This month, the Notre Dame family lost one of its brightest stars when Jeannette Lucey was called home to be with our Lord. Jeannette was one of the oldest living alums of Easton Catholic High School, the predecessor to Notre Dame, and part of our alumni family, graduating in 1936. When Jeanette would attend the annual Easton Catholic Alumni Reunion each October, her presence would light up the room. She always had a story to tell or a memory to share and her passion for life was evident to all who encountered her. Jeanette was 99 years old when she passed, just three months shy of her 100th birthday.

Mrs. Lucey and her extended family make up an enormous number of alumni Crusaders. If you include the Hammerstone family (which Mrs. Lucey was one of the Hammerstone children), the Lucey family, and the Dolan family, there are well over 150 individuals who graduated from either Easton Catholic or Notre Dame. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to her twenty grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. This may very well represent the largest number of alumni from any Crusader family and certainly speaks of their dedication and

commitment to Catholic education.

Two of Mrs. Lucey’s daughters became Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. One daughter, Faith who is now known as Sister Jeanette Lucey, is one of our recent Ave Maria award recipients. Each of her children were brought up in a home where God and family were the foundation to all they did. Sitting at her funeral Mass, we listened to a reflection that Mrs. Lucey wrote when her husband passed away. In it, we heard her speak of raising their

children and how flowers need to grow in dirt in order to bloom perfectly, and comparing that to raising children and how it’s “ok for them to get a little dirty sometimes in order to grow beautifully.” She also spoke of how a turtle needs to “stick out his neck in order to get ahead.” All simple

comparisons that shed light on her vision of life as a mother, a wife, a sister and a friend. She led a simple life, raising her children while “letting them get dirty and stick out their necks a bit.” She loved the Philadelphia Phillies, and when her daughter was selected to throw out the first pitch at a Phillies game, friends recall that Mrs. Lucey’s final words were “don’t embarrass the family.”

It is with great pleasure and pride that I write to you as the new Principal of Notre Dame High School. I am grateful to Bishop Schlert, the Office of Education, and the school’s Board of Directors for their confidence in me. I consider this appointment both a great privilege and a sacred responsibility. As I hope you will come to learn, my leadership style is one of collaboration and transparency. I have a deep respect for tradition, while encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. As I wrote to our wonderfully dedicated faculty and staff in my first communication with them, I lead from a place of kindness and civility. While my position often requires me to make very difficult decisions, I try always to remember the words of a sign that hung in my classroom as a young teacher, which read: “What is popular is not always right, and what is right is not always what is popular.” Mindful of this, if we work together as a community of faith and knowledge, and if we take the time to learn one another, to be companions on the journey, then our shared experiences will bring us closer together, and hopefully remind us that we have one collective goal which is to open our hearts and minds to God’s abundant graces, while we instill in students and colleagues alike, a profound respect for the human condition.

Tantamount to my responsibilities as the academic leader of Notre Dame, is my duty to create a warm and welcoming community for faculty, staff, alumni/ae, students, and families. It is very important to me that we treat one another with gentle care and genuine concern. This is a non-

negotiable. It is also of the highest priority that each and every day, in all of our dealings, we remember that we are a Catholic school. Not a high school that happens to be Catholic, but a place where our Catholicity imbues our words and actions, and inspires in us the confidence and conviction to make God known, loved, and served. I know this sentiment is shared by our newly appointed Chaplain, Father Eugene Ritz, who shares our common love for and dedication to Catholic education.

Please take some time to read about all of the wonderful happenings here at Notre Dame highlighted in this issue of our newsletter. I look forward to meeting, and welcoming you back to your beloved alma mater; you are always most welcome here. Until then, I leave you with the words of Saint Teresa of Calcutta - words which I pray we will put into action everyday: “Each time anyone comes in contact with us, they must become different and better people because of having met us. We must radiate God’s love.”

