It is human nature to think about our accomplishments, our work, and even our lives based on what we do and how we do it. However, I believe it is more important to reflect on why we do what we do, rather than the “what” or “how.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Eagle Ranch welcoming our first child, and even longer since I first came to Georgia back in 1982. When I look at our “why” for Eagle Ranch, there are two motivations that stand out.

In starting Eagle Ranch as a young man, I wanted to be part of something that was bigger than I could imagine or accomplish on my own. I wanted others to see this ministry as a tangible witness of God’s sovereign power.

The second part of our “why” is that, every day, we have the privilege of being the hands and feet of Jesus to a hurting world. Jesus was always seeking out those who were struggling. He stepped into the lives of people like the leper, the woman at the well and even the disciples, entering their pain and calling out the best in them. At Eagle Ranch, we work each day to help hurting children look beyond their struggles to see the greatness that God has instilled in them.

God gives us all an incredible opportunity to join Him in this healing work. Thank you for your faithful partnership with us over these years.

Reflections

Sincerely,

Edwin J. Staub Founder and Executive Director

a special woodturning class. Members teach the skill as part of the school’s exploratory education program, enabling students to explore and develop their talents. The Chattahoochee Woodturners will hold a special fundraiser at the 2015 Marketplace, November 5-7, at the Gainesville Civic Center. Proceeds from the sale of the club’s beautiful one-of-a kind pieces – from bowls to birdhouses and much more – will benefit the Ranch. Eagle Ranch School has expanded its schedule this year to include a special class dedicated to reading and comprehension skills. The class will use READ 180, which offers group and individual instruction, online assessments of progress, books and exercises proven to raise reading achievement for struggling readers.

The READ 180 program emphasizes compre-hension beyond general language arts. Content includes science, social studies and literature, and moves students gradually to more complex text.

Reading Tops Back to School Priorities

“I have a younger brother and sister, and I love reading to them now,” said Chase. “After doing this program, I got the idea that I could read to them. My parents were really surprised because they’d never seen me do that before.”

“I didn’t realize how much READ 180 would help me, but my reading has really improved,” he continued. “It’s completely changed my attitude about reading.”

At the start of his 8th grade year at Eagle Ranch School, Chase used to dread being called upon to read aloud. “I was struggling a lot, and I was embarrassed to read in class,” he remembered.

This year Chase, 15, is a confident 9th grader, who considers reading among his favorite activities, thanks to the READ 180 program at Eagle Ranch School. Chase started READ 180 last year. The program combines group work with other students, exercises on the computer and independent reading assignments. For Chase the results were dramatic.

“My reading level went up 200 points from last year,” Chase said. He now enjoys reading every-thing from comic books to novels. More importantly, his improved skills have helped in his relationships.

I Read to My Brother and Sister Now

Early results from a trial in the 2014-15 school year were promising. Nearly half of the students at the school moved to more advanced levels of reading and comprehension.

“The results from our trial implementation were so significant, we felt we needed to move forward with dedicating a full class period to reading,” said Eagle Ranch Director of Education Jon DeWaal. “It's now a separate class in addition to our language arts program."

New teaching positions for the READ 180 program were made possible thanks to a donor, who provided three years of funding to help launch the program.

triu mphReturning to Triumph

the most breakthrou ghs in my life

After high school, Chrissa started college, got married and even moved overseas with her husband, who was in the military. In 2012, she gave birth to her son Jacob. Then, things took a turn.

Her marriage fell apart and her stepfather, the only dad she had ever known, died of leukemia. Back in the United States, Chrissa felt lost. She did all that she knew to do – return to the teachings she learned at Eagle Ranch.

“Just being at the Ranch makes you feel closer to God. It’s where I’ve had the most breakthroughs in my life: in my relationship with God, and my relationship with my mom,” reflected Chrissa. “One of the biggest things I learned at Eagle Ranch is that God is in control.”

She continues to return to a verse that got her through difficult times when she was at the Ranch: In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? - Psalm 56:11.

Chrissa also learned about hard work and perseverance through her work with horses at the Ranch.

“With a horse, you have to gain their trust. Before you can work with them, they have to know they can trust you. They are sort of set in their ways. I had to learn to keep trying and to keep working.”

Today, Chrissa considers her life a triumph over adversity. She returned to Georgia Gwinnett College, where she receives support through Eagle Ranch’s Education Assistance Program. The criminal justice major has her sights set on law school.

“I want to make a difference in the lives of women and children.”

Chrissa realizes that problems will come in life, but she feels prepared. “The Ranch doesn’t solve your problems; it helps you better handle them. I wouldn’t be the mom, the daughter, the student or the person I am today if it weren’t for Eagle Ranch.”

Just bein at the anch makes ou feel closer to God. t’s where ’ve had the most breakthrouhs in my life: in m

relationship with God, and m relationship with m mom.

Life since Chrissa Lynch’s 2008 Eagle Ranch graduation has had its ups and downs.

One of the biggest things Ilearned at Eagle Ranch is

that God is in control.

Eagle Ranch welcomes Andy Nelson as its first Director of Spiritual Life. Nelson last served as youth pastor and part of the teaching team at Spanish River Church in Boca Raton, Fla. Prior to that, he served as the Student Ministry Director of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gainesville.

“I’ve known about and loved Eagle Ranch for a long time. The mission of helping children and families in crisis to glorify the Lord is something that I wanted to join. It's clear to see something powerful is happening in this place,” Nelson said.

As Director of Spiritual Life, Nelson will be responsible for pastoral care, discipleship, and the overall spiritual outreach to children and families served by the Ranch.

“We are a Christ-centered ministry, and we felt it was important to have a position in our organization that is dedicated to inspiring others on their spiritual journey,” said Eagle Ranch Founder and Executive Director Eddie Staub. “Andy’s knowledge of our community and his experience in working with youth will be a great asset to the children and families we serve, as well as our staff.”

Making Life Better through Love & Grace

Nelson received his bachelor’s degree in speech communication from the University of Georgia. He is currently completing his master’s studies in religion with Reformed Theological University. Andy and his wife, Emily, have four children, and both originate from the Norcross, Ga. area. Andy is an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia football fan and enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.

“At the end of the day, it’s people knowing and understanding the love of God and the grace of God that will transform their hearts and their lives,” Nelson said.

To see Andy talk about his new position and role, visit EagleRanch.org/Andy.

Celebrating 30 Years: Founding InspirationA simple wooden frame in the Eagle Ranch office holds a decades old napkin scrawled with a single sentence. Copied from a sign hanging in Pastor Randy Pope’s office, the quote is from esteemed author and theologian Dr. John Edmund Haggai. When Eagle Ranch was just a dream, these words inspired Eddie Staub to persevere through many challenging days. Today, the quote is a reminder that Eagle Ranch has always been, and will continue to be, for God’s glory.

Eddie met with Dr. Haggai last year to let him know how much this quote

has meant to him over the years.
