We are entering June, just a month shy of one year from when Julie and I arrived. I must say I have felt blessed and inspired as this first year has progressed. For that I want to say a great big thank you to each and every person I have encountered here in Fairfax. It is exciting to see the sparks and embers find new fuel to rekindle the fires of our commitment to Jesus Christ. It is likely that as you read this I am again back in Ohio taking a required class at seminary. Each class helps me grow in my walk with God and provides new insights into what God would have us, as a local church, accomplish for His kingdom. There will be times when it will be difficult to accept the challenges before us. One thing we do know is that we have the same assurance that the Apostle Paul understood when he wrote, “So then let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let’s throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith’s pioneer and perfecter. He endured the cross, ignoring the shame, for the sake of the joy that was laid out in front of him, and sat down at the right side of God’s throne.” (Heb. 12:1-2 CEB) The race that is set before us is one that requires training in order to build up our endurance and stamina. In the Christian life this is called “discipleship”. For us to grow our discipleship must be authentic. Survey after survey has found that today’s youth and “non” or nominally churched view most Christians as being hypocritical and not authentic. As a congregation I know many of you try to live out the faith you were baptized into and for that I am grateful. For others, the pull of the world and all of its concerns has been too powerful and has drawn people back through fear, doubt, and failure to truly heed God’s word. I am not judging or condemning those who have felt this way as I truly believe all of us fall into this trap at points in our life. The challenge then for June (and for each day of your life) is to break free of the hold the world has placed on all of us. I pray that you will join me this summer as we explore the meaning and cost of authentic discipleship through a new sermon series beginning on June 17. As always, may the peace and comfort of our Lord and Savior be with you always. Pastor Roger - Rev. Roger Cary Pastor’s Corner

JUNE 2012

Friends, It seems as though this past year has quickly gone by.

12:1-2 CEB)

The race that is set before us is one that requires training in order to build up our endurance and stamina.

Helping Hands of Friendship

Have a project that you cannot, or should not, do yourself?

The Fairfax United Methodist Church would like to extend a hand of friendship by helping members of the Fairfax Community who might need some help with a small project!

Please call the Methodist church office (686-3314) and give a brief description of the job/jobs you need completed, your name and address, and phone number and someone will call you back to discuss details and let you know if it’s a project that our team can successfully handle.

Volunteers needed: We will be going to Second Harvest in St. Joseph on Thursday June 14th. Second Harvest has quite a lot of work to be done such as sort food and fill boxes. Youth and adults are needed. Rides will leave from the church at 11:30 am and return to Fairfax at 5:00 p.m. Call Bob Sefrit at 686-3417 if you can help.

The Ascension They will be here on Sunday, June 10th, 10:30 am worship time to give a concert!! Based in Lebanon, Missouri, this southern gospel group travels thousands of miles each year bringing a message of love and joy through song to congregations large and small. With the intentions of ministry over money, this non-profit group is made of members who have been “raised” in church and understands evangelism and that winning people to Christ is the main reason they sing and tell about the love of Jesus. The qualities of each man come together as a team that has the work of the Lord at heart. We will be taking up a love offering for them that day and we will have a Carry-In Dinner following worship. Please join us and invite your friends and neighbors!!

Once again, Fairfax United Methodist Church will be showing the

Beth Moore Live Simulcast! This year’s event will be: Saturday, September 15th, 8:30 am—3:15 pm

Mark your calendars now!! More info to come!

IF ANYONE WANTS TO HELP AND BE ON THE PLANNING COMMITTEE, PLEASE CALL CHARLA GRAVES 660-686-2834.

Peace with Justice Sunday Peace with Justice Sunday will be observed on Sunday, June 3rd. A special offering will be taken.

How is your congregation called to bring peace and justice to a fragmented, wounded world? When you invite the people in your congregation to share in the church-wide Peace with Justice Sunday offering, they will know they are providing The United Methodist Church with a voice in advocating for peace — around the world and around the neighborhood. Half of the offering is reserved for peace with justice ministry within our conference; the other half supports advocacy and other work for peace and justice in locations around the world.

The Foods Resource Bank (FRB) fiscal year came to an end on March 31st. More than $4.1 million dollars was raised, $3.2 million of this came from US growing projects! More than 200 growing projects support 57 programs in 32 countries. We celebrate the transformations that are taking place in so many lives around the world. The FRB 2012 Annual Meeting will be held July 27-29 at Kidron, Ohio. Copies of the FRB mission travel schedule are at the front door for those interested in attending one of these life changing events.

JUNE 2012

FAIRFAX MESSENGER Have you ever wondered... how many people it takes to put on a Sunday morning worship service? You need one musician, two to three ushers, one com-puter-operator/videographer, a liturgist, an acolyte, and, of course, a minister (or a lay speaker). It takes several people behind the scenes before and after a service, also. For in-stance, someone has to put the altar flowers out before the service and put them back in the refrigerator after the service; someone refills the altar candles and Christ candle; someone refills the children’s activity bags; the ushers are supposed to pick up the pew pads, tear out the page for the day, then put them in the secretary’s office: and at least two people count the offering for the day. That equals 11 to 12 people, by my count. And on Communion Sunday, at least one person prepares the table and two serve during the service.

Look at how many opportunities there are to serve God and your fellow parishioners on a Sunday morning! Although most duties are filled for the year (thank you to those who have al-ready volunteered), we still have a few openings. If you are in-terested in helping, please contact Darla at the church office or myself at 660-744-3185. -Submitted by Suzanne Southard
