make a huge difference in yoursafety, comfort, and enjoyment of your ride.Never, ever take rest for granted. Again, know precisely when enough is enough.

Until next time, only you can determine howgood you want to be.

Every Harley owner likes to modify their bike and make it their own. Ken Rein-ert was no different. He wanted his own tunes 70s and 80s classic rock sohe loaded his iPod Nano and hit the road. He quickly tired of the Velcro stripmounting his iPod to his windshield, so he began innovating a better mount.Reinert was in the unique position to do so, having spent his past 25 yearsengineering, designing and manufacturing aerospace and industrial seals. Afterseveral months of prototype trial and error, The Riders ClawTM was born. Theslogan? Your rideYour music.

In no time, his fellow Harley riders wererequesting the mounts, and Reinert added

an iTouch and iPhone version. Before heknew it, the Riders Claw quickly spun intoits own business, including dealers all acrossthe country. 2 1/2 years later, Harley rid-ers throughout the U.S. and in 12 countriesare sporting Riders Claws on their cruisers.Weve added so many great testimonialsand awesome gallery pictures to our website; you just have to check them all out.

The Riders Claw is a tight, clean mount andlooks like it belongs on the bike; consistentwith H-Ds quality and appearance. It allowseasy access to your extensive iPod play listand is far less cumbersome than changingradio stations or CDs. Available in both showquality CHROME and jet BLACK for a lookthat will compliment any ride.

By popular demand weve also added acustom clamp set that will now allow many ofthe metric cruisers to mount the Riders Clawonto their rides as well. Although this clampis not required for a Harley mount, it can beused if desired.

As much as the quality and innovation are critical to his product success,Reinert insists hes in the customer service business. If you dial our toll-freenumber, my cell phone rings. Unless Im out on a ride, I will always answer it,24/7. We ship every Riders Claw on the day we receive the order.

As to future plans for Riders Claw, Reinert is adding the Cycle Sounds speakersystems and developing mounts to accommodate other phone styles such asthe Droid Incredible and Droid X. I believe if we continue to follow our busi-ness model of exceptional, customer-friendly service, made in the USA qualityand fast delivery, the skys the limit.

For more information, please visit http://www.ridersclaw.com, call 877-876-CLAW (2529) or follow Riders Claw on FaceBook or Twitter: @ridersclaw.

Well the last quarter of 2010 ishere ALREADY. Can you believeit? Time sure goes fast especiallywhen your busy, and not just from getting older, and was Iever busy the past couple of months hitting events in threeStates (Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin). Well I am not happy inreporting that there is not much in way of EVENTS going onthe next few months here in the Heartland. But the sunnyside is that the holiday season is all but here AGAIN, whichmeans that the New Year will be here before you know it.

And that means the riding season will be getting geared upshortly after that. January 21,22,23 will be the date of thenext Heartland Area EVENT, the 28th Annual ROD & CUS-TOM AUTO, MOTORCYCLE & PRODUCT SHOW at the QCCAExpo Center in Rock Island, Illinois.

Now of course all of the riding doesnt stop just yet. This isthe time of year when you can pick from several runs dur-ing the weekend. If you plan it just right you could take partin 3 or 4 of them. Many of them are geared towards bringscheer and happiness to children for the Holidays and to our

fellow Americans. Speaking of Americans make sure youvote in the November elections and help bring back GOV-ERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE!

Here are some of the events that I plan on being at:

October 3, 2010 the Swapmeet in Peotone, Illinois

October 17, 2010 the Swapmeet inKalamazoo, Michigan

I hope to see you while I am Out-N-About here in the Heartland and thegreat Mid-West.

we must continue remembering thosewho are still fighting the war on terror, and remember to love and work as oneteam -- Team America!

This brought me to my subject matterand a story I felt compelled to tell. It was

about a mother of one of our finest whohad come home escorted by the PGR,which in most cases means there wasa death. But as the mother explained, her son was fine and only lost his leg.Just hearing such excitement about onlylosing a leg I asked her if she wouldkindly repeat herself and again sherepeated, he only lost his leg. At thatmoment, I asked her why she was lookingto find me when the hero was back ather house, and what I could do for hercompared to the sacrifices he had madeand the heroic acts he had done. Then, with a gleam in her eyes and a smile onher face, she said in the calmest voice,Mowhawk, even a hero needs a map.

I always try to surround myself with peoplewho show qualities of being a map so Ican keep my focus in times when I mayget weak. One of my favorite supporterswho is definitely in this category, is thelaw firm Hupy and Abraham S.C. Theyhave taken this mapping attitude and

put it to good use by being involved intheir community and leading the chargeto make each persons life better then itwas when they met them.

