It is believed that in the 1870’s the Star Hotel and Livery were constructed. One of the original landowners was
Benjamin Vanderbilt. The “Star” housed a saloon downstairs and a hotel upstairs. It accommodated travelers on
horseback who stayed for $1.00 a day. The upstairs still shows evidence of the use with numbers above the doors.
Rumor has it that an occasional stay at the Star Livery & Hotel by Jesse James. The Chicago and Northwestern
train, which rumbles through Fairfax brought business to the Hotel throughout the years. Operated as a Bar and
Restaurant since the early 1930’s it is known to be the longest running “BUD” bar west of the Mississippi. The
“Star” had several name changes throughout the years – among them “Boland’s Tavern” and “Charlie’s”.
