FINANCEFinancial Plan - What Is It? And Why Do I Need It? – NEW

Session #1 Thursday, 4:15 – 5:30 p.m.

In this course we will explore a real comprehensive financial plan. This is the type of plan that a fiduciary

would prepare, in order to portray an accurate snapshot of a person’s current financial position, and help him or her plan out various goals, objectives and plans. The plan is a roadmap that helps show someone the roadblocks that might be in the way, while also highlighting the opportunities that one can take. Going far beyond rates of return and assets, instead the plan dives into all six areas of the full “financial person.”

Dan Zagata Dan Zagata is the Managing Director of Evershore Financial Group, an independent comprehensive financial services firm located in Orlando, Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton. Dan brings 15 years of experience working with professionals, businesses and non-profits to help them realize their financial potential and goals. Dan earned a B.A. in Economics from Bentley University, Boston, and earned his D.B.A. in Finance from the International School of Management, Paris, France. He also holds a graduate certificate of Financial Planning from University of Miami. In addition, he has earned the Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Consultant designations from the American College and is a Chartered Life Underwriter.

Jeffrey L. GoldsteinJeff Goldstein is a Central Florida native. After completing his B.A. at the University of Central Florida, he began his career in the financial services industry in 2013. Jeff currently holds his Series 7, Series 66, and 2-15 licenses. He is also an active member of the Orlando Science Center Young Professionals and dedicates much of his energy toward giving back to the Central Florida community, coaching a youth soccer team and playing on multiple teams. Jeff is committed to helping individuals, families and business owners meet their financial objectives by developing investment strategies around their individual objectives.

“There may not be words to fully express the gratitude in my heart. I could not have asked for a better environment in which to teach!”

Investments 2.0 – NEW

Session #2 Thursday, 4:15 – 5:30 p.m.

This is an advanced investing course focusing more on the technical side of investing and real returns. We will focus on the factors that contribute to overall return as well as the impact of fees and internal fund costs. Although we will not discuss recommendations, we will look at “past performance” movements and how they affect the investor’s belief and choices going forward. As a hot topic of discussion, we will dive into intrinsic metrics and debate the age old question of value versus growth, as well as the self-limiting return strategy of certain options.

Retirement Beyond the Numbers – NEW

Session #3 Thursday, 4:15 – 5:30 p.m.

Factors that could influence happiness in retirement and stressors that may change situations (such as health events, motivation, loss of loved ones and others) will be discussed in depth. The course will focus on cognitive maintenance, the digital divide (elderly population vs. ever changing technology) and other barriers not financially related.

Session #3 Tuesday, 2:45 – 4:00 p.m.

Drugs and alcohol surround us – underage drinking, drunk and impaired driving, the opiate crisis, marijuana use, addiction, pain pills, recovery and so much more. Are these just youth problems? This course starts with the assumption that most of us are concerned with drug and alcohol abuse and want to do something. The focus is on the continuum of care – from prevention to intervention, and from treatment to recovery. We will explore the reasons for substance use, the nature of problems, why some people become dependent and helpful strategies for action. We will focus on enhancing competence, confidence and commitment through our own understanding of our personal experiences and values.

PERSONAL ENRICHMENTBridge: Responding to One No Trump Convention or No Convention? That is the Question – NEW

Session #3 Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (2-hours)

Bridge is a fascinating, enjoyable and lifelong pastime which research studies show may help people sharpen mental acuity and lead a healthier and happier life. So it’s no wonder that bridge players keep trying to improve their game! One No Trump is a great opening bid since it is so descriptive – indicating both a narrow point range and the shape of the hand. Yet it is often easier for the partnership to make game in a major suit rather than in no trump. In this course, we will explore several conventions that will help the partnership reach the best contract after a One No Trump opening. In Class 1, we will investigate the Stayman Convention, which helps the partnership find an eight-card major fit. In Class 2, we will learn how to use Jacoby Transfers to tell our partner that we have a five-card major; and in Class 3, we will explore some of the variations of the conventions, such as transferring to a minor suit or dealing with interference from your opponents. If you’re a player who wants to expand your playing prowess, this course is for YOU! Class size is limited to 20.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics – NEW

Session #3 Thursday, 2:45 – 4:00 p.m.

This course seeks to prepare participants to become more informed consumers of the statistics that bombard us daily, from claims about drugs on television commercials to predictions about Electoral College votes. The course will examine when can we trust (or be skeptical about) what the public thinks about issues when measured by survey questions, how we can know what a population looks like when observing only a sample from it, why the predictions about the recent presidential election were wrong and the often hidden characteristics of such simple statistics as mean, median and percentage change.

