We will lead a necessary conversation about how race, law and violence, or ra-cial violence has been and continues to be an integral facet of American law and society . Albert Ponce

Unleash Your Writer’s Voice: A Creative Writing WorkshopThis Creative Writing Workshop is a fiction course for high school students interested in harnessing, devel-oping and sharing their creative writing skills in a sup-portive and imaginative environment . We will read and discuss pieces of short fiction and poetry, perform a number of fun writing exercises and – most important-ly – create our own works of fiction, poetry and spoken word . Harnessing and honing our voices in short fiction can be a lengthy and daunting task . We know what we want to say, but how can we develop our voice to best articulate the depth and breadth of our writing? In this course, we will take inspiration from the best voices in fiction, merging the close examination of literature with creative writing in order to inform and inspire our own authorship . Specific attention will be given to round-table discussions of not only the featured texts, but of our own short fiction which will be workshopped and read aloud, culminating in submission-ready drafts . In-structor: Katie M . Zeigler’s award-winning short stories and nonfiction essays have appeared in A Clean Well-Lighted Place, Fish Anthology and Stanford Magazine . She has also shared her fiction as a featured writer at the Peninsula Literary Society and Why There Are Words . Zeigler graduated from Stanford University with a BA and MA in English Literature and completed coursework at Oxford University . She is a writing pro-fessor at Diablo Valley College and Literary Consultant to Town Hall Theatre . Kate Zeigler

HISTORY

Europe 1789-1848Europe 1789-1848- This class continues our study of Western Civilization and covers the time from the French Revolution followed by Napoleon and his wars, and ends with the Revolutions of 1848 . We will discuss the Congress of Vienna which was the attempt of the nations of Europe to settle the problems from the Napo-leonic wars and provide a stable society of Europe . Our question is how successful was the Congress of Vienna in meeting its goals? What effect did nationalism have on European nations? Which nations were winners and which losers of the Revolutions of 1848? Gay Joyce

Three Who Made a Revolution: Lenin, Trotsky, StalinThe year 1917 is historically significant as it represents the hundredth anniversary of the Russian Revolution leading ultimately to the overthrow of Tsarist Russia and the emergence of communism and the Soviet Em-pire . The radical phase of the Russian Revolution which brought the Bolsheviks to power was the result of the energy and persistence of three incredible revolutionar-ies: Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin . This class seeks to ex-plore how the personality of each, and their perspective backgrounds became critical to the Bolshevik success . Each carried simultaneously within themselves shad-ows of the past which would lead to an even more horrific controlling society than that of the Tsars . Their archetypes, though distinctive, were complementary: Lenin, the Philosopher; Trotsky, the Fiery Heart; Sta-lin, the Iron Fist . Come and let’s explore what drove them: their motives, their ethnicity, their secularism, their cultural context and their idealism . By doing so we can acquire a better understanding of the psychology/sociology of revolution critical to understanding what’s happening today in our own world as democratic values come under attack . Women Spies of World War IIThe unknown, unheralded important fighters in World War II were women spies who provided quick informa-tion about Nazi movements, the number of soldiers in any province, munition, trucks and planes . They were just housewives who didn’t know how to shoot a gun, much less jump out of an airplane over Vichy France to hook up with the French Underground fighters and, in some cases, become their leaders . They went into the cities to drink beer with the officers and keep their ears sharp and their eyes open to all possible informa-tion . PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS

Dizziness of Trump WorldThe Trump 2016 election has thrown America into po-litical dizziness, heightened by the cultural divide, it has created a new normal in which half or no-truths become the modus operandi of the White House . Com-pounding the problem is that the dominant party, rather than calling the executive to task for his hyperboles, ac-tually enables his “misdemeanors and crimes” to con-tinue . Come and let’s take a closer look at who is Trump: family background, real estate adventurer, as well as the key experiences, influences and events that have molded him . Likewise, let us put Trump within a cul-tural/historical context in which the party system is in gridlock, and many traditional Americans feel that their world is fast disappearing, and saw in Trump’s primary histrionics their salvation . We will conclude “Dizziness” by asking the question where goes America, what does a Trump presidency say about the current/future health of the United States, and how can America recover the enduring values of unity and compromise epitomized by the Founding Fathers . Arthur Scott

Pragmatism: A Philosophical DispositionTypically associated with the American philosopher William James, Pragmatism has roots in European and, even more important, in the American colonial challenges of surviving on the frontier of the “New World” . What matters in such environments is not cerebral criterion of “truth” - what matters is what works . Pragmatism asserts that the human mind cannot attain to a final Truth in regard to reality; our theories - whether scientific, religious, or political - are one and all provisional, and we can assess them by the effects they have on our lives . The course will address the history and contemporary relevance of Pragmatist claims . Bill Garrett

Thinking through MulticulturalismWe live in days of dissention . An intolerance for diver-sity has been loudly asserted - and from several bases . There are conservatives who deny climate change and evolution, who are resistant to immigration and global-ization . There are liberals who forcibly shut down any dissent from their strict principles . There are scriptural liberalists who want their religious values translated into public policy . Amidst this cacophony of certainties, how are we to proceed? Are we to be intimidated into accept-ing the premise that criticism of cultural practices is a species of bigotry? The course will consider a variety of alternatives . Bill Garrett
