Dollie O’NeillTau Beta Sigma National PresidentStrategicplanninghasbeenoneofthemainfocusesthisbienniumoftheNationalCouncil.Ithasbeenroughly12-13yearssinceTauBetaSigmasatdownandhadastrategicplanningsession.InNovemberof2009thatNationalCouncilmadethetimetositdownandlookatoursororitywiththe“BigPicture”inmind.WereviewedourMissionStatement,VisionStatementandthencameupwith6maingoalsforourorganizationtosinkourteethintoandrunwith.Yournationalleadershavebeendiligentlyworkingtowardsthesegoals,settingtheminplace,implementingthemandmovingforward.However,thereisonecomponentthatremains,andthatismakingadifferencefromindividualsonthelocallevel,alumniandactivemembersalike.

Goal 1: Increase number of active chaptersWehaveaVisionofhavingmorechaptersinvolvedinTauBetaSigma.Sohowarewegoingtogetthereandwhatcanonepersondo? •PositivelyrepresentyourchapterandTauBetaSigmainyourbandprogram.Thisissomethingthatissosimple,yethaveahugeimpactonpotentialrecruitinginyourbandsandtheimageofourorganization. •Beinggreat“Stewards”ofourColonies!InthepastcoupleofyearsTauBetaSigmahashadthehonortohavecolonyinstallationsandgainmorechapters.Takingcareofourcolonies,educatingthesenewchaptersandmemberspositivelyisaHUGEopportunity!RemembertheseindividualsarelayingthefoundationfortheirchapterintheirbandprogramanditisNOTEASY!Somakesurethateveryadvisingchapter,advisor,orjustaneighboringchaptersthatwearetakingcareofthisgrowth.Thisisthefoundationforourfutureandreflectsonourpotentialfornewcolonies. •TalkingtoyourbandfriendsatCollegesandUniversitiesthatmaynothaveaTauBetaSigmaChapter.WehavehadseveralsuccessstoriesofafriendstalkingaboutTauBetaSigmatoanother,andthenthegoodnewsspreadlikewildfire!Ifyouknowoffriendsatotherschools,havethemspeaktotheirDirectorofBandsaboutTauBetaSigma.

Goal 3: Enhance our image on a National scope •ServingBandstofullest!Howweserveourbands,evenonthelocallevelcanenhanceourimageforoneDirector,whichnetworkswithotherDirectorsandsoon.ServingourbandsshouldbeournumberonefocusandreviewinghowwedothisforimprovementcanaffectTauBetaSigmaNationally. •WorkingwellwithourBandDirectors.DoingourpartasindividualstoworkwellwithourDirectorsonourcollegeanduniversitiesspeaksvolumesofourorganization.

Goal 4: Increase Sorority membershipWealsohaveavisionofnotonlygrowingmorechapters,butmorememberswithinourchaptersandwithinouralumninetwork! •Recruit,Recruit,Recruit!Onememberinyourchaptercanrecruitagreatbandmembertobepartofyourchapter,andyouneverhowmuchthatmakeadifferenceinyourchapter,yourbandsandforourorganization.Seekouttheleaders,thepositiveindividualsandthosethatenjoymusicandservingbands! •Qualityvs.Quantity!Withinrecruiting,alwaysthinkofretentioninthebackofyourhead.Having10newmembersthatwillstickaround,rolluptheirsleevestoservebandsandarepositiveinfluenceinyourchapterisbetterthan20newmembersthatdonotgiveback.Thisiseasiersaidthandone,butagoodthingtokeepinmindwhenrecruitingforyourchapter. •Havingasolid&positivemembershipeducationprogram(MEP).HavingastrongMEPcan“make”or“break”yourchapter….whatdoesyourMEPcurrentlylooklike?Reviewallofournationalpolicies,guidetomembershipeducation,etc.allfoundonlinethroughourwebsite.ReviewyourMEPwithyourSponsor. •TurninyourMEPtoyourDistrictCounseloreveryFallforreview.Thiscanhelpprovideinputforyourchapter and ensure MEP is solid!

