Dear Member:

Happy fall! After the brutally hot summer, the idea of fall seems refreshing to me. Maybe it’s the start of a new school year or the beginning of football season. No matter the reason, I’ve always associated fall with fresh new beginnings.

At Catholic Life, we anticipate a busy fall. Here are some important topics that you, as a member, may need to know.

Financial Rating Affirmed

For the 36th consecutive year, A.M. Best, a respected insurance industry analyst, has affirmed our A-/Excellent rating. The rating confirms that we are safe, strong, and secure. Please see page 4 for more details.

Medicare Open Enrollment

If you are eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance and wish to change your coverage or provider, the open enrollment season kicks off October 15. We invite you to turn to page 7 to learn more about the direct-to-consumer plan that we offer.

Seminarian Scholarship Program

We recently awarded scholarships to young men studying for the priesthood. Since 1987, we’ve provided financial support to 137 men who are studying at 18 seminaries worldwide. Please see page 11 for this year’s recipients.

All American Scholarships

One of the many benefits of membership is our All American Scholar Program. In 2020, we’ll award a $1,000 scholarship to 35 members who will be graduating from high school. Please see pages 16–18 for the rules on how to apply.

In closing, we thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your family. We hope that you will continue to rely on the products and services that we offer to help you protect your family and to meet your financial goals.

Sincerely,

A.M. Best Company, an independent insurance industry rating agency, has reaffirmed Catholic Life Insurance’s financial strength. Effective July 10, 2019, A.M. Best rated Catholic Life Insurance’s financial stability, security, and management performance as A-(Excellent) with a stable outlook. This is the 36th consecutive year that Catholic Life has earned the “Excellent” rating.

The rating is based on a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the organization's balance sheet strength, operating performance and business profile. Insurers in the excellent category are considered to have an excellent ability to meet their ongoing obligations. Moreover, a stable outlook indicates a low likelihood of a rating change due to stable financial/market trends.

In their financial strength rating rationale, A.M. Best stated, “The stable outlook reflects a very strong balance sheet.” In reference to capitalization, Best analysts’ wrote, “The Society maintains a very strong level of risk-adjusted capitalization for its insurance, investment and business risks.” They continued, “Catholic Life Insurance maintains sufficient liquidity as its liquidity ratios are in-line with industry averages as of year-end 2018. CLI continues to grow a surplus each year.”

For the 13th year, Catholic Life Insurance is doing what it can to help Catholic Schools raise needed funds. This year, we’re supporting 58 schools from nine dioceses through the Catholic School Sweepstakes. Our goal is to raise more than $1 million.

“This is our way of giving back to our faith-based community,” said President Belz. “100% of the $9 million that has been raised thus far through the program has gone directly and immediately to the schools.”

Students are selling $5 raffle tickets that will be entered into a drawing that will take place at the Home Office on February 14, 2020. The grand prize winner will have the choice of a 2020 Truck, a 2020 Sedan or a pre-paid $20,000 VISA card. Additionally, every participating school will have a $1,000 Prepaid VISA Card winner. Catholic Life prints the raffle tickets and all marketing materials as well as underwrites all prizes.

To support Catholic education, please buy a ticket from one of the participating schools.

Open enrollment seasons for Medicare Supplement Insurance is just around the corner. Beginning October 15 through December 7, the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is the time each year when you can review your coverage and make changes to your plans. In 2018, Catholic Life was the first to offer a completely direct-to-consumer Medicare Supplement Insurance product. We recently sat down with President Belz to talk about this new member benefit.

Q: Tell us about Medicare Supplement insurance from Catholic Life

A: We are excited about offering Medicare Supplement insurance. Like the overall U.S. population, our members are aging. They want and need Medicare Supplement insurance.

Our goals in offering this product are:

▪ To provide a product that benefits our members by helping them save money

▪ To build awareness about Catholic Life Insurance

▪ To generate leads for our Agents

That’s why we partnered with a large insurance carrier to develop this product. We wanted to offer the best coverage at an affordable rate.

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called a Medigap plan, helps pay some of the health care costs that Medicare doesn't cover, like:

▪ Copayments

▪ Coinsurance

▪ Deductibles

And like Medicare, eligibility for Medicare Supplement insurance begins at age 65. Because the US government highly regulates Original Medicare, the primary difference in Medigap plans between carriers is price and service. Prices may vary depending on your geographic location or your health.

Q: What does direct-to-consumer mean?