So now as 9-11 passes and we go intothe holiday season, most people willforget all about the day that changedAmerica. People will gather with friendsand family, and those moments of 9-11wont even cross their minds. But I canonly hope that the message of that daywill travel with them on their journey, andthat they have become a map.

Well, we passed another anniversaryof 9-11 and, as always, I was asked tojoin in several events to mark this tragicmoment in history. One of those eventswas the Cruise 9-11 in Decatur, Illinois. As I was on my way to this event, itdawned on me how important this day

was not just for the victims families, but for each and every one of us herein America. This also reminded me howimportant it is to take part in events suchas these, as to create unity, and showterrorists around the world that, thoughwe have differences, we still stand unitednine years later.

For most events, I prepare my speechwrapped around the theme of the eventspurpose. But this would not happen atCruise 9-11 as I felt this was a chanceto make it much more and showthose attending that not only are weremembering those lost on this day, but

At this moment I realized what she wassaying and knew my mission was not invein, but needed to be expanded.

Her statement brings me to this articleI am writing and the simple question Iwould ask each and every one of you.

Are YOU ready to be a map? Are youready to stand up and defend those whodefend us, and are you willing to makea difference in the lives of someone lessfortunate? Wellare you?

You see, in a country where 1 in 7 areliving in poverty and where unemploymentstands near 10%, now is the time whenwe all can make a difference and be amap for those who need the strength tocarry on. We can be the ones who providedirection to those who have lost theirhome, job, or loved one, and help themget back on the path to the Americandream. Its not always easy being a map,but its always fulfilling.

Just got back from a visit out to our newest Street Eagle motor-cycle rental location in Las Vegas and boyIll tell you whatTheir tagline What Happens in Las Vegas, Stays in Las Vegascould not describe anywhere in the good old US of A any betterthan this 24 hour a day party city of neon lights although theycould have added and Home of Sex, Drugs (in this case drugsmeaning every imaginable form of alcohol) and Rock n Roll andno one would challenge their claim! That said, there is some-

thing else I discovered out in Vegas my fellow riding brothers &sistersthere are more good rides within a days ride of this citythan anywhere I have ever been! Want to take a short putt sayunder 100 miles or sohow about cruisin on up to the top ofthe Hoover Dam or headin out in the other direction to Valleyof Fire (why do they call it that you ask? Well lets just say thatthe description is pretty right on as you will see when you areriding through it). Up for a bit more of a real ride and maybe 1out-of-town overnight try out Zion National Park just across theborder in Utah and while your at it head a little further North andtake a slow ride through Bryce Canyon where you will think youwere dropped onto a different planet (remember your rst expe-rience of seeing the Badlands?....same kinda sensation). Got acouple of days to get outta town and do some real ridin?... thencheckout the Grand Canyon or even Moab.

These rides feel so good you have to keep reminding yourselfthat ridin a motorcycle is not a sinit is perfectly legal (unlessof coarse you are blastin down these beautiful highways pushintriple digits but thats another story).

And the best part of this hot tip is that these like seein Godrides I am describing are best taken when the snow is yin orgetting ready to y back here in the Midwest.

So what are you waitin for? Book as couple plane tickets for youand your girl and or get your best ridin buddy to get off his orher ass and shake those winter time blues with a little 2-wheelholiday and nd out for yourself why it is called Sin City.

Find the road less traveled and go thereNow.

they actually investigated. Im sure no one from the NTSB took the time to hop ona motorcycle and actually see some of the problems that confront many of us on adaily basis. Wearing a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218) com-pliant helmet is not the silver bullet to motorcycle safety. And, you have to wonder ifa mandatory helmet law would happen nationwide and show no signicant reduc-tions in fatalities, what would be next? Airbags, seatbelts, training wheels, roll cages?Seems ridiculous now, but whats next?

I suppose that with all this talk about helmet laws most people that arent familiarwith ABATE probably think that its the only issue we deal with. Simply not true. InWisconsin, we run a motorcycle awareness program called Share the Road whichteaches new drivers how to better interact with motorcyclistson our roadways. We have a Motorcycle Safety Foundation(MSF) endorsed rider education program called Safe Rider Incthat teaches several hundred students a year how to ride. We

send delegates to Washington DC to work with not only theMRF, but also the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) onmotorcycle related road safety, insurance, and discriminationissues. We are part of many conferences nationwide, mostrecently taking part in the Motorcycle Travel Symposium which discussed solutionsto the meaningless Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) statistics that the Federal Highway

Administration (FHWA) currently compiles. Weve convinced all of our congressmento sign on to x a loophole in the Health Insurance Parity and Accountability Act(HIPAA) that allows motorcyclists to be denied health insurance while riding. And thelist goes on.