Goal 5: Increase fundraising development and income •YOUstayinvolved!BecomeamemberoftheTauBetaSigmaAlumniAssociation(TBSAA)oraLifeMember!Whenyoustayinvolvedbypayingthesedues,itgoestoourprogramssuchasscholarships,archives,etc. •AlumniNetworking:doyouknowofalumnifromyourlocalchapterthatwouldliketogetbackin-volved?SharewiththemthemanygreatprojectsthatTBSAAisdoingorremindthemofgettingtheirLifemembership.YOUspreadingthewordcanmakeadifference.

Goal 6: Eliminate hazingHazinghasbecomeapoisonepidemicinTauBetaSigma!Simplysaid,hazinghasnoplaceinourorganizationandisthequickestwaytobringa“goodthing”down. •StandUpforyourself&yourchapter!Ifhazingishappeninginyourchapter,youcanspeakuploudly.Peerpressureistoughinourcollegeworld,sobeinganonymousisrespectedaswell. •Reviewournationalpolicieswithallmembersandmembershipcandidateseveryyearinyourchapter.Ifyouaredoingthis,thenYOUaremakingadifference,andifyouarenot,thenyoucanstarttodaybyputtingthispracticeinplace. •HazingWorkshop:utilizetheresourcesonyourcampus!EverycampushasaStudentLife,GreekLife,StudentAffairs,etc.departmentandwithinthesedepartmentsarefacultyandstaffthatconductandhostahaz-ingworkshopforyourchapter.Makethisresourceworkforyourchapter!Scheduleaworkshop,evenifitisonceayear,thiswillhelpeducateyourmembers!

2011 Kappa Kappa PsiNational Convention Sneak PreviewDerrick MillsKappa Kappa Psi National PresidentOne of the primary responsibilities of the National President is to coordinate and plan the National Convention thatconcludeseachbiennium.Therehavebeensomanygreatmemoriesandmomentsfromeachconvention,suchasNationalIntercollegiateBand,workshopsandbusinesssessions.AsyourNationalPresident,ithasbeenanenjoyablechallengeandthrilltoplanthe2011NationalConvention.

IhavebeenworkingverycloselywithTauBetaSigmaNationalPresidentDollieO’Neilltomakesurethatallconventionattendeeswillhaveagreatexperience.ItisimperativethatthetwoNationalPresidentsworktogethertocoordinateinordertomaximizeourmeetingspacesandbusinessneeds.DollieandIhavebeenplanningourconventionsbeforewewereelectedpresidents.Puttingourschedulestogetherwasaseamlesstask.WethensentourcombinedagendaandeventlisttoNationalExecutiveDirectorLt.Col.AlanBonner(USAFret.)tocompile.Afteracombinedconventionscheduleiscomplete,ColBonnersendsthescheduletotheCrownePlazaHotelinColoradoSpringsfortheirreviewtosuretheyhavetheresourcestoaccommodateourconventionneeds.Itisalongandmeticulousprocess,buttheendresultisanationalconventionthatevery-oneattendingorrunningwillenjoy!ThisisaprocessthatdistrictpresidentsarenavigatingwithGovernorsandCounselorsrightnowfordistrictconventions–weallmustplanwellinadvanceforconventions.

WithNationalConventionrightaroundthecorner,Iwantedtoofferyousomehighlightsofwhattoexpect.Therewillbesometraditionaleventsthatyouareusedtoattendingandsomenewevents.Inmy2010FallPODIUMarticleandemailstoactivestudentsandlistservs,IhavechallengedallmembersofKappaKappaPsito“digdeeper”intothevaluesandpurposesofthefraternity.Inthatchallenge,allmembersareencouragedtoexaminethevaluesofthefraternityandusethemasmomentumtostrengthencollegebandsatahigherlevel.AllofourworkwillconcludetogetheratNationalConventionwithanewinteractive,all-inclusiveformatforworkshopsandsessions.HereareafewhighlightsofNEWevents,sessionsandspecialopportunitiesplanedfor convention:

ConcertoCompetition–WewillhavethefirsteverNationalConcertoCompetitionwhereBrothersandSisterswillhaveanopportunitytoperformconcertostoapanelofjudgesatconvention.Thewinnerwillreceiveacashawardfortheircollegebandprogram.