In this love, I remain,

Sincerely yours, in Our Lady,

Andrew D’Angelo, Principal

from The PrinCiPal

continued from cover...

Another love was Christmas. She welcomed everyone to “Lucey’s Manor” and transformed it annually into a Christmas House for all that visited. There was always room at her table for another friend or family member.

As soon as you were in her presence, you knew you had met someone special – one of God’s angels on earth. The Easton

Catholic reunions will have an empty chair this year, and for years to come, but we certainly know that our friend Jeanette will be smiling down on us, sharing a giggle as the memories are told and always smiling. She lived the mission of Notre Dame and remained faithful, loyal and true each and every day. She also lived the “Lucey Mission” of faith, family, friends (and Phillies!). God bless Jeanette Lucey – until we meet again!

All too often, one picks up the newspaper and reads about the troubles with adolescents and schools. We sift through all the “bad news” to find a few good stories. Most looking for financial or business news read the Wall Street Journal, considered to be a leading publication in this area. Low and behold on June 1, 2018, a story was published that supports “why we do what we do” and “what a tremendous gift we give to our kids at ND”! The study, entitled The Catholic School Difference, discusses a student conducted for the Thomas B. Fordham Institute by University of California-Santa Barbara. This study compared the national data on elementary school students collected under the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study for the National Center for Education Statistics. The authors found that due to the emphasis Catholic schools place on self-discipline, students educated in a Catholic school showed far less disruptive behavior than those in public schools. True, there may be other

factors that impact this outcome but the correlation is strong between the focus that Catholic schools put on self-discipline and better student behavior. It also notes that black and Latino students in urban areas show higher graduation rates, higher college enrollment when they attended a Catholic school. They are quoted as saying: “Don’t underestimate the power of religion to positively influence a child’s behavior.” They also note it is a tragedy for the nation that so many Catholic schools continue to close when needed the most.

It is always nice to have our Mission and values reaffirmed by credible sources. We do what we do because we know it is right for our students, our families and our communities.

natalie DeMaRco, nD class of 1979 Natalie currently resides in Plantation, Florida where she is President and Co-founder of Tycon Partners LLC. As a student at ND, she had the desire to be a commercial airline pilot. To prepare, she enrolled in Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s ROTC program after graduating from ND. She credits this experience for reinforcing her “I CAN do anything” spirit and determination. Realizing that the cost was high to become an airline pilot, she re-directed her career aspirations and focused on the financial service industry.

Leaving PA for Miami, FL in 1983 in her Toyota Corolla, she was determined to succeed. After overcoming many stereotypes and challenges she became the co-inventor, founder and CEO of patent-pending media management system technology, Mango Cross Media LLC and founder/CEO of Frontline Investment Consultants. She eventually

took the role of Sr. VP at Fisher Investments, securing over 300 clients and $400 million in assets in her first 4 years. She was ranked in the top 10% consistently and achieved the $100 million Club. She is considered an expert in capital markets.

Her drive in business and in life was always “to make her dad proud”. Her father, who passed away in 2016, was a Marine and instilled in Natalie a sense that if you work hard and stay focused on your goals, you can succeed at anything.

Today, in her company, along with her partner, Glenn Bierman, they offer clients expert advice in corporate structure, corporate finance planning, branding, marketing and business development. They help small to mid-size companies achieve their growth goals, create jobs and provide a pathway to the NYSE with Regulation A+.

Outside of business, Natalie enjoys traveling, her dog “Angel”, visiting with family and friends and service projects to help Veterans, in honor of her father.

Keith GoRDa, nD class of 2011 During the four years that Keith Gorda was a student at Notre Dame, he along with his fellow classmates learned lessons both in and out of the classroom. Keith succeeded in completing his high school career academically in the top 10% of his class. He knew early on that academics were important to achieving his career goals. But, he also learned while a Crusader that staying close to his faith and taking care of the community at large were important to be successful in life.

