Greetings Spirit of Northwestern!

Welcome to the 2021 edition of the “Best Soundin’ Band in the Land,” the Spirit of Northwestern! After more than a year of adjustments and unknowns, we are looking forward to establishing ourselves in our new normal. You will notice a few changes in our band this year but we will embrace them, learn, and build from them as top organizations do. I am extremely excited to work with all of you, to march, to make music, and to finally reconnect as one band again.

To our new members, welcome to the Spirit of Northwestern! You are part of an incredible family and we encourage you to get involved and apply your talents! You have an opportunity to impact and influence the future Spirit of Northwestern. Feel free to lean on your student leaders, upper classmen, graduate assistants or directors at any time. This is a monumental transition in your life and we are here for you. Stay up to date on our social media by subscribing to “Current Members of the Spirit of Northwestern 2021” on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram pages! Also, be sure to subscribe to our texting service from Remind (directions on how to sign up on page 11).

We have two great shows planned for 2021. The directors always consider all of our audiences when planning and put together two entertaining shows.

Our first show is a mix of country hits that will be performed early in the season. Even the “not a fan of country music” folks should enjoy these selections! Our fanfare will be based on Stand By Your Man by Tammy Wynette, then some other hits like, 9 to 5 by none other than Dolly Parton, Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks, and a big ending on Carrie Underwood’s Before He Cheats.

The second show is called “Inferneaux” and all of the songs are based on fire. Selection include: Hot in Herre by Nelly, Jimi Hendrix’s Fire, Firework by Katy Perry, and then close it with a mix of Shostakovich’s The Fire of Eternal Glory, and Stravinsky’s Firebird.

The summer band camp reporting dates are included in this newsletter. Please take a moment to review these dates so you are certain not to miss any of the camp. The weather is always very hot during camp and into the first month of school. I strongly encourage you to participate in some outdoor activities over the summer to acclimate yourself to the heat. You will also want to get into the habit of drinking lots of water.

The entire performance schedule for this year is also included in this newsletter. Some updates may occur but please take the time now to look through the schedule and make sure you are available for every performance.

From the FieldHello, Spirit of Northwestern! If we have not met yet, my name is Dr. Oliver Molina and I am one of the Assistant Director of Bands here at NSU. This last year has been difficult for all of us but we made it. I am looking forward to an as close to normal marching band season this fall with the Spirit of Northwestern. The band directors have been working hard to find several ways to ensure a successful year. Having worked with college marching bands for several years, I know we will strive for excellence and greatness no matter the conditions we find ourselves in. I hope this season and especially the game day experience will be fun for everyone, from the audience to the football team, and especially for us, the band. There are great things in store for this season and I cannot wait to get started. The drumline held two audition clinics in April and May. The line is almost set and I am excited to work with them in more detail. We will also host two summer camps to prepare for band camp in the fall. At these summer camps we will work on solidifying fundamentals but also learn pregame music, the drum cadence, and lot tunes.

Although I will mainly be working with the drumline, I look forward to meeting each and every one of the members of the SoN. I am terrible with names but feel free to come up to me and introduce yourself. I will do my best to learn your name and make myself available to all the members of the band. For me, band is all about family and the lifelong connections we make with each other.

If I have learned anything over the last year it is to make the most with what we have. I assure you that myself and the rest of the band staff and leadership will continue to work hard to make this year a memorable one. I look forward to seeing all of you in August, especially the incoming freshmen class. I hope you will find Natchitoches to be home as I have over the past six years. Go Demons! Fork ‘em!

From the GuardGreetings to the 2021–2022 Spirit of Northwestern Demon Heat Colorguard members!

We are so excited that you will be joining us this coming year for another fantastic and exciting marching season. There are a few transitions this year in the Demon Heat staff. The two of us, Jena Elfer and David Steele, will take over from Dr. Estelle Murr as the directors of the colorguard. Dr. Murr will still be part of the Demon Heat staff and lead the way for our artistic design.

From David: Personally, I am thrilled to start this new and exciting experience with the Demon Heat Colorguard. This will be my first season working with the Demon Heat and I cannot wait to see what we learn, accomplish, and achieve together. As we transition into this year, I want to reassure all of you that my main goal is to continue in the traditions and successes that this World Class program is capable of and known for. The Demon Heat Colorguard is an exceptionally gifted program, and I cannot wait for the opportunity to collaborate, learn, and work with all of you.