ActiveStudentNationalParliamentarian–ForthefirsttimeinhistorytherewillbeaNationalActiveStudentParliamentariantoworksidebysidewiththeNationalParliamentarian–BoardofTrusteesmemberChrisHaughee.IselectedBrotherHaugheeforhisgreatexperienceandfraternityknowledgetoworkasamentortotheActiveStudentParliamentarianselected.Bothwilladvisemeonallparliamentaryproceduresandhelpruneverysession.

DiversityCelebration–Oneeveningduringconventionwillbeamomentwherewecanallcelebrateourdiversity.WearegoingtohaveafunnightwhereBrothersandSisterscanhavefunperformingforeachother,demonstratinghowdiverseourorganizationsare.BrothersandSisters can perform a skit; play musical instruments, step, or any other activity that makes ourorganizationsunique.

PastNationalPresidentsReunion–Forthefirsttimesince2003,therewillbeanorganizedreunionforBroth-erswhohaveservedasNationalPresidentofKappaKappaPsi.ThisisauniqueopportunitytoexperienceandhearKappaKappaPsihistoryfromthosewhohelpedcreatehistory.

DigDeeper–onFridayofconvention,wewillhaveaseriesofworkshopswherewewillbringallofourworkofthebienniumtogetherandhaverealdiscussionsaboutKappaKappaPsianditsvalues.Usingourfivepurposesasabaseofconversation,theworkshopswillasktoughquestionsandgeneraterealdirectiontomoveKappaKappaPsiforward.

ThesearejustasmallpreviewofsomeoftheeventsplannedforNationalConvention.OurtraditionaleventssuchastheNationalIntercollegiateBand,InteractivePsi(nowcalled“iPsi”),banquetandthealwayspopularfightsongcompetition.IencourageyoutostarttosavemoneylookintoanypossiblefundingNOW!ThisisaNationalConventionyouabsolutelydonotwanttomiss.

How Tau Beta Sigma Can Affect Your LifeStephen Burt Tau Beta Sigma Southeast District PresidentOftentimes,inTauBetaSigma,wealwaysfocusonwayswecanbetterservetheband,waystoincreaseourinfluenceinthecommunityandourcampuses,recruitment,fundraisers,andmanyotherprojectsthatareputonourplates.WealwayssearchforwaystogivebackforallthatTauBetaSigmahasgivenusandwestrivetobethebestthatwecanbe.Butoften,weforgettotakeastepbackandreflectonhowmuchTauBetaSigmahasgivenus.Itisn’tuntilafterour“active”timeinthechapterthatwebegintorealizethefellowship,friends,pro-fessionalskills,socialskillsandrelationships,leadershipknowledge,andmusicalachievementTauBetaSigmareallyprovidesforus.

RecentlyIhadaconversationwithanalumnusofEpsilonAlphaandwhatcameintoconversationwaskindofamusing.Webegantotalkaboutarecentinterviewthatshehadforajobandhowcalm,collected,andpreparedshefeltgoingintoandthroughoutthedurationoftheinterview.Shesaid,“Ican’tbelieveallthoseelectionsprocessesreallyhelpedmeinmyprofessionalworld.”Icouldn’thelpbutlaughandrealizethereareanumberofotherwaysTauBetaSigmareallyhelpsus.