If you never knew what ABATE was about, I hope you have come away witha better understanding now. It may not be all about helmets, but it is all aboutfreedom. If this article has sparked your curiosity, please go to our website at www.abatewis.org and learn more about the laws that affect our lifestyle. Vigilance is theeternal price of freedom.

Every time you turn around there is a bike runor event supporting this charity or that char-ity and its enough to make your head spin alaExorcist style. When each and every weekendof the riding season is packed full with charitablerides, how does the generous biker choose whichto attend? My biggest pet peeve and cause formy E-Venting is the overload of charitable rides. I know that is not the mostpopular opinion, but come on! Its almost like we have the Lifetime Channel

Disease of the Week rides and it is overwhelming! I think that somewhere inthe past 10 years, the rest of the world caught on that bikers are by far themost generous individuals in the world, and to be honest they are capitalizingon that! Seriously! There is a ride for almost every organ in the body so howdo we choose? By being smart about the charities we get involved with thatshow.

The most efcient charities spend at least 75% of their budget on their pro -grams and services and less than 25% on fundraising and admin fees (Tip:check out their IRS 990s). Now I don't want your club or organization to gettoo hung up on administration fees and expenses of a charity. Believe me;your event/run is going to incur expenses and plenty of them! The most im-portant thing to do is ask questions. A great heart-tugging story is no longerenough to warrant charitable support. Find out what that charity does withthe dollars raised and how it is spent as well as success stories. If a charitycan't accurately explain who it is or what it does, then move on. The Biker-

Place is too crowded and there are many charities that can explain exactlywhy our hard earned dollars are needed.

Also, ask if a representative from the charity can come out to your meetingsto explain to your members about their organization and answer questionsthat may arise without hesitation. A good charity will attend the event or runas well. Not only does this give your members a chance to interact with thepowers to be but feels good to know who your money is going to.

Finally, be aware of how many runs are going on when setting up the date foryour charity ride. Too many rides beneting the same organization is a surere way to turn off bikers. There is nothing wrong with joining forces withanother club or organization to have a combined event helping out one char-ity instead of a poorly attended one just because you picked the same date assomeone else. So I hope these tips help a bit and remember DuKane Chapterof A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Toy and Food Run is on October 10th. See? I canshamelessly plug my event can't I?

Recently I had a customer come in andask me about shocks, and when I thoughthe should change them. In one of myearlier articles I mentioned changing shocksat a certain mileage, he said he couldnt tellif they were worn or not but wanted to checkand see, and asked if I would ride his bike and see what I thought. Soafter doing a service that it was in for and having to test ride it anyway,I rode the bike. When I returned from the test ride I told him that thebike rode and handled ne but when I started it and drove around fora little bit I noticed a whining noise coming from the cam gear cover, being that the bike was an evolution and had close to 30,000 miles onit, I asked him if he ever had any motor work done such as a cam andpushrods. He said he hadnt being that it was an evo and knowing thatthe cam bearings werent the best part on the bike, I suspected that itwas the problem. I explained to him that if it was left to get worse itcould cause major damage to his engine, he agreed and said to do thework.

The point I'm trying to make is not to have your cam bearing noisechecked, but occasionally (even if you do your own service) to havesomeone else take your bike for a ride, not just a shop mechanic, itcould be your buddy just to see or hear a problem you cant. When youride the same bike, especially if you ride allot or everyday you begin toget used to little noises and rattles, the way the bike handles or runs, afresh perspective from someone from the outside looking in so to speakis always a good thing. Theyll notice things that you wouldnt normallyrealize, like a sloppy throttle, a misadjusted clutch, or in this case anengine noise that could cause major damage. I could go on and onabout this problem or that problem or did you check this or did youcheck that, by the time I was done listing the problems and service jobsthat could be done, you would never get a chance to ride.

I always try and give you a tech tip that helps you spend less moneyon service and repairs not just telling you when to spend more moneyon your bike. In this customers case the work was more costly than hisregular service charge, but spending an extra few hundred dollars nowsaved him what could have been thousands if the bearing had failedand went thru the engine taking out the oil pump or worse, so dontthink that asking a mechanic or a friend to ride your bike and give theiropinion on how your bike runs or drives is embarrassing, its not. Itsjust one more way to be safe and make owning a motorcycle just thatmuch more of a enjoyable experience.
