Dear Children, Parents and Caregivers,

Today I include an up-to-date photo of progress in the Senior Building Project. It is coming along

beautifully. Within the classroom spaces, new joinery is being added (very sleek—black with birch

highlights) and the highlight windows facing east are going in as I type. They look wonderful. This is

going to be a very inspiring learning environment.

The photo below gives you some idea of progress on the ceiling in the shared space. Five giant

skylights will provide light to this massive space. The skylights will be viewed through pebble

frames of varying sizes—and dotted throughout the ceiling will be an additional sixteen pebbles that

will be lit by LED inserts. It’s going to be spectacular.

All being well, we hope to gain the ‘keys’ to this space in mid to late November, so the current Grade

Sixes should experience at least a few weeks of this new environment. That is the plan, so keep your

fingers crossed!

Teachers who love teaching … teach students to love learning! Here are some examples of passionate ‘teaching and learning' at St Monica's this week!

100!

The Foundation students celebrated 100

Days of School by…….you guessed it

by dressing like they were 100 years

old! Can you recognise the staff and any

of the students?

New

Song!

I always love hearing the choir practice during lunchtime from my

office, but this week I heard some rather impressive singing during

class time! On investigation, I stumbled across the Year 4 music classes

….very enthusiastically learning a new song ……”l’ve been

everywhere”!

Shapes

These Year 1 students have been exploring

Shapes in Maths so they were captured here

using the Geoboard App on the iPad to draw a

range of 2D shapes and discuss their features.

Awesome!

Super Senses!

The Foundation students have been learning about the 5 senses!!!! Look

carefully at this picture …...what do you think is in the container

….which senses are they utilising? Could you put them in order...do

you think touch or sight is more relevant to determining the substance?

Initiative

Remember a previous article on ‘arrays’. It was great to see some

students taking initiative to make their own book of arrays found

around the school! Well done, Phong!

Student of the Week Certificates will be presented at assembly on Friday 5th August, at 3.00pm

With Luke This week I will be looking at the possible awards players can win at the end of

the year. We are getting to the end of the season and some awards will be start-

ing. We all know about the Brownlow, and just to refresh your memory at the

end of each game the umpires vote in a 3,2,1 system. If a player has been sus-

pended they cannot win this award. Each club also has a best and fairest. The

award is named after a legend of the club for example the GWS best and fairest is

called the Kevin Sheedy award after their very first coach who helped establish

GWS. Another award is the Coleman Medal which is awarded to the player who

kicks the most goals in the season. This award is named after the legendary John

Coleman who was a terrific mark of the football. Another award is called the

Norm Smith Medal. This is awarded to the player who has the best game in the Grand

Final. This award is named after the great player and coach Norm Smith. Norm Smith

won 4 premierships as player and 6 as a coach. The next award is the Jock McHale

Medal which is awarded to the coach that wins the Grand Final. This award is named

after the sensation coach Jock McHale who won 2 premierships as a player and 7 as a

coach. The next award is the All Australian team. This is the best 22 players in the

whole AFL put in a team according to the positions they play. The next award is the

Leigh Mathews award which the AFL Players’ Association (which is sort of like the

Parents’ Association) believe is the most valuable player (MVP). This award is named

after the great Leigh Mathews who won 4 premierships as a player and 4 premierships

as a coach. Another award is the AFL Coaches’ Association award. This is when the

coaches vote on the best player in the game and they tally up the votes to see who

wins. Another award is the Allan Jeans senior coach award. All coaches vote on a

3,2,1 basis at the end of the year for the best coach. The award is named after Allan

Jeanes who won St Kilda’s only premiership as a senior coach and won three premier-

ships as Hawthorn coach. The weird thing about this award is despite winning four

premierships Alastair Clarkson has never won this award, imagine how good Haw-

thorn would be if they had a good coach. Another award is the Ron Evans medal. This

is awarded to the best young player of the season. There are some rules to this award.

Each round at the end of the season they choose who was the best young player of the

round, for example this week it was Darcy Moore from Collingwood. The player has

to be under the age of 21 to be eligible for this award. Ron Evans played for Essendon

and was president of the AFL from 1998-2007 and also broke the most goals in a sea-

son record for our local league the EDFL (the Essendon District Football League).

This week’s game I will be discussing the West Coast / Fremantle Derby. Some great players have

played in the games such as John Worsfold (the Essendon coach) Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Matthew

Pavlich and Nat Fyfe. Fremantle have been struggling this year and are currently sitting 16th. This week

however they might be boosted by the return of their big man Aaron Sandilands. West Coast have been

struggling of late and will be looking to keep their top 4 hopes alive with a win against their arch rivals.

The Western Australian Derby has been going since 1995 with West Coast winning 23 of them and Fre-

mantle winning 20 of them. West Coast won the first 9 of these meetings. Fremantle have won the last

20 out of 34 so when the struggling Dockers came into the completion they were the easy beats of the

competition but Freo have pulled it back they last few years. In these games the two teams show no mer-

cy to each other like last time when West Coast Chris Mastern with suspended for two weeks and also

Alex Silvagni got suspended for 4 weeks for striking.

The Day My Ball Popped In Class!

Well, I suppose even your favourite netball is not meant to last forever. I had my last chance of playing

with my favourite netball a lunchtime yesterday, as by the end of lunch it had its bladder bursting out of

one of the split seams. On returning to class, I placed it in my bag locker and didn’t give it another

thought, although my friends were wanting me to burst it.

Within a few minutes of being in class, the whole of the Year 4 area became silent after hearing an enor-

mous BANG! Had a pin been dropped, it would have been heard due to the complete silence that swept

across our classrooms and shared learning area.

Mrs Tulloch thought that one of the computers was going to blow up. Miss Pilatti and Miss Dobson

thought it was an electrical fault. But, the mystery was soon solved when we realised that the ball out in

my locker had finally POPPED with one mighty BIG BANG! Once we worked out the cause, we were

RELIEVED!