A: Direct-to-consumer means that our members can go online 24/7 to catholicmedicaresupp.com or call 1-844-633-6565 to purchase coverage. In most cases, you find out within minutes if you qualified. Direct-to-consumer also means that this product is not available from your Catholic Life Agent. It is only available online or on the telephone.

Q: Why can’t I buy this product from my Catholic Life Agent?

A: Our Agents are experts in life insurance and retirement annuities. Those products can be complicated with many different types and options. You need someone helping you put together the right plan for your family to achieve your financial goals.

Meanwhile, Medicare Supplement insurance is the same for every carrier. The only difference is the service your carrier provides and the price you pay.

Q: What if I have a question when I am purchasing coverage?

A: Because we partnered with another insurer to offer this product, we are taking advantage of their experienced call centers. By calling 1-844-633-6565 or using the online chat feature, you can speak with individuals who specialize in Medigap plans. Members who have reached out to the call center have found them to be very helpful. Many have reported significant savings from their current plan.

Q: What if I have a question about a claim?

A: Catholic Life is committed to providing members with first-class service. If you have a question after you have purchased a Medigap plan from Catholic Life, simply call 1-877-888-0796. Again, highly trained individuals who understand Medicare Supplement insurance will answer your call.

If you cannot remember the number to call, you can always access sales or service through the Catholic Life Insurance home office telephone system. By choosing Option 8 on the menu, you are connected directly to new Medicare supplement sales; Option 9 connects you to the service number.

Q: Will I be able to keep my doctor?

A: Yes, as long as your physician or provider accepts Medicare, your Medicare Supplement insurance will also be accepted.

Q: When is the best time to enroll in a Medigap plan?

A: The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is generally during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. For most people, this period starts the month that you turn 65 and have Medicare Part B, and goes for six months. During this time, you are guaranteed to get coverage, regardless of any health issues you may have.

Q: Should I switch from my current Medicare Supplement insurance plan to Catholic Life?

A: It depends. Sometimes, as your health and financial needs change, you may realize that your current Medigap coverage is no longer a good fit for you. There can be good reasons to consider changing Medicare Supplement insurance plans:

▪ You’re dissatisfied with your Medigap insurance company.

▪ Your plan premiums have gotten too expensive.

▪ You want a plan with less coverage because you’re paying for benefits you’re not using or don’t need.

▪ You need more coverage now than when you first enrolled in your plan.

However, you should proceed cautiously. If you switch outside of the open enrollment period, you will have to undergo medical underwriting to determine your eligibility. If your health is poor, you may not qualify for coverage. We recommend that you keep your current coverage until you receive approval from Catholic Life.

Q: Why should I purchase a Medigap plan from Catholic Life?

A: Why not? As a member-owned and operated organization, we’re committed to providing the best products and services to help our members meet their financial goals.

2019 SEMINARIAN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDEDFour first-time and ten repeat scholarships were awarded for the 2019-2020 academic year through the Msgr. Henkes and Msgr. Stuebben Seminarian Scholarship Funds. Both non-profit funds are designed to help pay for seminary tuition and expenses. Since 1987, more than $420,000 in scholarships funds have been awarded.

Joseph Baltz of St. Benedict, Oregon and Raymond Pendleton of Vatican City State, Europe were awarded a first-time $2,000 scholarship through the Rev. Msgr. Albert George Henkes Seminarian Scholarship Fund.

Baltz is a Theology III seminarian with Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon. He plans to serve the Diocese of Santa Fe. Pendleton is currently a Theology I seminarian at the Pontifical North American College in Europe. He is studying to serve the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

Repeat scholarships were also awarded to past winners Samuel Bass, and Christopher Smith, whom are studying at the Pontifical North American College, Dalton Ervin studying at the Pontifical College Josephinum, and Fernando Ricaud-Cavazos studying at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston.

This scholarship honors the late Msgr. Henkes who served as Catholic Life’s Spiritual Advisor for 27 years. The scholarship is open to any resident of Texas, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Mississippi who is enrolled in a Roman Catholic Seminary. Scholarships totaling approximately $218,000 have been awarded through this non-profit fund since its establishment in 1987.

Angel Aguilar and Ian Robbins were selected as first-time recipients of the Rev. Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben Seminarian Scholarship. Aguilar is currently a Theology III seminarian studying to serve the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Robbins is also a Theology III seminarian studying to serve the Diocese of San Antonio.

Repeat scholarships were awarded to David Chacko, Michael Ezeoke, Michael Coronado, Pedro Martinez, Joseph Moreno, and Jorge Verduzco. All of Msgr. Stuebben Fund recipients attend Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas.