Theclichéanswerto“Whatdidyoulearnfromyourcandidateprocess?”isalways“timemanagement,”butthefact of the matter is, this one skill can help us be better actives in the chapter, better professionals in our future jobs,andbettermembersofsocietywithraisingchildren,workingwithothers,andstayingontopofallthechallengesandeventslifethrowsourway.Beingabletoplanlarge-scaleeventssuchassocials,fundraisers,serviceprojects,andconventionsreallyhelpsuslearntheneededskillsforplanningthingsforourbandprograms,employeeoutings,benefitsforourbusinesses,andsomuchmore.Thisallbeingsaid,wecanalmostshiftourmindsettowhatcanTauBetaSigmadoforme,towhatWILLTauBetaSigmadoforme.Thepossibilitiesareendless.Asweallcontinuetodrawclosertothatdayofgraduation,remembertheseideasandallowyourselftotrulycherishallthatTauBetaSigmahastooffer.

District DayA Tradition Revived and Revamped

For years, District Day has been a day of bonding for the Southeast District chapters, centrally located atGeorgiaTech.From2007to2009,therewasnoD-Day,butin2010,GeorgiaTech’sTauBetaSigmaandKappaKappaPsichaptersworkedtogethertobringbacktheoldtradition.

BothchapterswantedtoreachouttopeoplethatmightnotattendD-Daybecausetheydidnotwanttoplaysportsallday.Insideactivitiessuchasboardgamesandcraftswereplannedinadditiontothetraditionaloutdooractivitiesandcookout.

Manypeoplethathadinitiallyshowninterestinattendingdidnotshowupbecauseoftheinclementweatherandalackofclearrainplan.Thepeoplethatdidattendenjoyedmakinglettershirts,paintingpinboxes,andplayingboardgames.Therewerealsoimpromptustepperformancesbyseveralchapters.“ItwasfuntohangoutwiththeSistersandBrothersoftheSoutheastDistrict,”saidAmyCheben, President of the Epsilon ThetaChapterofTauBetaSigma.“Hopefullynextyearwe’llhavenicerweathersowecandoalloftheoutdooractivitiesthatweplannedtoo.”

DistrictDaywasoriginallyaSixFlagsDayfortheentireSoutheastDistrict,withbrothersandsistersfrom other districts traveling to Georgia for the eventaswell.AftergoingtoSixFlagseveryyearforseveralyearsinarow,itlostitsappealandevolved into a sporting day that revolved around bonding through various outdoor activities such as softballandkickball.

“DistrictDayusedtobeabigdeal,”saidRyanPhelps, the Iota brother that planned D-Day four yearsago,“butthechapteranddistrictchangedalotandattendancefell.”Inanattempttoincreaseattendancein2006,D-Daywasrestructuredwithmoreorganization.ThefollowingyearD-Daywascancelled.GeorgiaTechwashostingSEDConventionandthoughtthathostingtwolargeeventsinonemonthwouldbetoomuch.Afterthat,itwasnotreviveduntilthisyear.

DespiteD-Day’ssuccessthisyear,itisapparentthat inter-chapter bonding did not achieve full po-tential due in part to the lack of large group activi-tiessuchassports.PerhapsforD-DayApril2011,largegroupindooractivitieswillbeplannedandwithabitofluck,theweatherwillbeperfectforsomesportingactivities.

Brothers and Sisters of the SED,

This past spring the Alpha Eta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Beta Xi Chapter of Tau Beta Sigmajoyouslyco-hostedthe2010SoutheastDistrictConventionattheUniversityofFlorida.MonthsofplanningandpreparationwentintotheweekendbybothorganizationsinordertoensurethatallvisitorstotheUFcampusandthecityofGainesvillethoroughlyenjoyedtheirtimehere.

VisitorsbeganarrivingthroughoutthedayFriday,givingeveryoneachancetomeetfriendswhotheymaynothaveseensincethepreviousdistrictconventioninColumbia.Therewasclearlyasenseofeuphoriaandexcitementintheairasalmost1000BrothersandSistersarrivedinGainesville.Conventionstartedwithregistration,thenmovedonwiththeopeningsessions,andconcludedwitheveningrituals.Afterofficialbusinesswascompleted,BrothersandSistersspentthenightoutinGainesvillebowling,eating,andenjoyingeachother’scompany.

