Hebrews 11:1 This past December, I bought a Bing Crosby Christmas CD and was enjoying his songs, but right after God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, he sang Faith of Our Fathers. I thought to myself, “What does that have to do with Christmas?” and skipped over to the next song, I’ll Be Home for Christmas. A few days later, I was listening to the CD again and decided to listen to Faith of Our Fathers. When it was finished, I played it again and really concentrated on the words and thought about what those words meant. I later researched the history of this song, and found that it refers to the faith of martyred leaders of the Roman Catholic church during the 16 th century, but it could also refer to martyred Christians of today. Around the world, Christians are imprisoned for their faith. They are not afraid of whatever happens to them in order to tell others about Christ. Here are the verses and what God spoke to me about them: Verse 1 Faith of our fathers, living still, In spite of dungeon, fire and sword; O how our hearts beat high with joy Whene’er we hear that glorious Word! Are we ready to suffer for the cause of Christ? Are our hearts joyful whenever we hear the Word of God? Verse 2 Our fathers, chained in prisons dark, Were still in heart and conscience free; How sweet would be their children’s fate, If they, like them, could die for thee. Christians in prisons, free in Christ! Think of Paul and Silas chained in prison, singing praises to God (Acts 16:25). Honestly, I would be angry and crying. Some situations we endure in life seem like we’re chained in prison, but we need to remember that we are free in Christ, and He will see us through those rough times. The words that bothered me in this verse are these: “How sweet would be their children’s fate, If they, like them, could die for thee.” Throughout history, many children, whether they were young or adult children, have died for the cause of Christ. Faith of Our Fathers

Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

I later researched the history of this song, and found that it refers to the faith of martyred leaders of the Roman Catholic church during the 16th century, but it could also refer to martyred Christians of today. Around the world, Christians are imprisoned for their faith. They are not afraid of whatever happens to them in order to tell others about Christ.

Here are the verses and what God spoke to me about them:

Verse 1 Faith of our fathers, living still, In spite of dungeon, fire and sword; O how our hearts beat high with joy Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!

Continued from page 1

I don’t want my children to die, for any reason. I thought about the teens killed at school in Columbine, because they were Christians. But I do want my children to have such a strong faith in Christ that they would be willing to die for Him.

The verse that really spoke to me is this: Verse 3

Faith of our Fathers, we will love Both friend and foe in all our strife; And preach Thee, too, as love knows how By kindly words and virtuous life.

It’s easy to love friends, but I admit, I have serious issues with being friendly to foes, or enemies. By nature, I want to get even with everyone who does evil against my husband and children, or any other family member. How many times have I prayed that God will “take care” of that horrible person? But what about me? Sometimes I’m the foe to someone else. Am I living a virtuous life that would draw others to Christ? Am I kind and loving? Sometimes not, I’m ashamed to admit. We who are Christians would do well to reflect on words like this simple, yet powerful hymn. My desire is for others to see Christ in me and to be drawn to Him. I want enough faith to stand for Christ. What about you?