While at Notre Dame, Keith was a member of the leadership team for ND MINI-THON 2011. To anyone who has not participat-ed in this event at ND, it appears to be a 24-hour fundraising effort that students take part in that on the surface looks like a dance party. To those who have experi-enced THON and especially those who were

members of the leadership team, it is far more work than it appears. This event takes months of preparation; hours of planning, fundraising, soliciting items needed for the event and finally, actually taking part in this 24 hour marathon of dancing and activities all to help raise money to fight pediatric cancer. The 2011 ND Mini-Thon raised $45,000 to help fight the battle. This sparked something inside Keith that is evident still today, seven years later. He learned how to work as a team, set goals, give of ones self and achieve success. Valu-able lessons that pay dividends throughout life. He remarked recently on twitter that his days participating in the ND Mini-Thons were some of his best memories.

Today, Keith works for J.P. Morgan in the Greater New York City area. After his days at ND, he went on to receive a degree from Rutgers University School of Business. He spent some time working in the Los Angeles area for J.P. Morgan as part of the GWM Solutions Team and Morgan Private Ventures.

Throughout his career thus far, he has continued to not only succeed at the company but also “give back” to the com-munity at large. He helped manage the day-to-day financial aspects and record keeping for the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games as part of Los Angeles 2028. He also takes part in the American Dream Fund – Robin Hood organization to help alleviate poverty by assisting in giving immigrants tools to build better lives. He remains part of the Road to Wall Street Program through Rutgers University where RU alums help to mentor current RU students to build connections with Wall Street firms and prepare for their own career paths.

Where Are They Now? ZachaRy hoGan, nD class of 2014 Zachary Hogan was born to be a Crusader. His mother, Sarah, is a 1981 Notre Dame alum and his grandmother, Nancy, is a graduate of Easton Catholic High School, the predecessor to ND. He was raised to be faithful, loyal and true by a family that centers on faith, family and taking care of your neighbor.

While at Notre Dame, Zach was voted by his classmates as a “Born Leader”. He was President of the National Honor Society, a State Champion for the Future Business Leaders of America competition, a member of the ND soccer team and graduated in the top 10% of his class.

After graduation, he was accepted and entered Villanova University to pursue a degree in Finance. While at Villanova, he not only pursued the Finance degree but also completed a major in International Business, a minor in Business Law and a minor in Real Estate. Zach spent a semester in London studying and interning in the financial district and he also spent a summer in New York City interning with JP Morgan. In addition to holding leadership positions in several organi-zations, Zach has worked closely with the administration at Villanova. Most recently, he was honored to be the senior selected to give a speech as part of “Accepted Students Day” to the parents and students who will be attending Villanova as freshmen in the fall.

Zach never forgot his days as a Crusader and what was important to him. One of his greatest memories was qual-ifying for the National FBLA competition while at ND and getting to meet and compete with some of the nation’s finest high school students desiring a future in the business world. One area that troubled him was that other students were not able to take advantage of this opportunity due to the cost of taking part in the event. For this reason, each year he has been a student at Villanova, he has committed to giving back to ND in a unique way. Each year, if an ND student qualifies for the FBLA National event and has financial need, Zach makes a gift to be used as financial assistance for this family

so the student can compete. He believes that he is helping to lay the foundation for a fellow Crusader’s future success and he has helped four students through his efforts.

A recent graduate from Villanova, Zach has accepted a position with Savills

Studley working in International Real Estate. There is no doubt he will take the lessons he has learned from his family, his alma mater and his own tenacity to become successful in all he does in his future.

MaRK tuRDo, nD class of 1993 We often speak of the history or the legacy of our school. Notre Dame is rooted in deep traditions. As alums, we all look back on items we obtained while Crusaders and a rush of memories come back to tell our story. ND alum Mark Turdo has made a career of taking items, putting them together to tell a story, although the story he tells each day through his work date back far longer than our 60 years at Notre Dame.