Saturdaywaschalkfullofactivities,rangingfrominspirationalworkshopstoofficerelections.Thelessonstaughtintheseworkshopswereallextremelyinsightful,andtheseideaswerebroughtbacktochaptersbyattendingBrotherswhothensharedtheirknowledgewiththechapter.Followingofficialbusinesswasafancyreception,includingaperformancebyaquartetfromtheUFJazzBand.Thisswingandup-tempobeatsetagreatmoodfortheeveningastherewasfood,dancing,andsinging.Allinall,itwasanextremelyentertainingnightforallwiththenumerousactivitiesthatthereweretooffer.

AlthoughSundaywasabriefdayintermsofbusiness,itturnedouttobeagreatclosingdayforconvention.Therewereplentychancesforfinalgood-byesandwellwishes.IpersonallyfoundmyselfeatinglunchwithBrothersfromtheKappaTauchapterfromUSFbeforetheydrovebackdowntoTampa.Itwasagreatconventionhavingalmosteverychapterrepresented,seeingoldfriendsandmakingnewones.Theseexperiences truly are once in a lifetime, as once convention ends there is no going back to recreate theatmosphere.

I strongly encourage all Brothers and Sisters to attendthisupcomingDistrictConventionApril15th-17th2011inAthens,Georgia.IknowthattheBrothersoftheKappaMuchapterwilldoaspectacularjobhostingandshowcasingthebestofAthensforalltheBrotherhoodandSisterhood.FromvisitinganewcitytomeetingnewBrothers, Sisters, and friends, every district convention isunique and should be experienced by all members ofeverychapter.

The fall semester is obviously an exciting time for collegemarchingbands.Notonlyisthereaninfluxoftalented,newfreshmen,weareonceagainplungedinto the hectic routine of rehearsals, pep rallies, and football.Whilethegamedayexperiencecanbeexhaustive at times, the pervading emotion of event is ultimatelyoneofoverwhelmingexhilaration.Thereissomething magical about sharing the performance ex-periencewithournewestCarolinaBandmembersforthefirsttime.Afterall,evenwhenthefootballteamisnotplayinguptoexpectations,itisourjobtoleaveeverythingonthefield.MakingthefirstyearmarchersfeelcomfortableintheirnewhomeawayfromhomeisabigpartofwhatthesistersofEpsilonAlphaattempttoaccomplishatthebeginningofschool.WorkingjointlywithourbrothersinZetaChi,wespendourfirstcoupleofweeksdrivingpeopletolocalrestau-rants during meal times, hosting game nights, and facilitatingWal-Martruns.

The fall semester is also a great time to reach out to highschoolmarchingbands.Thisyear,thesistersofEpsilonAlphaandthebrothersofZetaChivolun-teered at the Esprit De Corp Marching Band Contest inIrmo,SouthCarolina.Helpingoutwitheverythingfrom concessions to parking, the high school com-petitionwasagreatopportunitytostrengthenjointrelationswhileprovidingservicetothelocalmusiccommunity.Goingbeyondtheclearcutserviceaspectoftheevent,thebandcompetitionwasanawesomevenue for encouraging younger musicians not to give up on their love of music once they graduate from theirrespectivehighschools.

Withthisgoalinmind,ZetaChihadatentsetupnearthe entrance to the competition as a center for informa-tionabouttheUniversity’sbandprograms.Addition-ally,sistersandbrotherswerepositionedalloverthehighschoolcampusinordertoanswerquestionsandprovideassistancewherenecessary.Ofcourse,itwasalsoalotoffuntojustwatchthehighschoolmarchingensembles compete; their impressive seven minutes of fieldtimecangetprettyintense.

AssistersofTauBetaSigma,wearealwayswork-ingtowardsthatgoalofbuildinggreaterbands.ThosewerejustacoupleofwaysthatthesistersofEpsilonAlphahavebeengivingbackthissemesterandwearealwayslookingformoreopportunitiestoserve.Afterall,thesearetheveryensembleswhichwerecrucialinshapingusbothasmusiciansandaspeople.

