Green Power is in our Backyard Green Power is a program that generates electricity from renewable resources such as solar, wind and landfill gas, and is offered by Horry Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper. Green Power is powering right now in Horry County: In 2001, Horry Electric Cooperative partnered with Santee Cooper and Horry County Solid Waste Authority to provide energy created through methane gas emissions in the Horry County landfill, now a 3.3-megawatt facility producing clean, usable electricity. Myrtle Beach became the state’s first Green Power City, purchasing up to 5% of their annual power usage from the landfill’s electricity generation. Of the four Green Power solar demonstration projects in S.C., two are located in Horry County: a PV installation at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, the first Green Power site in the state, using four bus pavilion roofs, with a 16-kW generating capacity; and the 311-kW Grand Strand Solar Station in Myrtle Beach, capturing energy from solar panels installed both on the ground and on various building roofs. In 2008, students at Aynor Middle School in the Horry County School District became one of 20 school sites hosting a solar photovoltaic array. These Green Power Solar Schools encourage their students to share information and findings with the other participating schools while learning about alternative energy sources. North Myrtle Beach has the first wind turbine connected to the grid. The 2.4-kW system produces about 500-kWh of electricity per month in optimal conditions, enough to power almost half of a typical residential household’s needs. Each of these Green Power projects represents a strong commitment from Horry Electric Cooperative to the power of alternative energy. Become part of this exciting future! Members can buy a 100-kWh block for an extra $3 per month and any additional blocks at an extra $3 a month each. Commercial businesses can purchase 200-kWh blocks for an extra $6 a month each.