Mark was named the curator for The Museum of the American Revolution located in Philadelphia back in 2016. He came to the Museum with over twenty years of experience in almost every aspect of modern museum work, from curatorial and programmatic to leadership and management.

While a student at ND, Mark participated in theatre for four years, the Forensics club for three years, Model U.N., scholastic scrimmage team, SADD, Track and Field and the “No If’s, No And’s and No But’s” club for four years. After leaving ND, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Moravian College and a Master’s of Arts Degree in museum studies from Cooperstown Graduate Program, which is a partnership between the State University of New York Oneta and the New York State Historical Association.

He has held positons with the Moravian Historical Society as a Curator/Educator, the Fort Ticonderoga Museum as the Assistant Curator, the Andover Historical Society as Curatorial Project Manager and the Peter Wentz Farmstead as the Curator. He has told many stories through the artifacts he oversees but none bigger than at the Museum of the American Revolution, which officially opened in April, 2017. Mark plays a key role in research, planning and development of temporary exhibitions and rotations in the Museum’s core exhibition galleries. He also collaborates with the program-ming team to develop and deliver on and off-site programs for the public. The museum, which is located in the heart of the historic district of Philadelphia, explores the story of the American Revolution to help bring to life the events, people and ideals of our nation’s founding.

While being interviewed for 6ABC Loves the Arts show, Mark is quoted as saying: “I hope it’s inspiring to everybody. Everything they were talking about 250 years ago, we’re talking about today, and it’s import-ant that people realize; you’re not new to the conversation. You’ve been part of this hopefully all along, or it was interrupted and you need to have your seat at the table again.” History is important to Mark Turdo just like our Crusader history is important to all of us.

Today, the cost to educate a student at Notre Dame High School, including fundraising and fees, exceeds $10,000 per student. We make every effort to assist students through financial aid and scholarships. During the 2017-18 school year, we were able to award over $400,000 through the generosity of our benefactors and grants. Tuition covers the necessities but does not give our finance office additional funds to improve our facilities, increase our technology or expand our academic or extra-curricular offerings.

Here are some ways you, as loyal Crusaders, can make a difference in a student’s ND experience:

• Make a gift to the Crusader Fund annually, which directly helps offset budgeted financial aid and school expenses.

• Consider a gift to the Classroom Campaign to assist ND in purchasing new student and faculty desks, as well as painting, lighting and flooring in each of classrooms.

• Inquire at your employer if they participate in matching gift programs or gifts for your volunteer hours to Notre Dame.

• Consider a gift in the form of stock to Notre Dame, which may have tax savings to you as a donor.

• Consider gifting Notre Dame your mandatory IRA distribution to be used for programs at the school or scholarships, which again may be tax beneficial to you as a donor.

• Consider a family gift in memory or honor of your parents to help our school.

• Consider naming Notre Dame as part of your estate plans. Even a small gift can help and continue to bless students in your memory for years to come.

Because of your generosity, prayers and support, we have grown over the past 60 years to be a leader in educating students and providing Catholic values to students in the Lehigh Valley. Your help ensures that this continues for future generations.

Faithful, Loyal and True. We say these words often at Notre Dame and we teach these lessons to each of our students throughout their four years on our campus. Weaved into the normal class lessons each and every day are messages about our faith, our values, and our mission. Our students have had great role models over the six decades of Notre Dame’s history who have shown them how to live as strong Christians who place high value on family and faith. Each of us has been encouraged to pray and incorporate the teachings of our faith in all we do. If you meet an ND alum, it becomes apparent very quickly that these lessons live on long after their graduation day and have become integral parts of their daily lives. A perfect example is Michael Koury, Class of 1986.