Everwonderwhattheotherdistrictsareupto?HowaretheysimilartotheSoutheastdistrict?Howaretheydifferent?Whilealleventsinalldistrictsaremeaningfulandoftenexciting,we’llstartbyhighlightingtheWesterndistrict.

AsidefromtheirDistrictLeadershipConferenceandannualconvention,theWesternDistricthostsfourstatedays,adayofmusic,andfightsongcompetitions.ThestatedaysaredividedbetweenCalifornia,Arizona,Utaho(Utah/Idaho),andWagon(Washington/Oregon).Thestatedaystypicallyconsistofserviceprojects,bondingevents,andcompetitionsthatencouragesistersandbrothersfromnotonlythewesterndistrictbutotherdistrictsaswelltocometogetherandenjoyoneanother’scompany.

TheWesternDistrictDayofMusicisanannualevent,themostrecentofwhichtookplaceonFebruary6th,2010.Chaptersareencouragedtobeofservicetotheircollegiatemusicprogramsthroughsucheventsascleaning school practice rooms, attending concerts as a chapter, or even paying for accompanists for music majorsintheirschool.Describedas“...adaytocelebratemusicianshipalongsideyourbrothersandsisters,”theWesternDistrictDayofMusicencourageschaptersofTauBetaSigmaandKappaKappaPsitofulfillthemissionofbeingofservicetomusicprogramsandfellowmusicians.

WhiletheSouthwestDistrictmaynothavemanylargeeventsotherthanDistrictConventionandvariousworkshops,thereismuchtobesaidfortheadvicetheyofferotherbrothersandsisters.AndytheArmadillo,theKappaKappaPsimascotfortheSouthwestDistrict,spenttimewiththeLambdachapterofKappaKappaPsi,andlearnedjusthowmuchfunservicecanbe.AnotherbrotherfromDeltaSigmaoffersakeypieceofadvice:“Ifyouattendenoughhazingworkshops,youWILLhavetheanswerstoeveryissuememorized,andDistrictOfficersWILLmakefunofyouforit.”Thedistricttreasurersuggestsafewwaystokeepactivesinvolvedandenthusiastic,includingtryingsomethingnew,adjustingresponsibilitylevelsforchaptermembers,andtraveling.Lastly,andmostimportantofall,thedistrictvicepresidentencourageseveryonetonotforgetaboutthecontinuingmembershipeducationprogram.Itisimportanttomakesurethatallofyourmembersarejustaseducatedinthehistoryoftheorganizationasthecandidates.

Reaching OutAlphaOmega-TBΣFloridaStateUniversity

Thispastyear,oneofAlphaOmega’sfavoriteserviceprojectswassomethingwecallthe“InstrumentPettingZoo.”Forthisproject,sistersthatplayavarietyofinstrumentsgettogetherandgotoalocalchurchduringSun-dayschool.Thesistersintroduceeachinstrumentindividuallyandplayitsothatthechildrenlearnwhateachinstrumentsoundslike.Attheend,thesistersgettogetherandplayschoolsongsliketheWarchantogether.Thekidsenjoygettingtolearnaboutmusic,andthesistersinvolvedlovegettingtosharetheirloveofmusicwithayoungergeneration.

This semester, the Alpha Omega chapter is very excited to have been chosen as the Big Sister chapter to the BetaPhiColonyatFloridaA&MUniversity.Gettingtheopportunitytoworkwithsuchanexcitedandcommittedgroupofyoungladieshasbeenanenlighteningexperience.Ithasstrengthenedthebondswithinthechapteraswellasbroughtaboutnewfriendshipswithstudentsataneighboringuniversity.

Withinthescopeofbothnationalorganizations,theSoutheast District is one of the largest and most di-verse.Beingabletointeractwithsomanyotherchap-ters,eachwithindividualcharacteristicsthatmakethem unique, is something that makes our district so special.Sincethestartof2010,theSoutheastDistricthasseentheinstallationoffivenewchapters,andwestillhavefourcolonieswithinthedistrictworkingtobecomechapters.TheSoutheastDistrictalsonowboaststhelargestdistrictofTauBetaSigmawithatotalofthirtysevenactivechapters.Thisperpetualgrowthis encouraged and is integral to our continued develop-mentasadistrict.