Jena Elfer will also step up as a director of the Demon Heat. She will continue to lead as the day-to-day instructor for our hard-working program. As many of you already know, she is full of talent, tenacity, determination, and experience. I plan to learn as much as I can from her this first year as I start to understand the program better. I am also excited that Estelle Murr will continue working with us this year while simultaneously training me in the administrative aspects of the program. Estelle is incredibly skillful and gifted and I am exciting to learn from her also. Rest easy knowing that Jena, Estelle, and myself share the common goal of providing you with a rich and rewarding experience this season where you can learn, grow, and perform at your absolute best potential.

From both of us: As we head towards band camp in August, please be mindful of the following: make sure you are a member of our team Facebook page, double check that you are enrolled in the appropriate courses so that your scholarship can be credited appropriately, be ready with the appropriate payments for band camp and supplies, have appropriate guard attire for band camp (shoes, gloves, undergarments, etc.), and that you stay mindful of your summer fitness and cardiovascular goals. It is essential that you are hydrated, physically fit, and capable of giving 100% during band camp. If you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] and [email protected].

We are excited at the opportunity for us to get to know all of you this season and we are very much looking forward to working with all of you. Welcome to and welcome back to Northwestern State University and the Spirit of Northwestern!

Demon Dazzlers Demon Dazzlers

Greetings! My name is Michael Lomeka, the new director of the Demon Dazzlers. I am a Juilliard graduate and am so excited to be a part of the NSU family. One of my fondest memories at Juilliard was the close quarters shared by all artists: actors, musicians and dancers. Post Juilliard credits include Broadway, Off-Broadway, touring with Mikhail Baryshnikov, and dancing with Celine Dion and Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.

The officers and I are very excited to work with all of you this year. If you are a returning member, welcome back. If you are a new member, welcome to the Demon family!

We have a lot of great things planned for the team this year and we cannot wait to get started. You will need to report for camp on Thursday, August 5th. Housing will be ready for you then. We will have a group dinner the night of the 5th and begin reviewing material on the morning of the 6th.

You should have received an e-mail from Dazzlers Captain, Sarah Talbot. This e-mail includes your uniform information, fundraiser information, and important dates! Please contact Sarah or myself with any questions that you may have before the fall semester begins. We will see you soon!

Fork ‘Em!Michael Lomeka

From the Ladder Hey, band!

Welcome back! We are so excited to welcome everyone home after this unprecedented year that we’ve had. We are so thankful to have had the opportunity to have band last year, but there’s nothing like getting back into our regular activities and performing for the people of Natchitoches and high schoolers all over Louisiana. While we are progressing towards “normal”, we will still be taking health precautions such as social distancing, disinfecting, and wearing masks. We are ecstatic to welcome everyone back to Natchitoches and to get back to what we do best. To prepare for the year, here are some things that you need to know before band camp:

• Get into the habit of drinking lots of water! We all know that Louisiana heat is tough in August, so start preparing now.

• Speaking of heat, start spending some time outside to get acclimated!

• We all know that band camp is full of long days of playing your instrument, so get those chops back up! Spend at least thirty minutes a day building them back up if you haven’t played your instrument in a while.

• Make sure that you’re up to date on all the Spirit of Northwestern information via social media. If you haven’t joined yet, make sure to join the “Current Members of the Spirit of Northwestern” Facebook page.

We already know that this year is going to be one of the best for the Spirit of Northwestern, and we can’t wait to get back to performing with you all. Please continue staying safe and enjoying the rest of your summer. We’ll see y’all in August!

And as always, Fork ‘Em, Demons!Abby KentKaci WaguespackChloe Farrar

Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority Incorporated welcomes you to the Spirit of Northwestern!

We are a co-ed sorority that serves the NSU band programs on and off the field. We participate in service projects like CAPA clean- ups, uniforms, band setups/tear downs, assisting with water during camp and practices, and fundraisers to help provide more for the band. Through those activities and many more, we are able to strengthen our bond through sisterhood.

Tau Beta Sigma helps members learn valuable life skills, such as time management, communication, and leadership, which helps members be prepared for life after college. It is truly an honor to be selected to serve and Tau Beta Sigma can’t wait to serve the full band this year.

Feel free to talk to any sister to get more information.

School Loaned Brass Instruments:In an effort to keep these instruments looking and sounding their best for the next several decades, you will be required to wear gloves at ALL rehearsals and performances. There are three options available to you:

1. Purchase the standard gloves that we have used for performances. Tau Beta Sigma will be selling these for a nominal fee – but it will take

several pairs to last the entire season.

2. Purchase a band practice glove – also available from Tau Beta Sigma. These are a little thicker and have non-slip “beads” on the palms and fingers. This is probably the best route to take.