This scholarship fund was established in 1994 in honor of Catholic Life’s former Spiritual Advisor, Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben. Established to help future priests in their journey towards ordination, this non-profit fund has awarded scholarships totaling $202,000 since its founding.

This scholarship is open to students studying at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas.

In early August, Central Texas residents watched in horror as the Church of the Visitation in Westphalia, Texas was destroyed by fire. This historic church was the spiritual home for the 350 members of our Westphalia Branch.

You can help rebuild the Church by donating to a fund established by the Diocese of Austin. Donations will be used

for the immediate needs of the parish, as well as on-going expenses that the parish will encounter as it rebuilds.

Send your donation to the diocese at Church of the Visitation Fund, Diocese of Austin, 6225 E US 290 HWY SVRD EB, Austin, TX 78723. Please make checks payable to the Diocese of Austin with “Church of the Visitation” in the memo line.

Help Rebuild the Church of the Visitation

Mark your calendars. The 97th Catholic Life Insurance convention is just around the corner. The two-day event will take place July 24-25, 2020, in San Marcos, Texas.

Members gather every two years to elect board members, vote on changes to Catholic Life’s Bylaws and celebrate another successful year. Branches, depending on their size, may send up to four delegates to the biennial convention.

Their agent outlined the following benefits: If they choose the annuity option, they will no longer need to pay taxes annually, since annuities are only taxed when the funds are

contributed to during their working years has left her with a stream of income for retirement. Connie has a $100,000 CD at her local bank,

which she has earmarked for her grandchildren. While she is currently in excellent health, Connie worries about the future. She wants to

put her money to work for her, and at the same time, she would like to have access to these monies for her long-term care.

If Connie were to consider a Single Premuim Whole Life Plus (SPWL Plus) for $100,000, she would have a death benefit of $199,047.

Additionally, she would be able to access up to 90% ($179,142) from her certificate if she needed it for home health or nursing care. Also,

her “break-even” will be in approximately five years with a cash value of $102,782 at age 70, $119,233 at age 75 and $152,564 at age 85.

Summary

Our new SPWL certificate brings early cash value growth, higher death benefits to pass on to your heirs' income tax-free, and an opportunity to outperform many fixed annuities in the current marketplace.

Our new SPWL Plus offers a maximum death benefit of $370,000, access up to 90% of your death benefit if you can not perform 2 of the 6 activities of daily living, an income-tax-free death benefit of 11/2 to 2 times your initial deposit in many situations.

During this season of Ordinary Time we focus on our individual vocational call as

Christians. Today’s reflection on the Apostles Creed considers “vocation” in the light

of the first creedal statement: “I believe in God the Father.”

The significance here is God’s unique name: the Father. A father is essentially

relational – surely an authority, but an authority both intimate and concerned. Jesus

would most clearly reveal God as Father, but already in the book of Exodus, God’s

fatherly character is evident: when the Israelites cried out because of their oppression

in Egypt, God heard, calling Moses as His chosen prophet to help set them free

(Exodus 3). Moses’ vocation of liberation, like Jesus’, would flow from his connection

with the Father-God.

This connection was not immediately apparent to eighty-year-old Moses when he

looked up from tending his sheep to see a burning bush that wasn’t consumed. That

is how everyday life can unexpectedly invite us to discover God’s presence. When

Moses peered into this mystery, God spoke, and in the remarkable conversation

that followed, a strikingly human custom took place: the exchange of names. God

called out Moses’ name, and Moses asked the Name of the One who was speaking

to him (God replying: “I AM” – the altogether free One). This ordinary man and this

free, intrinsically relational God were connected in a profoundly unbalanced “first-

name relationship” – it was, after all, God’s inscrutably mysterious Presence that

transformed the place into “holy ground.”

But in that divine-human conversation God called Moses to enter the mystery – to

lead His people out of Egypt. As always, God invites us both to faith and to a willing

response. Moses did not quickly leap into this dangerously privileged vocation.

Resistance abounded: Is it really God calling? Do I trust Him enough to follow where

He leads? “Here am I – send Aaron!”

Thus it is with all genuine vocations, for we must know God’s intimate concern before

we throw in our lot with Him. When we confess: “I believe in God the Father,” our

faith statement carries an invitation to vocation, and we ask: Is this really God or just

an illusion? Am I willing to pay the cost of saying Yes to Him? With the authority and

expectation of a good Father, God awaits our answer.