The Iota Rho chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Spelman College was one of the five newly installed chapters within the Southeast District this year.

Another important aspect in the development of both thedistrictandyourchapterisleadership.Ifyoufeelthatyoucancontributetothedistrictinanyway,youshould seriously consider running for a leadership posi-tionthisspringatdistrictconvention.Onasimilarnote,each member should also be proactive and make sure theirvoiceisheardwithinthedistrict.Therearewaystoexhibitleadershipwithinthedistrictotherthantak-inganofficerposition.Networkingandsharingideas

betweenchaptersaswellascontributingtodistrictandnationalpublicationsarebothwaystoshareyourleadershipandtalentswiththedistrict.Leadershipisalso an essential contribution an individual can make to helpbuildtheirchapter.Bringingyourchaptertogetherandbeingabletofocustheirenergytowardsagoalisanimportantgiftyoucanmaketoyourchapter.

Building your chapter through its membership recruit-mentprocessisanotherkeyfactorinitsdevelopment.It’simportanttohaveakeeneyeforfutureleaderswhenrecruitingmembers.Thequalityofyourrecruitedmembersissoimportantsincetheywillultimatelydeterminethefutureofyourchapter.Helpingthecandidatesgrowduringtheirmembershipeducationprocessisalsoofequalimportance.Todoso,theactivemembers of the chapter should be encouraging them to thinkabouttheirfuturewithinthechapterandhelp-ingthemtorealizetheirpotentialasafuturemember.This duty also carries over as the candidates cross and becomenewsistersorbrothers.Continuingtoem-powernewmemberstoleadbuildsagreatchapterthatisstableovertime.Remembertoshareyourgiftswiththedistrict,andwithyourchapter,andtobelookingtoempowercandidatesandnewmembers,sothatyoucancontinuethegrowthofyourchapterandtheSoutheastDistrictinthefuture.

How do you hope hosting this event will change the awareness/perspective of the AmericanCancer Research?KL: WedothistoraisemoneyfortheLeukemiaLymphomaFoundation.WedothisbecauseStevenhascreatedaconnectionbetweenourchaptersandthethousandsofindividualwhoarediagnosedwithLeukemiaeveryday.Althoughitwaspersonallybeforemytime,Ihaveheardthe“oldheads”discusswhatStevenwentthroughashefoughtthedisease.Wedothisbecausehewasnotabletoenjoybeingapartoftheorganizationaslongasheshouldhave.Wedothistoshowevery-onethatlifeisapreciousthing.BeingabrotherofKappa Kappa Psi or a sister of Tau Beta Sigma is a privilegeandanhonor.WeshouldstriveeverydaytofulfillourritualisticvowsandlivethelifethatStevennevergotthechanceto.EvenasthediseasewastakingitstollonSteven’sbody,hestillpartici-patedandservedasmuchashisillnesswouldallow.SeveralbrothershavetoldmethatStevenwasevenburiedinhisKappaKappaPsijersey.

Continually ServingTheLambdaRhochapterofKappaKappaPsiatTennesseeTechnologicalUniversityhasbeenuptolotsofwonderfulthingsthissemester.Wesprucedupourbandroombypaintingafewthingsaroundtheroom,put-tingupnewblinds,cleaningupthewindows,andsprucingthesoundboardsthathangaroundtheroom.Weareworkingonabigfundraiserwewillbedoinginthespring.Weplantobringaprofessionalswingdancebandinwhoareclosetosomepeopleinourfraternity,andhostacommunity-wideswingdance.WearegearingupforourannualAllStarSymposium,whichwehelpruneveryyearthathappensinmidNovember.Also,wearebeginningtodiscusswhatwewillbedoingtoraisemoneyforRelayforLife.LastyearwehadareallygreattimedoingthewalkandcontributingtothedonationourschoolmadetotheAmericanCancerSociety.