3. Purchase your own glove from somewhere else, like a batter’s glove (leather, but that’s OK) for usually around $20 at a local sporting goods store.

4. Student must provide their own mouthpiece (except mellophone), and valve/slide oil.

To help protect against scratches and dents, we will have the cases lined up on the sidelines at all rehearsals. Whenever the horn is not in your hands, it’s in the case!

School Loaned InstrumentsUniversity owned instruments will be issued at band registration. Please remember, if you use a university instrument, you are responsible for any and all repair.

• Flute: All members will march piccolo (provided)

• Clarinet: A very limited number of clarinets are available if you do not own one. You are responsible for mouthpiece, reeds, and ligature.

• Saxophone: A very limited number of saxophones are available if you do not own one. You are responsible for mouthpiece, reeds, ligature and neckstrap.

What are the times of the summer band rehearsals?A complete schedule of rehearsals is posted on the SON website home page. However, from the time you report, you will be busy from approximately 7:00 a.m. each day until 8:30 p.m. Excuses from rehearsals are granted on an in-dividual basis and must be related to a problem with academic scheduling or a health issue. Regardless, all requests for excuses must be done by email to Mr. McDonald at [email protected]. When will I be allowed to move into my housing unit? When you report for summer band rehearsals at the time listed above, a representative from housing will be present to check you into your housing unit. You will have time that afternoon, prior to the beginning of rehearsal, to go to your dorm and move your items into the space.

How much does it cost to be in band? There is a $35 “Activity Fee” that is due on the first day of summer rehearsals. This fee covers your Band Ball cap, Son T-shirt, and SON marching shorts plus some other incidentals.

When does the SON rehearse during the fall semester? The SON rehearses on MWF from 3:30 p.m. until 5:20 p.m. We will always have a rehearsal on the morning of a home football game as well.

What are the policies of tardies and absences from rehearsals or performances? Please read carefully the section on “Attendance Requirements” in the Hand-book of Policies and Procedures posted on the SON website. It clearly defines attendance expectations. Basically, don’t ever miss and always be on time and you’ll be fine when the grades are issued at the end of the semester.

What is the attire for summer rehearsals? It will be extremely hot outside and, sometimes, cold in the band room. For outside rehearsals you should wear shorts, t-shirts, a hat, sunglasses, sun-screen and tennis shoes with socks. Flip flops, sandals and boots, etc., are not acceptable at marching rehearsals. You MUST wear tennis shoes or you will be told to leave the field and change shoes. The temperature in the band room and Student Union can sometimes be “cool,” so if you are “cold-natured,” it is recom-mended that you bring a pull-over or light sweater.

Are meals provided during summer rehearsals?Meals are not provided during the week. However, the four orgs plan to feed the band on a couple of occasions. The Iberville Cafeteria will be open and you can purchase meals there for a nomi-nal cost. There are also a few eating establishments across the street from campus.

Northwestern State University Sports Medicine Acknowledgment of Insurance Policy

Name: Sport: Date:

As a student-athlete participating in athletics at Northwestern State University (NSU) you are insured under a secondary insurance policy for injuries sustained while participating in intercollegiate athletics for NSU. NSU has partnered with Natchitoches Regional Medical Center (NRMC) to be the official provider of Sports Medicine. Secondary insurance coverage pays the remaining portions of medical bills after the student-athlete’s Primary Insurance carrier has made its payment.

As a student-athlete at Northwestern State University, it is your responsibility to inform the Athletic Training Staff of any changes in your Primary Insurance status when it happens. Failure to report any change in your Primary Insurance coverage could result in nonpayment of any injuries that might occur while representing NSU as a student-athlete. Also, a student-athlete will not be cleared to participate in any games, practices, or weights/conditioning sessions until the Parent Information Form is completed in full, including a copy of the front and back of the insurance card.

The NRMC Coverage is ONLY in effect when a student-athlete has suffered an injury during a school sponsored athletic game or practice. It is also not in effect for any pre-existing injury. It is the student-athlete’s responsibility to reveal all pre-existing injuries with the Northwestern State University Sports Medicine Staff.

THE NRMC Coverage is a closed PPO network and has a participating list of providers. Any student-athlete or parent that chooses to go outside the NRMC network for any medical treatment or services without prior approval of the Medical Director and Head Athletic Trainer will be solely responsible for the cost of all medical claims. For further information regarding this policy, please reference the Student-Athlete Handbook.

The undersigned, by signing this release, hereby certifies that the undersigned has read and fully understands the conditions herein provided and has disclosed all pre-existing injuries.

To thee, our Alma Mater, Loyalty!
