Dear Friends, My message is simple: thank you! Those two words cannot fully convey the profound and heartfelt gratitude of our Board, our clinicians, our clients, and me. You have empowered us to offer the best of care to hundreds of your friends and neighbors. Our clinicians are 27 psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, clergy, and other professional counselors with an average of 26 years of experience! Because we have so much expertise under one roof, we can deal with many issues. Imagine a man who has lost his job. He becomes depressed, thinking no job equals no worth. A tighter budget leads to loud arguments with his wife. Their son, watching his world fall apart, begins to act out in school. We can offer counseling for the man, marriage therapy for the couple, and child/family therapy for their son. And, we can do it not only for those who can pay well, but also for those who cannot. All of this because of you! We hope you enjoy this newsletter—the first of what we hope are many exciting, new ways to connect with you and let you know what is going on here at TCS. Thank you for joining us in the care of our community. We could not do it without you. Sincerely, The Rev. Peter K. Dear Friends,

My message is simple: thank you!

Trinity Counseling Service (TCS) is a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)3, community

counseling agency providing comprehensive and compas-sionate care to residents of the greater Princeton area.  Our unique combination of highly trained and licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, counselors and pastoral counselors are dedicated to providing effective mental health therapy to all in need regardless of their ability to pay, making TCS a unique resource in the Princeton community.

TODAY IN MENTAL HEALTHTCS Joins the Effort to Combat BullyingBullying seems like a topic that has been around as long as playgrounds and classrooms. Today, however, it is no longer glossed over as a “kids will be kids” paradigm. The implications of bullying prevention are clear, with countless studies showing the damaging short, mid and long term impact of bullying on children’s mental and physical health.

To spearhead community efforts, the Federal government has put forth a formal bullying prevention program that they recommend communities and schools implement as a way to approach the topic. Whether it comes from the top down, or a more grassroots level, one thing is clear about budding prevention programs: giving a voice to the problem and empowering young people to be leaders in prevention is critical to long term change.

These recommendations did not fall on deaf ears. Beginning in 2011, Trinity Counseling Service’s Training Confident Student (TCS) Leaders program has worked in collaboration with John Witherspoon Middle School to foster leadership, promote respect and combat bullying in our community’s schools. The program, which costs approximately $28,000 per year, guides a cohort of middle school students through structured weekly workshops overseen by TCS clinicians. In a statement about the program, Principle Jason Burr stated that the students involved in the program have “blossomed into stronger students and better leaders as a result” of the program and that recent surveys of parents and students showed increased confidence, deeper levels of engagement and a higher level of comfort amongst their peers from the students who participated.

This has been an exciting and transformative year for our events. The Stimpson Cup, aptly named in honor of Executive Director and golf fanatic Peter Stimpson, held at Bedens Brook Golf Club in June, brought out all pros in the TCS community for a fun-filled day in support of Trinity Counseling Service’s work in the Princeton community. The event featured a nine hole competition and then a putting contest to close out a spectacular day. Thank you to all who participated!

TCS is going green! This and all subsequent newsletters are available now in digital format. Please help us go green

by providing us with the best available email address to receive a small number of digital updates from us each year. Send an email to: [email protected].

Thank you!

On September 7th, TCS hosted Embrace, Engage, Empower: An Evening to Benefit Trinity Coun selingService at Princeton’s newly opened and most talked about farm-to-table eatery, Agricola. Chaired by Georgie Leddy, the night was a smashing success, bringing in generous support and raising awareness about the important work of Trinity Counseling Service. The event also highlighted and raised funds for TCS Leaders, a program created by TCS clinician Molly Palmer, Psy.D., and geared towards combating bullying and fostering leadership for middle school-aged students in Princeton schools.

CLINICIAN’S CORNERMeet Bernard Hodgdon, MSSW

Bernard holds a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and has been practicing family and couples therapy for thirty years. Bernie recently left a position as Clinical Director with Catholic Charities to devote more of his time to Trinity Counseling Service.

In your experience, what makes TCS unique in the world of mental health services?Trinity Counseling is affordable for everyone and clients are repeatedly impressed by the staff, counselors and the building itself. TCS has always brought in the best clinicians to work here, and that contributes to the spirit of care at the agency. We provide holistic bio, psycho, social and spiritual support—and that makes a big difference to our clients. They feel connected here on multiple levels.

What are you currently focused on professionally?I am currently enrolled in a certification program for Emotionally Focused Therapy. I am previously certified in a number of other therapy techniques and programs.

What do you do to unwind outside of work?Every Friday, a group of colleagues and friends gets together for some fun on the golf course. We have what we call “Paradise Rules”—no one takes the game too seriously but it helps us all relax after our week.

TODAY IN MENTAL HEALTHBack to School Sheds Light on Mental Health in StudentsWhile most parents are focused on making sure their college aged kids are settled into their dorm rooms and have picked all the right classes, they might be overlooking an integral first step as their kids adjust to life away from home— identifying the university or college’s mental health service options. The American Psychiatric Association warns that “while the time of transition to college can be exciting, it can also be challenging and can be even more challenging for students coping with mental health issues.” In a 2011 report, the American College Health Association found that almost 1/3 of students reported feeling so depressed within the past year that it was difficult for them to function. Nearly half of respondents reported feeling overwhelming anxiety.

Concern about the mental health of college students is not unwarranted. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college aged students in the United States, preceded only by automobile accidents, beating out alcohol and drug overdose by a significant number. These stats have fueled much discussion countrywide on mental health service provisions in schools, with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) producing College Students Speak: A Survey Report on Mental Health. This survey’s recommendations urge colleges to work towards destigmatizing the process of seeking mental health services by having open discussions during orientation and on-going throughout a student’s tenure at school about services available to them and how to seek help.

As the school year kicks off, parents are encouraged to have open and on-going conversations with their kids regarding stress levels, encouraging them to seek counseling if they are beginning to feel depressed or overwhelmed by any aspect of college life. Students who are provided a solid plan, coupled with support from their parents and the institutions they are attending, will be more likely to seek help before it’s too late.

If you have questions about mental health related issues, please contact Trinity Counseling Service to speak with a certified clinician about you or your family’s needs.
