She patiently instructed them in matters of Bible, prayer, doctrine and piety, all the while “home-schooling” all of them to include subjects like Latin and Greek. John Wesley believed that this was intentional family language in which the more mature believers (fathers and mothers) guide the up-and-coming believers (young men and women) while they both care for and nurture the newest, more vulnerable be- lievers (children). But undoubtedly, in the back of John Wesley’s mind is the example of the loving mother who patiently nurtured their faith and moral character. This month Mother’s Day will be on our minds and there certainly is place for honoring them. Higher still is the need for spiritual mothers of all ag- es who can patiently care for and nurture the learning disciples. It means (without rush) to take someone under your wing and help them read the Bible, pray, be faithful to God and learn about the faith in Jesus Christ. You don’t know if that spiritual son or daughter will also one day change the world as John Wesley did.

Spiritual motherhood

by Rev. Samuel Blanco

In an article titled For the Glory of God in the website “Holiness Today”,

the writer talks at length about the great influence that Susana Wesley had on

her two sons, John and Charles. He explains:

Long before John and Charles Wesley became students at Oxford or mission-

aries to Georgia, much less the leaders of a great revival, the Holy Spirit was at work through their mother’s fervent prayers for her children and through her

tireless efforts to foster in them a deep, personal trust in the living God.

She patiently instructed them in matters of Bible, prayer, doctrine and piety, all the while “home-schooling” all of them to include subjects like Latin and

Greek. By her disciplined instruction and oversight, she instilled in John and Charles the brand of religion that would change the world- close-knit disciple-

ship.

I John 2 uses interesting phrases to speak about the relationships in the

Christian body: little children, young men, and fathers. John Wesley believed that this was intentional family language in which the more mature believers (fathers and mothers) guide the up-and-coming believers (young men and

women) while they both care for and nurture the newest, more vulnerable be-lievers (children). But undoubtedly, in the back of John Wesley’s mind is the

example of the loving mother who patiently nurtured their faith and moral character.

This month Mother’s Day will be on our minds and there certainly is place for honoring them. Higher still is the need for spiritual mothers of all ag-

es who can patiently care for and nurture the learning disciples. It means (without rush) to take someone under your wing and help them read the Bible, pray, be faithful to God and learn about the faith in Jesus Christ. You don’t

know if that spiritual son or daughter will also one day change the world as John Wesley did.