Build On SuccessTheSpringsemesterof2010wasaverysuccessfulandexcitingonefortheLambdaRhoChapter.Asaquickoverview,the2ndRedCarnationCasinoDinnersponsoredbySpanglerEntertainmenthelpedraisemoneyfortheTTUBands.InAprilthechapterparticipatedinRelayforLifehereoncampusforthefirsttime,andgainedcampusrecognitionforraisingmoremoneythananyotherorganizationoncampus.

TheTTUSymphonyBandwasalsochosentopremiereapiececommissionedbyKappaKappaPsifortheSoutheastDistrict.ItwasfirstpremieredattheNationalConventionbytheNationalIntercollegiateBandinthesummerof2009.Thepiece,“TwoAmericanCanvases,”isatwomovementworkbyMarkCamphouse.Itmusicallydepictingthecomposer’sviewoftwopaintingsrepresentingAmericaanditsculture.TheperformancewasextremelywellreceivedandwaspremieredattheAprilconcert.ThepremierewasaveryexcitinghonorforthechapterandSymphonyBand.

FoundersDay2010washostedonthefrontpatioofBryanFineArtsonMay6.Therewasfood,games,andagoodtimehadbyall.RaviPatel,Historian,andBradleyTuckergaveabriefhistoryoftheChapter,andKyleChaulk,PresidentElect,sharedafewwordsofhopeandencouragementforthegroup.HesharedhowproudhewasandisoftheChapter,andhowmuchhehopeswecontinuetoupholdourhighstandardofexcellenceandservicetotheTTUBands.LaterthateveningweinitiatedourThetaClass,consistingoftwomembers,ChaseRamseyandDustinJones.ThedaywastheforthanniversaryofourChapter’sinstallation,andthegatheringwasanicewaytocelebrateallofourhardwork,andtorememberwhywe’rehere.

WearesadtoreportthedeathonAugust28,2010ofDr.WilliamP.Foster.Dr.FosterservedasthedirectoroftheFloridaA&MMarching“100”from1946to1998.Duringhistenure,Fosteriscreditedwithrevolutionizingmarchingbandtechniquestoshowcasebandpageantry;manyofwhichhavebecomestandardtechniquesforhighschoolandcollegebands.WhenDr.FosterbecameDirectorofBandsatFAMUin1946,themarchingbandconsistedof16members.By1950,thebandboastedamembershipof100,andtheMarching“100”wasborn.Underhisdirection,theMarching“100”madenumeroustelevisionappearancesandgainedinternationalacclaim.

Atage12,Fosterbeganplayingclarinet,andwhileinHighSchoolwasappointedstudentdirectoroftheSumnerHighSchoolOrchestrainKansasCity,Kansas.HereceivedhisBachelorofMusicEducationin1941fromtheUniversityofKansas,aMasterofArtsinMusicfromWayneStateUniversityin1950,aDoctorofEducationdegreewithamajorinMusicfromTeachersCollege,ColumbiaUniversityin1955,andthehonoraryDoctorofHumanLettersdegreein1998fromFloridaA&MUniversity.WhileattendingTeachersCollege,ColumbiaUniversity,Dr.FosterwasafellowoftheRosenwaldGeneralEducationBoard.

Dr.FosterhasbeeninductedintotheFloridaArtistsHallofFame,theNationalAssociationforDistinguishedBandConductorsHallofFame,theFloridaMusicEducatorsAssociationHallofFameandtheAfro-AmericanHallofFame.HehasalsoservedasnationalpresidentsoftheAmericanBandmastersAssociation(ABA),theCollegeBandDirectorsNationalAssociation(CBDNA)andwasappointedtotheNationalCouncilontheArtsbyformerPresidentBillClinton.CBDNAawardedDr.FostertheCBDNALifetimeAchievementawardinDecemberof2009.InJanuary1973,hewasawardedKappaKappaPsi’sDistinguishedServicetoMusicMedalinthefieldofMarchingBand.