Robert W. PearsonRobert Pearson taught applied statistics at the University of Pennsylvania, authored the textbook Statistical Persuasion, has written numerous articles on the use and misuse of federal statistics and worked at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago, an M.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He has taught at Catholic University, Columbia University and Barnard College.

The White House: An Idea and Ideal Realized – NEW

Session #3 Tuesday, 1:15 – 2:30 p.m.

From its earliest inception, The Executive Mansion was to be an important symbol for the new American republic. The White House, as we know it today, two and a quarter centuries later, is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. This course focuses on the history of the iconic mansion, its architecture and ultimate evolution to the home we know today. Together, we will explore the mansion itself from its earliest days in the late eighteenth century, to its near constant modifications as times progressed leading to its eventual gutting and on to the present day. Through engravings, photos and stories, this course will help us develop a deeper appreciation for this national treasure.

Mark Hayes Mark Hayes is a recent transplant to Celebration, having spent nearly three decades in and immediately around the nation’s capital. Towns & Places from Daytona Beach to St. Augustine – NEW

Session #2 Tuesday, 2:45 – 4:00 p.m.

Daytona Beach may be known for its hard-packed sand where auto races were hosted for over 50 years, but did you know it started as a citrus and sugar cane plantation in 1787? St. Augustine is the oldest city in America, but it wasn’t founded by Juan Ponce de Leon. It was actually founded by Spanish conquistador, Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565. In addition to the history of these two cities, there’s also a lot to explore – from alligator farms to wineries! Come and learn about these popular cities and everything in between.

Towns & Places in Tampa, St. Pete & Vicinity

Session #3 Wednesday, 2:45 – 4:00 p.m.

Most of us were not born and raised in Florida, so we’re not familiar with the history or sites to visit in the Tampa, St. Pete area. Did you know that Tampa was originally named Fort Brooke? And Peter Demens (Pyotr Dementyev) brought the railroad into the area, and as the winner of a coin toss, he got to name the land after Saint Petersburg, Russia. There are so many places to visit in the area, such as the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Solomon’s Castle, Florida Railroad Museum, Ringling mansion, art and circus museums and Loews Don Cesar Hotel. Come and learn all about the area – just an hour or two drive from Celebration. This course is a repeat from Spring 2017.

Treasure and Havana's Keys to Florida's Treasured Past – NEW

Session #3 Tuesday, 4:15 – 5:30 p.m.

Havana, Cuba, was the center of Spain’s commerce soon after Columbus’ discovery. From 1500 - 1800s, Mexico’s and South America’s New World’s wealth of gold, silver and precious gems passed through Havana every year for three hundred years as the Spanish galleons made their way up Florida’s coast back to Spain. Havana was considered to hold the keys to the Caribbean and to the wealth that kept Spain’s empire afloat. Follow the “money” from the strongholds of Havana as the Spanish galleon, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, set sail to eventually become the richest Spanish Colonial shipwreck ever recovered.

VISUAL ARTS & CRAFTSBeautiful Letters: Calligraphy – NEW

Session #2 Wednesday, 1:15 – 2:30 p.m.

The art of making beautiful shapes and lines was not lost on Picasso, who as a child could never master the skill of writing an alphabet “letter” because he only wanted to draw the lines, spaces and shapes he saw. Calligraphy’s objective is to make lettering fun to look at and fun to do. We will explore the use of calligraphy pens and techniques to make fancy letters that may (or may not) become words, sentences and even paragraphs. Join us for an elegant and beautiful way to write! Materials Fee: $15. Class size is limited to 20.

Dolores Russo Dolores Russo received her B.A. in Education/Visual Arts at Central Connecticut State University and a Master's in Gifted Education from Norwich University in Vermont. She has been an art educator for over 25 years having used her talents and skills for lettering signage onsite at Connecticut’s Greater Hartford Open for over 18 years. Having learned her calligraphy skills from one of the top 10 calligraphers in the country, she creates lettering and graphic poster designs for Celebration’s Art & Wine Strolls. A creative offering for the bashful artist! Fabulous coloring books are all the rage right now. Their wonderful designs are nothing more than elaborate doodles. Doodling with a just a bit more thought and purpose than when you are on the phone can be meditative and relaxing … filling in our doodles with color to bring life to them equally fun and restorative. Meryl will discuss a little bit about how to make our doodles as cool as the coloring books you can purchase and talk a little bit about how to make our color choices have the most impact. But mostly we will use this time to keep calm and doodle on! Meryl will supply a pad of marker paper for each participant and some coloring utensil options to share in class. However, you may wish to bring your own water-based markers for the most vivid color. The best ones to choose have two ends, one end being thin tipped and the other either a brush or chisel-tipped end. Materials Fee: $15.