Back in September 1982, the Honorable Michael Koury entered as a freshman at Notre Dame just like every other student that year. He came to our campus with a strong commitment to family and his faith. As a member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church, he was taught early on that his church and his faith are the strong foundation to a successful, happy life. His parents, Michael and Josie, were tremendous role models and his “idols” as a child. He saw them work hard, pray hard and love their family - both their immediate family and their parish family. While at ND, these lessons were reinforced and grew. He became part of the Crusader family and learned that throughout life, no matter the challenge, if you stay true to your values and morals, you will always make the right choices.

Young Michael often listened to stories from his grandfather about his days watching lawyers in Courtroom #1 like Charles Hogan and he became fascinated with the legal system. Little did he know years later, he would be sworn in before 500 people as the 27th President Judge of Northampton County in that same courtroom. While at ND, he was not only a fine student, but also involved in campus life. After graduation in 1986, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Moravian College, graduating cum laude. His next journey took him to Villanova University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate and was named to Villanova Law Review due to his distinguished academic record. His career began at the prestigious New York City law firm of Cahill Gordon & Reindel, where he worked on antitrust, securities and insurance litigation matters.

Michael’s father, Michael Sr., was a longtime teacher and basketball coach at both Allentown Central Catholic HS and

Phillipsburg HS, impacting student athletes with the same lessons he bestowed on his own children. During this time, Michael Sr. also served as a District Judge in Wilson Borough for over 20 years, while his mother continued to run Josie’s Deli located in Easton’s Centre Square. Due to the unexpected death of his father, Michael decided to return to Easton and follow the path of his father. He waged a write-in campaign to replace his father on the bench and, in 1997, was elected magistrate and continued to serve for 12 years. In 2009, he was elected to the Court of Common Pleas of Northampton County and presided over civil and criminal trials. This spring, Judge Koury was elected by his peers as President Judge for Northampton County, an election which included judges with far longer tenure on the bench. Judge Koury noted, “I am honored to have received the support and trust of the members of this Court to be the next President Judge. Although I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues, I’m also mindful of the responsibility that has been bestowed upon me.”

Present at Judge Koury’s swearing in were the heart and soul of Easton’s Lebanese community as well as the entire Northampton County bench. Also joining in the event were various judges from the Superior Court

of PA, Commonwealth courts and retired judges, all showing their support for Judge Koury. Notre Dame held its place close to Judge Koury on this special day as our own Deacon Koury, Michael’s uncle, served as the court crier and Bishop Alfred Schlert, Bishop of the Diocese of Allentown and also an ND alum and former teacher, offered blessings. Judge Koury lives in Easton with his wife Elaine, son Michael and daughters Josie and Rebecca. Faithful, Loyal, and true…..the mission of Notre Dame and the foundation for Judge Koury’s life.

Athletic Hall of Fame Nominations Needed

Athletics have played an enormous role in shaping our history at Notre Dame High School. We have produced some of the finest student athletes in the Lehigh Valley and some of the most successful teams. Our coaches have received local, regional, state and national awards. We have also had many individuals who have dedicated countless volunteer hours to make the experience for our student athletes and fans a positive one.

The ND Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes athletes, teams, coaches and loyal contributors each year at the induction ceremony held during the winter season. A committee, made up of alumni, administrators and athletic personnel, makes selections based on nominations submitted annually. Nomination forms and criteria can be found on the Notre Dame website (www.ndcrusaders.org) under the Athletic tab (select Athletic Booster Club drop down) or by contacting the alumni office at 610-868-1431 x123 or [email protected]. Nominations for the 2019 Hall of Fame Class must be submitted by November 15, 2018.

VETERAN’S AWARD NOMINATION FORMNotre Dame High School is proud to have many members of our school community who have served our country in the military. Each year, during our Veteran’s Day celebration, we invite our military members back to celebrate Mass with us. During this event, we pay special tribute to our “Veteran of the Year”. We invite you as a member of our Notre Dame family to nominate a Veteran that you feel deserving of our award. This individual must be either an alum of Notre Dame, an alumni or current parent of an ND student or an immediate family member. Feel free to attach additional information to this form as needed.
